UK Eastern Green Link 2 project secures $939m from SEK
The EGL2 project includes the development of a 525kV, 2GW high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea transmission cable from Peterhead to Drax in Yorkshire.
It is being developed by a partnership between National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET) and Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks Transmission (SSENT).
Overall expenditure for EGL2 is projected to be €5bn ($5.8bn). The EGL2 subsea link is expected to be operational by 2029.
The project will support the decarbonisation of the UK's electricity grid, aligning with the government's net zero strategy.
SEK is funding Swedish and European exports for National Grid's portion of the project, including supplies from Hitachi Energy.
The financing is designated as a Green Loan under international standards, signifying its contribution to climate improvement and alignment with global sustainability objectives.
The financial arrangement includes a partnership with Société Générale (SocGen) and BNP Paribas, with funding from SEK supported by a Green Export Credit Guarantee from EKN.
SEK global trade and export finance director Marica Bixo stated: 'This is a strategically important investment that strengthens the UK's renewable energy infrastructure. We are proud to contribute by financing Swedish technology with global impact.
'Green and sustainable financing is a priority area for us, and this project clearly supports the transition to a low-carbon economy.'
SSENT and NGET commenced construction work on the EGL2 project in September 2024.

Coffee shop's evening alcohol plans approved
A coffee shop's plan to offer early evening alcoholic drinks at its city centre site has been approved. The Nest Coffee House in London Road sought permission for a premises licence from Southampton City Council. The application went before a licensing sub-committee after three representations were made by residents, who live near the site. Designated premises supervisor and director Nathan Alexander said the proposal was to offer an alternative after the working day following a request from customers. Councillors were told the coffee shop was planning to offer 'very low-level alcohol availability'. 'We are not looking at doing cocktails or any pumps,' Mr Alexander said. 'It was purely to have several cold bottle offerings to offer something a little bit different to a cup off coffee at 6pm in the evening on a Friday night. 'We would possibly run alongside low-level events like cheese and wine evenings, low-level acoustic music with no amplification, just local bands.' He told the licensing committee on Wednesday, July 30, Nest was not looking to be a bar or add to the night-time economy in the area. The premises licence included the supply of alcohol from 12pm until 10.30pm Monday to Saturday and until 9pm on Sunday. The venue will also be able to host live music from 6pm to 10pm on Monday to Friday, 5pm to 10pm on Saturday, and 5.30pm to 8.30pm on Sunday. However, Mr Alexander said the coffee shop's goal was to stay open until around 9pm or 9.30pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. He said initially the premises might start with just Friday and Saturdays to 'see how it goes'. Summarising the proposal, Mr Alexander said: 'It was really just to compliment what we already do. 'We have got quite a nice vibe in the place and it is something customers have asked for. 'We have had a look at it and from a business point of view it works for us but we are primarily a coffee shop and a place of work for students and offices and meetings.' The meeting heard Mr Alexander had past experience running bars in Southampton and London. Sub-committee chair Cllr Gordon Cooper said the resident objections largely raised questions about wider tenure of the London Road area. Mr Alexander said he 'totally' understood the concerns, adding that he is an active part of a business collective which is trying to address some of these issues.

Civil service internships to be restricted to working class
The government will tighten eligibility criteria for Whitehall internships as part of a broader push to make the civil service more representative of the working class. According to the BBC, the main internship scheme will now be limited to students from 'lower socio-economic backgrounds'. Pat McFadden, the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and the minister responsible for civil service reform, said that Whitehall needed to reflect the broader community. 'We need to get more working-class young people into the Civil Service so it harnesses the broadest range of talent and truly reflects the country,' he told the BBC. 'Government makes better decisions when it represents and understands the people we serve.' The changes are expected to take effect from summer 2026 and will give young people experience writing briefings, planning events, conducting policy research and shadowing civil servants, according to the broadcaster. The existing work summer placement programme, which lasts up to eight weeks and is paid, is open to undergraduates in the final two years of their degree. The Duchy of Lancaster has been contacted for comment. The move comes after the Government announced plans to move thousands more civil servants out of London as part of plans to 'radically reform the state'. In May, the Government confirmed it would cut the number of civil servants working in London by 12,000 and shift jobs to a series of new regional 'campuses' across the country. Mr McFadden said at the time that the Government would be relocating a 'substantial number of roles'. 'The aim is to reduce the London count by about 12,000. That will save us £94 million in lease costs because the properties in London are very expensive. 'And we will move thousands – it's difficult to put a precise number – thousands of those jobs to new themed campuses around the country,' he told Times Radio. The changes will also see 11 Government office buildings in London close, including one of its largest Westminster sites, in a move expected to save £94 million a year by 2032. The move will see two new major 'campuses' created, one in Manchester focused on digital innovation and AI and another in Aberdeen on energy. Manchester is already home to major offices of the science and culture departments, while Aberdeen houses the new Great British Energy headquarters. Other roles will be created in Birmingham, Leeds, Cardiff, Glasgow, Darlington, Newcastle and Tyneside, Sheffield, Bristol, Edinburgh, Belfast and York, with the changes expected to bring £729 million to the local economy by 2030.
