Zoë Kravitz's Latest Look Makes the Case for Summer Athleisure

Elle18-07-2025
While much of womenswear has been busy romanticizing the office, male celebrities—think Harry Styles, Paul Mescal, and Pedro Pascal—have long dominated the tiny gym short space. Their signature look is easy to conjure: 3-inch inseams, vintage T-shirts, beat-up low-top sneakers, and, if they're really committing, wired headphones. But leave it to Zoë Kravitz—queen of low-key serves—to reclaim the summer style throne with one skillful sartorial move.
The Blink Twice director was spotted leaving New York's Bowery Hotel yesterday afternoon—a go-to haunt for the likes of Charli xcx and Addison Rae—wearing ultra-micro high-waisted black track shorts paired with a Black History Month tee sourced from Procell Vintage (another downtown IYKYK staple). She finished the outfit with peep-toe heeled mules and an unreleased Baby Icare Hobo bag designed by Anthony Vaccarello for Saint Laurent.
The ensemble was styled by fashion powerhouse Danielle Goldberg, marking her first collaboration with Kravitz. Goldberg has an exceptional knack for tapping into the innate style DNA of each client, taking small fashion seeds and sowing them into full-blown iconic moments. Her roster speaks for itself: Ayo Edebiri, Solange Knowles, Emily Ratajkowski, and Saoirse Ronan—all regular fixtures on any credible best-dressed list.
The result? Peak '80s energy—call to mind those ridiculous gym shorts in Sixteen Candles, but with a 2025 downtown party twist. In the middle of a swampy 90-degree afternoon, Kravitz's effortlessly unexpected styling strikes that perfect It-girl sweet spot. Her micro shorts also beg the question: why did we ever abandon retro athleisure in the first place? They feel like the logical next step from last summer's boxers-and-loafers trend. Maybe it's time officecore stays where it belongs—at the office. After hours, we should follow Kravitz's lead and slip into something far more comfortable. Because in the end, it's the styling that transforms an outfit into a statement.

TV Drama Shows North Koreans State's Failings for First Time

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A new North Korean television drama has drawn attention for its unusually candid depiction of corruption and deep-rooted social problems inside the secretive communist state. Why It Matters The show's April release marked a rare moment in North Korean media, where television dramas have previously shown the country as an idealized utopia in line with the propaganda of supreme leader Kim Jong Un's regime. The government, led by the Korean Workers' Party, tightly censors media in the country, and watching foreign TV shows can result in lengthy prison camp sentences or even public execution, according to defectors who have fled to South Korea. Newsweek has contacted the North Korean Embassy in China for comment by email. What To Know The 22-episode series, titled "A New Spring in the Paekhak Plain," centers on the struggles of a party secretary who relocates to Paekhak, a remote farming village in North Korea's western Sinchon County. In his efforts to help the struggling community boost its crop yields, the official is confronted with local hardships and widespread corruption not present in past North Korean dramas. Hardship and corruption are major themes throughout the series. The story depicts food insecurity, bribery and officials embezzling grain—showing ordinary people offering bribes for favors and bureaucrats abusing their power. Kyodo via Associated Press Unlike earlier productions, which tied emotional displays to ideological loyalty, the show features romantic subplots with flirtation and heartbreak. Family conflict also appears, as the main character's move creates tension with his wife. The drama even addresses class divides, with one mother paying her son's girlfriend—who hails from a lower social stratum—to end their relationship. Despite these changes, propaganda remains present. Scenes of smartphone use, new homes and abundant food are common, contrasting with the harsh reality faced by most North Koreans. Jeon Young-sun, a North Korean culture researcher at Konkuk University in Seoul, told The Wall Street Journal that the show was "provocative" media reflecting Kim's push for more engaging state content and promises to improve living standards. The series follows severe flooding and landslides along the Yalu River last year that left more than 1,000 people dead or missing and thousands more displaced. What People Are Saying Isaac Stone Fish, the founder and CEO of the research firm Strategy Risks, wrote on X: "For the first time, North Korean viewers can see a North Korean television show featuring some of the awful problems with North Korea. A massive change." Chris Monday, an associate professor at South Korea's Dongseo University, told The Wall Street Journal: "We have never seen Party failings and personal failings depicted so starkly." What Happens Next Analysts have said the show signals a shift in the regime's media strategy. Jeon told The Wall Street Journal that it may reflect Kim's drive to keep citizens watching state television while promising better living conditions.

Julia Garner Recalls How She Convinced Madonna to Cast Her in Upcoming Bio Project: ‘I Owned It'

The "Ozark" star says the delayed Universal biopic is "supposed to still happen" after being shelved in 2023 Julia Garner is still ready to step into Madonna's 'Material Girl' shoes. The three-time Emmy Award winner confirmed on Monday's episode of the 'Smartless' podcast to hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman and Sean Hayes that the shelved Universal biopic is still in the works. More from TheWrap Lindsay Lohan's Toddler Son Thought She Was Trapped in the TV During 'GMA' Appearance: 'Mommy, Come Out!' | Video Greg Gutfeld Says Network Late Night Is 'Safe' and 'Suffocating': 'Beholden to Publicists and Celebrities' | Video Amazon Sets Medical Drama 'God Complex' for Development From Sonay Hoffman and Tommy Benjamin NBC Sets Fall Premieres for NBA, 'The Voice,' 'Brilliant Minds' and More 'Is that going to still happen?' Hayes asked, to which the 'Inventing Anna' actress responded, 'Yeah, I mean, that's supposed to still happen.' Garner admitted to the podcast trio that in order to hype herself up for the audition she thought to herself, 'What would Madonna do?' '[She would] convince you that she deserves, you know, to be in this room, and I owned it,' she said of her audition. 'I was kind of like, 'You can take it or leave it, but if you leave it, if I leave, then that's on you.'' 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' actress said she was aware of the project and went into the audition just to prove to herself that she could do it. 'I wasn't a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically,' she recalled. 'And sing. And sing with her!' After the feature film was delayed by Universal in 2023, Netflix and 'Stranger Things' producer and director Shawn Levy teamed up with the music legend about her life and career. The project is still in development, but it would be Levy's latest title with Netflix after 'The Perfect Couple' and 'All the Light We Cannot See.' It is unclear if the series will capture the 'Queen of Pop''s entire career and discography or if it will focus in on a specific time period of her life. Madonna has made several attempts over the years to get a biopic about her life and career off the ground. Madonna intended to direct the Julia Garner-led film version of the story. Erin Cressida Wilson and Diablo Cody worked on the script for Universal before it was shelved by the studio. The upcoming Levy limited series is completely unrelated to the Universal feature. Madonna brought out Garner to perform with her on her 'Celebration' tour in 2023 for a segment themed to her hit 'Vogue.' The pair have remained in touch, with the 'Ozark' star posting with the music legend at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in March with the caption: ' see you @madonna.'
