No more traffic jams in Tokyo? ANA to launch electric flying taxis in Japan by 2027
Japanese airline All Nippon Airways (ANA) is preparing to introduce electric air taxis in Japan through a partnership with California-based start-up Joby Aviation, with operations targeted to begin as early as 2027. The two companies announced plans on Thursday to establish a joint venture that aims to deploy over 100 electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. The five-seater aircraft, intended to carry a pilot and up to four passengers, can travel at speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour. According to ANA, the initial routes under consideration would connect major transport hubs such as Narita and Haneda airports with central Tokyo. Currently, these journeys typically take over an hour by train or car. The proposed air taxi service could cut this time to roughly 15 minutes. While pricing details have not yet been finalised, ANA told AFP that it hopes to make the service affordable to a broad range of passengers. The first public flight demonstration is expected to take place during the Osaka Expo in October 2025. The aircraft are designed to lift off vertically like helicopters before transitioning to forward flight, similar to aeroplanes. Joby Aviation has stated that its aircraft will operate with minimal noise and produce zero emissions while in use. Joby's founder and chief executive, JoeBen Bevirt, described Japan as a promising location for launching the next generation of air mobility, citing the country's combination of tradition and technological ambition. The announcement comes amid a mixed outlook for the emerging flying taxi sector. In December 2024, German start-up Volocopter filed for insolvency. The company had been developing a two-seater model called Volocity, which was due to debut in 2025. However, Volocopter was forced to cancel planned test flights during the Paris Olympics after failing to obtain the necessary certification for its aircraft engine in time. Another German firm, Lilium, narrowly avoided collapse around the same period after facing financial difficulties. The success of the ANA-Joby partnership will depend on several factors, including regulatory approvals, public acceptance, and the development of take-off and landing infrastructure across urban areas.

Toyota Kirloskar extends export pact with Kamarajar Port amid rising global demand
CHENNAI: Toyota Kirloskar Motor has extended its long-term logistics agreement with Kamarajar Port near Chennai, cementing the southern port's position as a key node in the Japanese automaker's global supply chain. The new 10-year deal, effective from April 2025 to March 2035, will allow Toyota Kirloskar to continue using the port's roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) terminal for automobile exports and imports at concessional wharfage rates. The agreement comes as Toyota scales up international shipments of its India-made Urban Cruiser Hyryder and other models to more than 20 countries. The deal was signed in the presence of Chennai Port Authority and Kamarajar Port chairman Sunil Paliwal, and Irene Cynthia, managing director of Kamarajar Port Ltd (KPL). Strategically located on India's east coast, Kamarajar Port has emerged as a critical export hub for carmakers operating in southern India, with strong road and rail links to manufacturing clusters in Chennai, Bengaluru, Hosur, Coimbatore, and Salem. Its general cargo berth—capable of handling the world's largest car carriers—boasts a 3.7 lakh sq.m backup yard, the largest automobile parking facility in any Indian port, with space for 25,000 vehicles. Toyota has shipped over 180,000 units through KPL since 2012, beginning with a modest batch of 247 Etios models bound for South Africa. Since then, its global footprint has expanded steadily, with exports now reaching markets across Africa, the Middle East, and Europe—including the UAE, Egypt, France, and Saudi Arabia.

SoftBank's AI investment spree to be in focus on at Q1 earnings
By Anton Bridge TOKYO: When Japan 's SoftBank Group reports earnings on Thursday, its mammoth investments in artificial intelligence companies are set to take the spotlight. Analysts and investors are keen for updates on how they will be financed, the timeline for returns to materialise and whether assets will be sold to fund the new projects. SoftBank has embarked on its biggest spending spree since the launch of its Vision Funds in 2017 and 2019. It is leading a $40 billion funding round for ChatGPT maker OpenAI. SoftBank has until the end of the year to fund its $22.5 billion portion, although the remainder has been subscribed, according to a source familiar with the matter. It is also leading the financing for the Stargate project - a $500 billion scheme to develop data centres in the United States, part of its effort to position itself as the "organiser of the industry," founder Masayoshi Son said in June. SoftBank has yet to release details on what kinds of returns its financing of the Stargate project could generate. The extent of third-party investment will determine what other financing tools, such as bank loans and debt issuance, it may have to deploy. In July, SoftBank raised $4.8 billion by selling off a portion of its holding in T-Mobile. "If other sources of capital are less supportive, SoftBank could look to asset-backed finance, which is collateralised by equity in other holdings," Macquarie analyst Paul Golding said. The Japanese conglomerate is expected to post a net profit of 127.6 billion yen ($865 million) in the April-June quarter, according to the average estimate of three analysts polled by LSEG. That would mark SoftBank's second consecutive quarter of profit and follow its first annual profit in four years when it was helped by a strong performance by its telecom holdings and higher valuations for its later-stage startups. Its results are, however, typically very volatile and difficult to estimate due to manifold investments, many of which are not listed. SoftBank's performance in exiting from investments and distributing profits has been patchy of late. The Vision Funds had made a cumulative investment loss of $475 million as of end-March. That said, 13 of 18 analysts have a "buy" or "strong buy" rating for SoftBank's stock, according to LSEG. Although there is some concern in the market that AI-related valuations have become bubbly, they continue to climb. OpenAI is in early-stage discussions about a stock sale that would allow employees to cash out and could value the company at about $500 billion, according to the source - a huge jump from its current valuation of $300 billion.
