Probe under way to track drug pushers accused of sexually exploiting minors

The Hindua day ago

A special squad of the Kozhikode Rural police has launched a comprehensive investigation to track down a gang of drug pushers who reportedly lured minor boys and girls into their discreet network and sought sexual favours from them. The incident came to light recently following the arrest of a couple from Kuttiyady last week under various sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
Police sources said that the detailed statement of one of the survivors had already been recorded after the couple's arrest. They said efforts were under way to identify other suspected survivors and record their statements as part of the ongoing probe.
A senior police officer associated with the investigation said some social and political activists had already raised concerns about the possible involvement of influential persons in the case. 'We are focusing on concrete evidence to make headway in the probe. The identity of the children will also have to be protected,' he said.
The police have also collected a few social media posts from various accounts that reportedly carried revelations about the alleged abuse. Drug-induced sexual assault is one of the serious allegations raised by a few local informants from Kuttiyady, which prompted the police to delve deeper into the complaints.
According to police sources, there is reason to suspect that the gang used videos of the alleged sexual abuse to further blackmail the trapped minors and expand their supply network. They said confidential complaints also indicated that some of the youngsters were allegedly forced to accompany strangers and stay in secretly arranged locations.

NIA files chargesheet against three accused in Punjab grenade attack case linked to Khalistan Zindabad Force

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Saturday (June 15, 2025) chargesheeted three persons in connection with the 2024 case related to a grenade attack at a police post in SBS Nagar district of Punjab. The attack was allegedly planned by banned terror outfit, Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF). Among those arraigned are Yugpreet Singh aka Yuvi Nihung; Jaskaran Singh aka Shah; and Harjot Singh aka Jot Hundal, all residents of Rahon village in SBS Nagar. The NIA has invoked various provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosive Substances Act. The agency has also launched investigations against KZF chief and designated 'individual terrorist' Ranjit Singh aka Neeta, the outfit's member operative Jagjit Singh Lahiri aka Jagga (currently in the United Kingdom), and other unidentified terror operatives. The NIA, which took over the case from the Punjab Police in March, has found that Jagga had recruited Yugpreet Singh through an acquaintance in the U.K. 'Along with the other KZF terrorists and operatives, Jagga had radicalised Yugpreet and handled him via encrypted messaging applications. Jagga had also provided Yugpreet with over ₹4.36 lakh of terror funds through a complex chain of Canada-based entities, who have also been identified and examined,' it said. In turn, Yugpreet allegedly recruited the other two chargesheeted accused and the three had carried out the attack at the police post in the intervening night of December 1 and 2, 2024. The grenade had been arranged by the foreign-based handlers in November 2024, it is alleged. The NIA investigation into the terror attacks at the law enforcement establishments and sensitive installations, as well as targeted killings in Punjab, are going on.

Tamil Nadu government notifies law to prevent coercive recovery of micro-loans

The State government has notified the Tamil Nadu Money Lending Entities (Prevention of Coercive Actions) Act, 2025, which is meant to prevent coercive recovery of micro-loans by money-lending entities. The Assembly passed the legislation in April, and it received the Governor's assent on June 9. The Act is aimed at protecting the weaker and vulnerable groups and individuals — especially farmers, women, and self-help groups — from the coercive recovery of loans by money-lending entities such as micro-finance institutions and money-lending agencies operating in Tamil Nadu. It shall apply to all money-lending entities, including digital lending platforms, but not to banks, non-banking financial companies registered with the Reserve Bank of India, and co-operative banks and societies. However, the provisions of the Act relating to coercive action against the borrower shall apply to non-banking financial companies registered with the RBI and co-operative banks and societies. Micro-loan means a loan given to a household having an annual household income of upto ₹3 lakh. A household means an individual family unit: husband, wife, and their unmarried son and daughter. Borrower means an individual or group of individuals or a self-help group or joint liability group, according to the Act. Section 20 of the Act also lists what constitutes coercive action. This includes obstructing or using violence against or insulting or intimidating the borrower or any of his family members. Using the service of private or outsourced or external agencies to negotiate or urging the borrower to make payment using coercive and undue influence or seeking to take forcibly any document of the borrower which entitles him to benefits of government programmes, any other vital documents, articles or household belongings also amounts to coercive action. The Act stipulates imprisonment and penalties, depending on the violation of the coercive clause. The government will appoint a Registering Authority. The Act states that the Registering Authority can take complaints suo motu or receive and forward the same to the jurisdictional police. Rules laying down the procedure for registering complaints are yet to be notified, says advocate R. Thirumoorthy. The Act mandates the police not to refuse complaints, he adds. 'The Act has exempted the regulated entities from its purview. However, the clause on penalty for coercive practice is made applicable to all, except banks. We only hope that this clause will not be misused by borrowers or law-enforcement agencies... We are also against any coercive practices in recovery and we have given adequate instructions to that effect,' says Jiji Mammen, executive director and CEO of Sa-Dhan, a self-regulatory organisation for the micro-finance industry.

Uttarakhand HC quashes summons to Patanjali, Ramdev in complaint over allegedly misleading ads

The Uttarakhand High Court has quashed a trial court's summons to Patanjali Ayurved and its co-founders, yoga guru Ramdev and Balkrishna, in a complaint accusing them of publishing misleading advertisements to promote various products. In an order dated June 3, Justice Vivek Bharti Sharma allowed a petition filed by Patanjali Ayurved, Ramdev and Balkrishna under Section 582 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita to quash summons issued to them by the Haridwar chief judicial magistrate. Section 582 deals with the powers of the High Court to prevent abuse of the process of any court. The 'misleading advertisements' case stems from a complaint filed last year by Uttarakhand's food security officer. In the complaint, the officer cited letters from the Ministry of Ayush issued in 2022, Live Law reported. These letters noted that several Patanjali medicines, including Madhugrit, Madhunashini and Divya Livogrit Tablet, were promoted through allegedly misleading advertisements. The complaint alleged offenses under Sections 3, 4 and 7 of the Drugs and Magic Remedies Objectionable Advertisements Act. Section 3 of the Act prohibits the advertisement of certain drugs for the treatment of specific diseases and disorders, while Section 4 bans misleading advertisements related to drugs. Section 7 outlines the penalties for these offenses. Justice Sharma in his order said that there was 'no evidence of falsity of claim, no allegation of falsity of claim nor there is any description of manner how that is misleading'. 'Merely writing letter to the petitioner firm that the advertisement should be removed without stating specifically that the claim made in the advertisements were false, does not give reasons to prosecute the petitioner firm,' the court said. The order also stated that there was no occasion for the trial court to take the cognisance and issue summons to the petitioners as there was no allegation about how the advertisement was false and misleading. In April 2024, the Supreme Court had criticised the state government for not taking action against Patanjali Ayurved and its subsidiary Divya Pharmacy under the Drugs and Magic Remedies Objectionable Advertisements Act for the publication of allegedly misleading advertisements. The state government had filed the complaint against Patanjali Ayurved, Ramdev and Balkrishna following the Supreme Court's observations. The High Court, in its order on June 3, observed that the state government cannot rely on the Supreme Court's remarks in the case against Patanjali Ayurved. The complaint had to be assessed solely on the basis of the allegations raised in it and the materials supporting it, the court added.
