Red Bull chief vows to confront Schumacher over 'nonsense' Verstappen comment
Ralf Schumacher produced a theory for Max Verstappen's moment of madness at the Spanish Grand Prix appears to have angered Helmut Marko, who slammed the German's 'nonsense'
Helmut Marko has dismissed a 'nonsense' theory about Max Verstappen after the Dutchman's moment of madness during the Spanish Grand Prix. Angry about two collisions he felt other drivers had caused with him late in the Barcelona race, he appeared to deliberately bang wheels with George Russell.
Fortunately, it didn't cause a crash or any significant damage, but Verstappen was handed a penalty which dropped him from fifth place to 10th. And it sparked widespread condemnation of his actions, which also led to three more penalty points on his licence which puts him just one away from a race ban.
The general consensus has been that Verstappen suffered a fit of road rage which led to his petulant act. But, analysing the situation for Sky Germany, former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher offered a different theory.
He mentioned a paddock rumour which claims Verstappen might be able to retire at the end of this season if he does not finish in the top three in the championship. Schumacher's theory was that he might throw away points on purpose to give himself that option.
But it is not a theory to which Red Bull adviser Marko will be subscribing to. "I don't know where he said that nonsense," was his retort when Schumacher's comments were presented to him by Austrian outlet OE24.
Marko admitted that Verstappen "could have handled the situation much more elegantly", but insisted that any rumoured release clauses in the Dutchman's Red Bull contract are "not relevant at the moment" and dismissed the details of them as little more than speculation.
He also made it clear that he plans to have words with Schumacher, obviously unimpressed by the rumours that the six-time F1 race winner has been spreading. Asked if he plans to confront the German, Marko replied: "The next time I meet him, I'll tell him straight away."
Verstappen's penalty saw him take just one point away from the Barcelona race. To make matter worse, his main title rivals scored maximum points with championship leader Oscar Piastri securing his fifth victory of the season and Lando Norris finishing second behind his McLaren team-mate.
Verstappen is now 49 points off the lead, but with plenty of time to address that situation with 15 rounds remaining in the 2025 season. However, he offered only a glum outlook on his title chances after the race when he said: "We are way too slow anyway to fight for the title, that was clear again today."
Marko knows he will have to play something of a cheerleader role to lift Verstappen's spirits after a damaging weekend. He said: "I'm trying to cheer him up: We're not giving up, but something has to finally change with the car."

Liverpool 'get green light' to complete huge £126m Florian Wirtz deal
Liverpool have already been busy in the summer transfer market with the signing of Jeremie Frimpong and are now closing in on a move for his Bayer Leverkusen teammate Florian Wirtz Liverpool have moved a step closer to sealing a sensational deal for Florian Wirtz, with Bayer Leverkusen having now granted their permission for the attacking midfielder to complete a dream move to Anfield. The reigning Premier League champions have been credited with an interest in the German since the end of the season. It was thought that they were set to face competition from Manchester City and Bayern Munich, but they both dropped out of the race for Wirtz's signature. Liverpool have since been locked in negotiations with Leverkusen in an attempt to secure an agreement - and it now appears that they have managed just that. According to reports in Belgium, the Bundesliga side have given Wirtz the 'green light' to complete his move to Anfield. The clubs have agreed a fee of €150m (£126m) for Wirtz's services with personal terms already agreed. Former Leverkusen sporting director Rudi Voller had recently given an update on talks and suggesting he felt positive that a move would eventually be completed. 'It's no secret that he'd like to go to Liverpool,' Voller told DAZN (via Sport1). 'I know the clubs are negotiating with each other. [But with] transfers like this [it's] often the case that it takes a while until an agreement is finally reached. Of course, in the end, you have the feeling it will go through. 'Florian Wirtz has proven that he is a very, very valuable player. Not only for Bayer Leverkusen but also for the national team. That's why he costs a few euros more.' Meanwhile, Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard also shared his feelings on the Reds' potential deal for Wirtz and appeared to be a big fan. He said: 'There are rumours obviously, Florian Wirtz. 'A big talent who's done fantastic for Xabi Alonso at Leverkusen. He's got a huge future in front of him, so if Liverpool is the place for him, let's hope we can make it happen.' Should a deal be completed, Wirtz would be the second star to swap Bayer Leverkusen for Liverpool. Arne Slot 's side also completed a move for fullback Jeremie Frimpong, who was signed for around £35m. Liverpool's business does not appear likely to end there either. The Reds are also closing in on a deal for Armin Pecsi from Puskas Akademia for £1.5m. They are also hopeful of signing his Hungarian counterpart Milos Kerkes from Bournemouth. The Cherries have put a £45m asking price on the left-back ahead of next season. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Talking points as England continue World Cup qualifying campaign against Andorra
Here, the PA news agency takes a look at the talking points ahead of the game. Victories over Albania and Latvia in Thomas Tuchel's first two games in charge in March set England on the right path to North America next summer and they currently top Group K after two games, though their biggest rivals Serbia are yet to kick-off their campaign. However, a victory over the minnows in Barcelona will put Tuchel's men one step closer to the World Cup ahead of September's toughest game of the group in Serbia. The German is not taking the game lightly, naming his strongest possible squad, including players who are going to the Club World Cup later this month. A post shared by Trevoh Chalobah (@yungchalobah) Trevoh Chalobah earned his maiden call-up to the senior squad after an impressive season for Chelsea and he has his sights on history. If he is able to get on the pitch against Andorra – or Senegal in next Tuesday's friendly – he will follow in his brother Nathaniel's shoes by representing England, making the Chalobahs the 21st set of brothers to play for England. Only two of them have been post-war, Bobby and Jack Charlton and Phil and Gary Neville, while Trevoh will be hoping his international career lasts longer than the six minutes 54 seconds Nathaniel managed in his one and only appearance in 2018. Down to work! 😤 — England (@England) June 2, 2025 England are already preparing for the extreme temperatures they are expected to face in next summer's World Cup and they have spent the week training in the 27-degree heat of Spain rather than at St George's Park. The players have been doing acclimitisation testing this week, consisting of cycling in sauna-like temperatures, and taking scientific tests on their core body temperature and reaction to heat. They will get some in-game experience of it against Andorra as well, with temperatures expected to be in the mid-20s when the match kicks off on Saturday tea-time. 💚💚💚💚💚 — Ivan Toney (@ivantoney24) May 4, 2025 Most people thought Ivan Toney had sacrificed his England career when he made a money-spinning move to Saudia Arabia last summer, but Thomas Tuchel has brought him back into the squad. The striker scored 23 goals in 30 Saudi Pro League appearances for Al-Ahli, helping the side to win the AFC Champions League Elite competition. With Ollie Watkins also back in the squad after injury, captain Harry Kane has some competition in attack. This match is not a question of whether England will win, but how many goals will they score. Andorra are well down the FIFA rankings, in 173rd and below Papa New Guinea and St Vincent and the Grenadines, and have only ever won four World Cup qualifiers – two of them against San Marino. England have a healthy record against them, winning all of their six previous meetings to an aggregate of 25-0 and should strengthen that.
