India Today19-07-2025
India's top food safety and nutrition movement, Eat Right India, is making progress in improving the country's food environment.Launched in 2018 by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the initiative promotes safe, healthy, and sustainable food for all. Now in its seventh year, the campaign has trained over 12 lakh food handlers and repurposed 55 lakh litres of used cooking oil, of which 39 lakh litres have been converted into biodiesel.advertisementPrime Minister Narendra Modi earlier praised the movement during his Mann Ki Baat address on June 29, calling on citizens to reduce oil in their diets and embrace healthy eating habits.
"Reduce oil in food by 10%, reduce excess weight. When you are fit, you will be superhit in your life," he said, underlining the need for public participation in tackling obesity and other lifestyle diseases.INDIA'S CHANGING FOOD LANDSCAPEModern lifestyles and urbanisation have led to rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease in India. At the same time, concerns around food safety, from chemical residues to unhygienic cooking practices, have become more pressing.Eat Right India was designed as a response to these challenges, aiming to make both food safety and nutrition a public health priority. The movement works across three pillars: improving food safety standards, educating consumers, and promoting environmentally sustainable practices.CERTIFIED STATIONS AND CLEAN FOOD HUBSAs of July 6, 2025, India has 284 certified Eat Right Stations at railway hubs and 249 Clean Street Food Hubs where vendors have been trained to maintain hygiene and serve safe food.Initiatives like FoSTaC (Food Safety Training and Certification) are ensuring that street vendors, restaurant workers, and other food handlers are equipped with proper knowledge of food safety standards.Campaigns like 'Aaj Se Thoda Kam' encourage the public to cut down on salt, sugar, and oil. Meanwhile, Trans Fat-Free India is working to eliminate harmful industrial fats from processed foods.EAT RIGHT CAMPUSES IN OFFICES AND SCHOOLSFrom Eat Right Campuses in offices and hospitals to Eat Right Schools that include nutrition in the curriculum, the campaign is bringing healthier food practices to everyday spaces.Even places of worship and fruit and vegetable markets are being certified under the programme.FSSAI is also pushing sustainability, urging businesses to cut down on single-use plastics and manage food waste responsibly. One of the major successes has been the RUCO (Repurpose Used Cooking Oil) initiative, where used oil from restaurants is collected and turned into biodiesel.GLOBAL RECOGNITIONThe campaign has earned international praise, winning the Rockefeller Foundation's Food Systems Vision Prize in 2021 and being recognised by the World Health Organisation as a global best practice for reducing trans fats.advertisementWith strong support from government bodies, private businesses, NGOs, and citizen groups, Eat Right India could make nutritious, safe, and eco-friendly food a reality for every Indian.- Ends

4,106 panchayats TB-free, CG wins nat'l award for campaign success

Raipur: Chhattisgarh is making rapid strides towards tuberculosis (TB) elimination with declaration of 4,106 gram panchayats TB-free. Chhattisgarh also received a national award for excellent implementation of the TB-Free Gram Panchayat programme. The state is implementing a comprehensive action plan to achieve PM Narendra Modi's goal of making India TB-free by 2025. The "Nikshay-Niramay Chhattisgarh – 100-day campaign" began on Dec 7, 2024. The campaign aimed to combat TB at the grassroots level. Under the initiative, authorities identified and listed high-risk individuals through door-to-door surveys across all districts. They conducted tests using modern techniques. Public participation played a significant role in the campaign's success. The Governor, CM, and Health minister adopted TB patients and provided nutritional support as 'Nikshay Mitras'. Over 15,000 new Nikshay Mitras have registered and provided nutritional assistance to more than 34,000 patients. Chief minister Vishnu Deo Sai directed authorities to focus on vulnerable sections of society often deprived of healthcare services. These include prisoners, elderly residents in old age homes, students in hostels, and factory workers. Sai stated that when govt commitment and public cooperation unite, change transforms from a goal into an achievement. Chhattisgarh is becoming a living example of this.

Food Safety Department mandates consumer feedback apps for sweet shops in Prayagraj to enhance transparency

PRAYAGRAJ: Officials of the Food Safety Department have made consumer satisfaction feedback apps compulsory for sweet shop owners, aiming to enhance transparency and accountability in the food industry, benefiting consumers in Sangam city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Around 100 prominent sweet shop owners in the city have been asked to promote the app among consumers as the move is part of a broader effort by food safety authorities to leverage technology for better regulation and grievance redressal. With its implementation, the department intends to ensure food businesses prioritise consumer feedback and address any issues related to food safety and hygiene promptly. A senior official of the Food Safety Department told TOI that the department has asked traders associated with the Prayagraj Sweets & Namkeen Welfare Association to promote the consumer satisfaction feedback app ahead of the festival. He added that traders associated with the organisation are briefed about the customer satisfaction feedback that has been made mandatory to be displayed at the shop. Besides, displaying the standards of the Oil Board (which food contains how much oil) and the Sugar Board (which food contains how much sugar) has also been made mandatory at the shops. Shopkeepers were also motivated to keep the amount of food colour at a low level in sweets and namkeen bakery products. Moreover, the department has also initiated an awareness campaign against obesity. Ankit Gupta, owner of a prominent sweet shop, told TOI that they are promoting consumer satisfaction feedback on the Food Safety Connect app among consumers and have installed banners and posters at their installations. He added that the majority of traders associated with the Prayagraj Sweet & Namkeen Welfare Association are installing details of the app at their respective shops. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Gupta, meanwhile, said they are also taking part in creating awareness against obesity, claiming that obesity has undoubtedly become a major public health challenge, affecting people across all age groups and increasing the risk of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as diabetes, heart disease, and hypertension. Driven by unhealthy diets, sedentary lifestyles, and environmental factors, obesity is rising at an alarming rate among citizens of all age groups, impacting both urban and rural populations. The shift towards processed foods, reduced physical activity, and lifestyle changes has further contributed to the crisis. Pointedly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, through his Mann Ki Baat programme, also emphasised the need to create awareness and collective action to reduce obesity, particularly through lower edible oil consumption. This call for collective action highlights the importance of tackling obesity at both individual and community levels, reinforcing the need for a fitter and healthier India. The union govt is promoting healthier lifestyles, better nutrition, and physical activity through various schemes and programmes aiming to encourage long-term behavioural change, ensuring a healthier future for all.
