Crown Prince Haakon breaks silence after stepson Marius Borg Høiby was charged with four counts of rape
Haakon, the son of Norway's King Harald, described the situation - which yesterday overshadowed his wife Crown Princess Mette-Marit 's 52nd birthday - as 'challenging and difficult.'
During a royal engagement in Trondheim, Trøndelag, on Tuesday, he told Norwegian broadcaster NRK: 'Everyone involved in this case probably finds it challenging and difficult.'
He added: 'It has now been clarified what the charges will be. It is now up to the court to decide.'
Haakon, who married Høiby's mother Mette-Marit in 2001, also stressed that the royal family will continue to carry out its duties.
Høiby does not hold a royal title and is not included in the royal line of succession.
According to NRK, the charges against Høiby, 28, include four rapes of four different woman between 2018 and 2024, abuse against his former partner Nora Haukland and several acts of violence against another former partner.
On all occasions, Høiby allegedly assaulted the women while they were sleeping and filmed the assaults. The assaults also allegedly occurred after Høiby and the women had consensual intercourse.
He has also been charged with making death threats, assaulting a public official and violating the road traffic act.
Høiby denies the most serious offences but plans to plead guilty to some lesser charges in court when the trial starts, his lawyer Petar Sekulic told Reuters on Monday.
'He does not agree with the claims regarding rape and domestic violence,' Sekulic said of his client.
Broadly speaking, however, the Norweigan royal family appears to have carried on as normal after Høiby's criminal charges were made public on Monday.
Marius's mother Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway marked her 52nd birthday yesterday with a new portrait - while his sister Princess Ingrid Alexandra appeared to enjoy a stroll in the sun in Sydney, where she's at university.
The photograph of future queen Mette-Marit was published on the official Instagram account of the Norwegian royal household on Tuesday morning.
The wife of Crown Prince Haakon, Høiby's stepfather and the son of Norway's King Harald, is smiling in the new image and wearing the colours of her country's flag: red, white and dark blue.
Dressed in a long-sleeved, navy turtleneck, she has a striped silk scarf in crimson, navy and cream draped around her shoulders.
Mette-Marit's long, blonde hair has been blow-dried and is styled in loose waves, which are in-keeping with the relaxed look chosen for the picture.
She completed her ensemble with a pair of dainty gold and diamond hoops earrings and kept her make-up natural.
Captioned 'Happy birthday to Crown Princess Mette-Marit, who celebrates her birthday today!', the Instagram post attracted hundreds of comments from well-wishers in a matter of hours.
Yet, while she appeared content in the new image, it's unlikely she will be celebrating her birthday as she has in previous years given the seriousness of the situation Høiby now finds himself in.
Although the crown princess, who suffers from chronic pulmonary fibrosis, was forced to cancel a royal engagement planned to mark her 50th in April 2023 due to illness, she was able to celebrate the milestone birthday later that year.
Two years ago Mette-Marit and husband Haakon, who was born just under a month before his wife, hosted a joint party at the Royal Palace in Oslo to mark their 50th birthdays.
Held on August 25 2023, the lavish event was attended by guests from all over Norway, as well as government officials and members of the organisations to which the royal couple have given their patronage.
Mette-Marit looked glamorous in a sheer white gown featuring puff sleeves and adorned with appliqué flowers while Haakon, now 52, looked polished in a navy suit and white shirt.
The crown prince and crown princess arrived at the party with the two children they share, Princess Ingrid Alexandra, 21, who is second in line to the throne, and Prince Sverre Magnus, 19, but it's unclear if Høiby was in attendance.
The Norwegian popstar Dagny performed at the party while both Mette-Marit and Haakon gave speeches.
Mette-Marit concluded: 'Thank you for all for coming and celebrating with us. For celebrating Norway. For celebrating what we have created together. For celebrating what we can be for each other, and for our country.'
Today, however, as Mette-Marit marks her 52nd birthday, the mother-of-three will feel the absence of her daughter, Ingrid Alexandra, who is currently enrolled at the University of Sydney in Australia.
Ingrid Alexandra began her studies in international relations and political economy at the beginning of the month, having moved to Sydney, where she lives in a student residence on the university campus, earlier this summer.
Recent pictures show the princess looking happy and relaxed - and, like Aussie students across the country, enjoying a beloved local snack.
The royal was snapped walking around campus on Sunday with two packets of Tim Tams, which she was gifted by a university friend.
The pair were spotted taking a selfie on Ingrid's digital camera before continuing to walk through the university.
Ingrid Alexandra looked casual on the day in a blue cardigan, loose white trousers and a striped headband by Swedish brand Djerf Avenue.
She opted to go make-up free for the outing, letting her natural beauty shine through, and added to her ensemble with classic silver earrings and chunky rings.

McDonald's worker risks the wrath of her boss as she poses with British rapper charged with rape in her Perth drive-thru and shares it to social media
A McDonald's employee has raised eyebrows by uploading a photo of herself posing with Yung Filly in the drive-through of her workplace. The UK rapper, 29, is currently facing rape charges in Perth, which he has pleaded not guilty to, and his trial is set to take place on 20 April 2026. This week, he stopped by a McDonald's in Western Australia where the Macca's worker recognised the musician and grabbed a photo with him to share to TikTok. The picture has since gone viral, with the post amassing 40,300 views at the time this article was written. In the photo, the woman could be seen standing at her drive-through window while Yung Filly sat in his car outside after picking up his food order. Both were smiling, with the musician wearing a grey hooded jumper, while the McDonald's employee wore her work uniform and a gold cross necklace. Daily Mail has reached out to McDonald's and the Perth woman for further comment. Yung Filly is currently facing more charges after allegedly raping a woman in a hotel room. The British star, who is fighting allegations he raped and choked a woman after a gig, has been hit with two more charges as his trial date is set. Yung Filly, whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos, appeared in Perth District Court in June. He is accused of sexually assaulting a woman in her 20s in a hotel room following a performance in the city's northern suburbs in September 2024. He previously pleaded not guilty to four counts of sexual penetration without consent and three counts of assault occasioning bodily harm. The entertainer has also denied impeding the woman's normal breathing or circulation by applying pressure to her neck. He is now facing two additional counts of sexual penetration without consent, although no plea has been entered. The additional charges were briefly mentioned in court but not explained and his lawyer declined to discuss the change outside court. The London rapper, who has 1.8 million YouTube subscribers and millions of Instagram and TikTok followers, will face a 10-day trial on April 20, 2026. He was arrested in Brisbane and extradited to Perth in October. He was previously fined and banned from driving for six months after pleading guilty to reckless driving in November while on bail. Trans woman sexually assaulted man by concealing she had male genitalia while on a 'date', court hears
A transgender woman has been accused of sexual assault after she 'concealed male genitalia' during a night with a Snapchat date. Ciara Watkin, 21, spent the night with a man after they exchanged messages on the social media platform. Paul Reid, prosecuting, told Teesside Crown Court heard Watkin performed sex acts on the man after he arrived at a house in Thornaby, north Yorkshire, a number of years ago. Mr Reid said Watkin pretended to be on a period so that the man would not touch below the defendant's waist. The prosecutor then told the jury that Watkin later contacted her date to reveal 'a massive secret.' Messages sent between the two were read out to the jury. When the alleged victim asked if the secret was that she was pregnant, Watkin replied: 'I'm trans. I'm sorry I didn't tell you.' The man messaged: 'WTF. So you have a d***?' before repeating his question. Watkin added: 'That's why I haven't s****** you.' 'The defendant had concealed from the man that she had a penis, during their brief relationship,' Mr Reid told the jury. 'The man told the police that if he had known Watkin was transgender, he would not have consented. He said: "I don't swing that way".' The court heard that Watkin's Snapchat profile used a female cartoon avatar and that there had been no discussion about sexuality or gender. When arrested, Watkins told officers: 'Me and him had sex without me telling him I was a boy. When I let him know I was a different gender, he didn't like it.' 'She agreed that sexual activity had taken place,' Mr Reid said, outlining the prosecution's case. Watkin, of Thornaby, denies two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual assault by penetration. The trial continues.

Nigerian migrant, 31, squares up to judge as he appears in court accused of groping two women while staying in taxpayer-funded hotel
A Nigerian migrant has appeared in court accused of sexually assaulting two women when he was staying in a migrant hotel in London. Olusola Kamson, 31, allegedly groped two women on two separate occasions in Islington, north London, on August 7 and August 12 this year. The defendant, who had been staying at the Thistle City Barbican hotel, appeared at Highbury Magistrates' Court wearing a grey prison tracksuit and flanked by three prison guards. Avnita Bhudia, defending, said: 'I have spoken to the doctor, and Mr Kamson was seen by the mental health team in court, assessed under the Mental Health Act. 'Unfortunately, the mental health team have left the court building today, and there is insufficient information as to where Mr Kamson could be taken if he is sent to hospital. He will have to be sectioned and sent to a hospital at a later date.' Kamson interrupted and shouted: 'What about an A&E department? I have never signed anything with her. I don't know who she is.' Magistrate Gerry Teague had told Kamson: 'Please stand up. We do not have enough information to deal with your case.' Kamson interrupted, and shouted: 'Can I talk to my embassy please? I don't know who she my lawyer is.' He then squared up to Magistrate Teague, by putting his head on the glass panel. He then shouted: 'Give me an opportunity to speak. I have never seen the lawyer in my life. Why is she representing me?' As he was led to the cells, Kamson shouted: 'Just watch.' Kamson appeared at Highbury Magistrates' Court again on Tuesday for a plea hearing, but his case was adjourned again, and no pleas were entered. He will next appear at Highbury Magistrates' Court on September 9, 2025 for a plea hearing.
