Sloth bear: Tourists barred from visiting Puliyancholai
Though the nearby reserve forest areas have sloth bears, the department said it was very rare for the protected animal to wander into the streams that have constant human movement.
Namakkal forest department that has jurisdiction over Puliyancholai streams, situated about 80km from Trichy city, said the sloth bear was first spotted by locals around 6.30pm on Saturday. The department staff inspected the spot as locals shared a purported video of the bear near the streams.
Listed under schedule I of Indian Wildlife Protection act, 1972, the bear was seen crossing the streams and reaching areas accessed by tourists.
"The bear was around 2.5 feet tall. We are tracking the animal's movements. It may take a few days for the bear to return to the core reserve forest areas," a forest department official said. Three of them have been deployed in Puliyancholai to stop tourists and locals from moving into the area.
Officials said there is a high chance of the animal attacking people if provoked. "There is substantial water flow in the streams, but tourists will not be allowed until we confirm that the bear has left the zone," the official added. Sloth bears feed on termites in the forest area. Leisure bathing has now been prohibited on a 500-metre stretch of the stream. Forest department said that bears are usually spotted only in reserve forest areas in the uphill zone of Kolli hills, mostly near Oyangudi and Soradipatti villages.

Hubballi Airport leads in solar power generation among AAI airports
1 2 3 Hubballi: The Hubballi Airport, where an 8MW solar power plant was installed in Dec 2022, has emerged as the highest power-generating among Airport Authority of India (AAI) airports in the country. It produces 8MW of electricity per day, meeting its own needs before supplying excess power to other state airports. It's also said that Hubballi Airport is the first AAI-run facility in the country to export solar-generated power to multiple establishments. Rupesh Kumar Sripad, director of Hubballi Airport, told TOI that Hubballi is India's first airport-based solar plant supplying renewable energy to multiple airports. "The plant generated 2.4 crore units of power in the last two years. We saved Rs 12.4 crore that was supposed to be paid as the electricity bill for all AAI establishments in Karnataka. AAI establishments like Ballari Radar Station, Bengaluru Gagan Air-navigation monitoring station, Bengaluru-Devanahalli Airport-AAI staff residential colony, and Mangalore Airport AAI staff residential colony benefit from the Hubballi solar plant, whose project cost was Rs 33.2 crore," he explained. He further said, "Revenue generated from balanced energy after feeding to AAI establishments in Karnataka is Rs 2.1 crore." Sources added that the airport is selling electricity to KPTCL, earning over Rs one crore annually, while saving around Rs 3.6 crore in power bills every year. Earlier, Belagavi and Hubballi airports were shortlisted for the setting up of a solar plant, and Hubballi was preferred based on its weather history. The plant is installed by Madhav Infra Project Limited of Gujarat under the Sustainable Green Airport Mission, in an area of 38 acres, offsetting an estimated 2.1 lakh tonnes of carbon emissions during its lifespan. Thanks to such a green effort, the airport was honoured with the Platinum In The Green Airport Recognition-2025 award, meant for global green airports, in April, by Airports Council International Asia-Pacific and Middle East. Maha cabinet approves Rs 18 crore to make air travel from Solapur to Pune & Mumbai feasible
Kolhapur: The state cabinet approved Rs 18 crore to ensure air travellers from Solapur can travel to Pune and Mumbai at a subsidised rate of Rs 3,240 per seat, covering 100% of the operational cost of the service. The refurbished Solapur airport commenced flight operations with the Solapur-Goa route. However, despite several efforts, airline operators were hesitant to provide regular air services from Solapur to Mumbai and Pune, citing unaffordable ticket prices as the airport is not included in the Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme for regional connectivity. To make air travel between Solapur and Pune and Solapur and Mumbai viable, state govt decided to grant a subsidy per seat to offset operational losses and make air travel affordable for people. "For one year, govt will provide a viability gap funding subsidy of Rs 3,240 per seat with a total budget of Rs 17.9 crore. After one year, the airport will come under the UDAN scheme and, thereafter, the state will grant 20% of the travel fares as per the UDAN scheme guidelines, and the viability gap funding will cease to exist," said the cabinet decision. A Goa-based airline currently operates flights on four days of the week — Monday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday — from the Solapur airport. The flight lands at Mopa airport. A senior airport official said, "The discussions are on with other private air service providers to start services for connecting flights between Solapur, Pune, and Mumbai. The mid-size airplane (60 seater) will be deployed along the routes." Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). FASTag made mandatory for vehicles entering Tirumala from Aug 15
Tirupati: Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has made FASTag, a radio frequency identification technology-based system for e-toll collection in the prepaid digital format, mandatory for all vehicles entering Tirumala through the Alipiri tollgate from Aug 15. The temple trust said the decision was taken to provide better safety standards, prevent overcrowding, and offer transparent services to devotees arriving in own or rented vehicles at the Alipiri check point. A FASTag issuance kiosk has been set up at the Alipiri check point for those who do not have FASTag on their vehicles. TTD's vigilance and security wing clarified that the security frisking mechanisms in place at Alipiri tollgate will remain as they are irrespective of the mode of toll collection. While there are twin pedestrian routes leading to Tirumala, Alipiri happens to be the only gateway to Tirumala as far as vehicular traffic is concerned. TTD collects two-way toll fees from vehicles plying along the twin ghat roads. With close to 8,000 vehicles entering Tirumala through the Alipiri tollgate during normal days and around 12,000-15,000 vehicles heading to the hill shrine during weekends, holidays, and important festive occasions, manual collection of toll fees at Alipiri often leads to traffic jams. Devotees have welcomed the move to facilitate digital payments through FASTag, which will enable faster collection of toll fees without manual intervention and lead to a hassle-free passage following the security frisking at Alipiri tollgate.
