ED arrested me as I stopped BJP from coming to power in 2019, was protective wall of MVA govt: Raut

The Print18-05-2025

The book is about Raut's experiences in prison after ED arrested him in an alleged money laundering case in 2022, soon after the collapse of the Thackeray government. Raut later got bail.
In his book, 'Narkartala Swarg' (Heaven in Hell), Raut also claimed action was taken against him as he was the 'protective wall' of the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government which came to power that year.
Mumbai, May 18 (PTI) Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has claimed the primary reason behind the Enforcement Directorate arresting him in an alleged money laundering case was because he stopped the BJP from coming to power in Maharashtra in 2019.
'The primary reason behind (the ED) action against me was I stopped the BJP from coming to power. I also stood as a protective wall in defence of the Thackeray government. After that the Thackeray government collapsed.
'The (Eknath) Shinde government was formed through unconstitutional means. Both Shinde and (then Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis) must have agreed on one thing that if the government has to function, Raut must be behind bars,' he claimed.
Raut said the BJP was hurt that it had to sit in the opposition despite bagging 105 seats (in the 288-member assembly in the 2019 polls).
'With Sena joining hands with Sharad Pawar-led NCP, the BJP had to sit in the opposition. The BJP considered Raut the reason why it could not form the government in Maharashtra in 2019.The BJP always had this regret,' he claimed.
The BJP and the Shiv Sena had contested the 2019 assembly polls together. But the Sena parted ways with the BJP over the post of chief minister.
Later it became a part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi comprising the Congress and the (undivided) NCP. The MVA government was led by Thackeray.
The Rajya Sabha MP, known to be a fierce critic of the BJP, said the former ally could not see Uddhav Thackeray as the CM in 2019 so its leaders plotted to topple his government.
With the government having a majority of 170 MLAs, it was not possible that their 'Operation Lotus' would succeed, he said.
'Which is why central agencies entered the battlefield. Anil Deshmukh, Nawab Malik and Sanjay Raut were fixed as targets,' he said.
The federal agency had decided upon a political agenda and had made a list of MVA leaders to be arrested in Maharashtra. The list included Deshmukh, Malik and Raut, the book claimed.
Deshmukh and Malik, both from the NCP, were ministers in the Thackeray government.
The ED had tightened its noose around 11 of the 40 MLAs (including Shinde) of the undivided Shiv Sena who revolted against Thackeray. The ED was also going to arrest some of the MPs of the undivided Shiv Sena, Raut claimed. PTI PR BNM

Bihar Elections: Alliance On Track, NDA Seat Finalisation Soon; Nitish Kumar To Be CM Face

Last Updated: According to sources, ticket distribution in the Bihar assembly elections within the NDA is likely to follow the same formula as in the Lok Sabha elections The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has decided to contest all seats in the upcoming Bihar elections, with sources saying seat distribution may not have been decided yet but other factors have been considered. 'Which caste will get representation on which seat has already been decided for all the 243 seats," a top source told CNN-News18. The state leaders have held several rounds of meetings to understand the share of seats that the NDA wants to contest. Another two or three rounds of meetings are expected to take place before the focus shifts to the finalisation in Delhi. After that, a detailed meeting with the alliance partners will take place to firm up plans for all the 243 seats. Also, there is no doubt in the mind of the alliance that Nitish Kumar will continue to be the face of the bloc. The decision to continue as chief minister after the elections will be left to Kumar, the sources added. On the kind of commentary that political leaders have been making against Kumar's conduct, BJP sources indicated: 'Any sensitive and sensible politician will never make a remark on somebody's health… One should always refrain from commenting on the health of seniors." Alliance partners Chirag Paswan, Jitan Ram Manjhi, and Upendra Kushwaha will contest in the state. Paswan had expressed his wish to contest the assembly polls, pushing forward his 'Bihari first' stance, and his party gave the go-ahead in a recent meeting. According to sources, ticket distribution in the Bihar assembly elections within the NDA is likely to follow the same formula as in the Lok Sabha elections. In the Lok Sabha elections, BJP contested 17 seats, JD(U) 16, LJP five, while Jitan Ram Manjhi's HAM and Upendra Kushwaha's Rashtriya Lok Morcha contested one seat each. Although BJP contested one more seat than JD(U) in the Lok Sabha polls, in the assembly elections, JD(U) may contest on one or two more seats than BJP. As per sources, JD(U) may contest around 102–103 out of the 243 seats, while BJP may contest on 101–102 seats. The remaining roughly 40 seats will be allotted to Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM), and Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM). The BJP has decided that it will not award a ticket to a candidate whose feedback is negative in the last two surveys that the party has done. Seat sharing and seat allocation will also be done on the basis of ability to win. 'Any alliance partner who has lost the seat more than twice may be exchanged with the other alliance partner," the top sources added. Earlier, it was speculated that Union Home Minister Amit Shah would go to Bihar on June 15 but his visit stands postponed. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to travel to Bihar on June 20 for an engagement in Siwan. The Election Commission has indicated that the Bihar assembly polls will take place in either two or three phases. The full bench of the EC, including chief election commissioner Ganesh Kumar, is expected to travel to Bihar this month. First Published: June 10, 2025, 13:09 IST

Robert Vadra Summoned Today For Questioning In Land Deal Case By Probe Agency ED

New Delhi: Businessman Robert Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and brother-in-law of Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, has been summoned for questioning today by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case linked to a 2008 Haryana land deal. The ED served the summons today; Mr Vadra is yet to show up at the federal agency's office in central Delhi. Mr Vadra was questioned in the case for about 16 hours over three days in April in an ED action that he had termed a "political witch hunt" against him and his family. The deal at the centre of the ED case against Mr Vadra is about a land in Haryana that was bought by his company, Skylight Hospitality, in 2008 for Rs 7.5 crore. Its value spiked after Mr Vadra obtained a permit to develop a housing society on the land. In 2012, he sold it to DLF for Rs 58 crore. With the Congress in power in Haryana at that time, the BJP accused them of stealing the land from farmers to give to Mr Vadra. Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who was then the Chief Minister, had denied the allegation. "The Congress did not give even an inch of government land to Robert Vadra. If the BJP shows proof, I will leave politics," he had said when the BJP raised the issue again before last year's assembly elections.

NCP factions hold parallel rallies on 26th Foundation Day; reject merger talks

Mumbai: On the 26th Foundation Day of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), both factions of the party -- one led by NCP (Sharad Pawar) President Sharad Pawar and the other by Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar -- will hold parallel events in Pune. While Sharad Pawar will address the party workers at Bal Gandharva Rang Mandir in Shivajinagar, Ajit Pawar will host a large gathering at Balewadi Stadium. The simultaneous events will be marked by displays of strength, as both groups assert their relevance and future direction in Maharashtra's political landscape. Ajit Pawar, who parted ways with his uncle Sharad Pawar in 2023 and aligned with the BJP-led Mahayuti coalition, has since taken control of the NCP name and its 'clock' symbol following a legal battle. Despite speculations about a possible reconciliation ahead of the upcoming local and civic body elections, both sides have dismissed any talks of merger or alliance, stressing their distinct plans for political consolidation. Speaking to IANS, Maharashtra NCP President and MP Sunil Dattatray Tatkare said, "Today is our 26th Foundation Day. We are celebrating not only with joy but with the strong spirit of our secular thought. Really happy to be with the development of the state and the country. As a state President, I am proud that we are a part of this process. So I wish all the success and the best wishes to my party workers across the state and even across the country." NCP National Spokesperson and former MP Anand Paranjpe told IANS, "Today, we are celebrating the 26th foundation day of the Nationalist Congress Party with great enthusiasm and joy. Our National President and the Deputy Chief Minister of the state, Ajit Pawar, will be guiding us with his address. Over 50,000 people will be here and Ajit Pawar will guide us for the future." Meanwhile, NCP (Sharad Pawar) MP Amol Ramsing Kolhe, told IANS, "Both are different parties, and each party is celebrating its own foundation day. I believe there is no need for anyone to have any problem with this." "However, respected Sharad Pawar is recognised across the country as the torchbearer of the ideology of Shahu, Phule, and Ambedkar. That's why, on the occasion of the Foundation Day, there is great enthusiasm among all workers and office-bearers to get Pawar Saheb's guidance," he said. In Nagpur, NCP (SP) leader Ishwar Balbudhe echoed the sentiments of party workers who are caught between the two factions. "Since the day the Nationalist Congress Party was founded, we have been working with it. But in the past couple of years, a lot has happened, and everyone has seen it. What is needed now is for both leaders to come together, because it's the grassroots workers who are struggling," he told IANS. "The upcoming local body elections will see party workers fighting on the ground. If everyone fights separately, the first conflict will be between workers of the same party -- NCP workers fighting among themselves, Shiv Sena workers fighting each other," Balbudhe added. In a gesture symbolising unity, local leaders in Nagpur had even put up posters featuring both Ajit and Sharad Pawar, hoping for a reunion. NCP (SP) Pune city President and former Pune Mayor Prashant Jagtap paid glowing tributes to the senior Pawar, telling IANS, "Leaders like Sharad Pawar are not born to retire. Over the past 67 years, from forming the party to uplifting people and driving development across Maharashtra and the country, he has contributed immensely in every sector. I believe Sharad Pawar can never retire -- he was born solely for the progress of Maharashtra and the nation."
