LSU? Clemson? Head Coach Brian Kelly Thinks LSU Is 'THE Death Valley'
While both stadiums are known as Death Valley, LSU head coach Brian Kelly says they're letting Clemson borrow the name.
Since Kelly's time at LSU, the Tigers are 0-3 in season openers, and Clemson could be their toughest opponent yet.
In 2024's Week 1, LSU fell short to the USC Trojans, losing 27-20. The 2023 season saw Brian Kelly face his worst season opener, losing 45-24 to Florida State. Going back to his first season leading the Tigers, Kelly also lost to the Seminoles, 24-23.
As the winningest active NCAA coach with 313 victories, Kelly boasts a 29-11 overall record and a 17-7 SEC record.
Entering his 18th season as Clemson head coach, Dabo Swinney has had more success in season openers, with a 12-4 record.
However, Clemson has also struggled in its recent season openers, suffering a 34-3 defeat to Georgia in 2024 and a 28-7 loss to Duke in 2023.
With a 180-47 overall record, Swinney is the all-time winningest coach in Tiger history.
While Clemson opens as a three-point favorite in the Week 1 matchup, LSU leads the all-time series between the Tiger teams 3-1.

Cleveland blows 9th-inning lead, loses 10th consecutive game
CLEVELAND — What's the worst thing to see after a month of being arguably the worst offense in baseball? Arguably the best starting pitcher on the mound would be pretty high up on the list. The Guardians are last in the majors in runs scored over the last month, they're on a nine-game losing streak and they've been shut out five times during that stretch — and now they'll face Tarik Skubal and the Detroit Tigers on July 6 at Progressive Field. Follow along here for live score updates, analysis and highlights from the Guardians-Tigers game on July 6. Tigers beat the Guardians The Guardians have lost to the Tigers 7-2. Their losing streak has reached 10 games. Considering the circumstances, this is without question the most back-breaking loss of Cleveland's season thus far. Cade Smith leaves game after being hit with a comebacker And now Cade Smith is leaving the game after being hit with a comebacker. He walked off under his own power. Tiger crush Cade Smith for six-run 10th inning In a pretty stunning inning, the Tigers have knocked around Cade Smith for six runs. After Trey Sweeney's three-run home run, Riley Greene added another home run to put the Tigers up 7-1, completely stunning Progressive Field. In the top of the ninth, the Guardians were one strike away from a shutout win, and they're now trailing 7-1 in the 10th. Trey Sweeney hits 3-run home run off Cade Smith in 10th inning The Tigers have a 4-1 lead in the 10th. The visiting dugout is going wild, the home dugout is dejected. With Cade Smith on the mound, Javy Baez blooped a single to right field to put runners on the corners (including the free runner). Trey Sweeney, a left-handed hitter, then sliced a three-run home run off the left-field foul pole for a home run, giving the Tigers their first lead of the day in the 10th inning. This would feel like a back-breaking loss for the Guardians if they can't recover. Guardians, Tigers going to extra innings The Guardians nearly won it in the top of the ninth, and they nearly won it in the bottom of the ninth, but this game is going to extra innings. Angel Martinez opened the bottom of the ninth with a double to right field to put the potential winning run in scoring position. Nolan Jones and Bo Naylor, collectively, could only move him to third. With two outs, Daniel Schneemann lined a ball to the left side, but it was caught by Javier Baez. The Guardians and Tigers head to the 10th tied 1-1. Cade Smith is entering the game. Tigers tie it in the 9th on a wild pitch by Emmanuel Clase The Guardians were one strike away from snapping their nine-game losing streak and beating Tarik Skubal and the Tigers — and then it quite literally slipped through their fingers, in a way. Emmanuel Clase, in the top of the ninth, put the tying run on base via a hit-by-pitch. Pinch runner Zach McKinstry then stole second and moved to third on a grounder. With two outs and the tying run 90 feet away, Clase had two strikes on Parker Meadows looking to end the game, but a pitch in the dirt trickled behind catcher Bo Naylor, and McKinstry scored the tying run. Steven Kwan gives Guardians lead over Tigers in 8th inning The Guardians were able to get Tarik Skubal out of the game, and they've taken the lead in the eighth inning. Austin Hedges singled and was followed by Brayan Rocchio, who drew a walk against Tigers reliever Bailey Horn. That led to Steven Kwan, who ripped a double to right field to score the first run of the game and give the Guardians a 1-0 led. Kwan is 3-for-4 today. The Guardians pitching staff has put together another terrific day, and this time, Cleveland might be able to actually highlight it. Emmanuel Clase is warming in the bullpen. Hunter Gaddis pitches 6th inning; Tarik Skubal escapes jam as Guardians, Tigers still tied Hunter Gaddis pitched a quick seventh, and Tarik Skubal pitched around a double from Angel Martinez by striking out Johnathan Rodriguez to end the inning, and the Guardians and Tigers will go to the eighth inning with both teams still searching for the first run of the day. It feels like the the first team to score, wins. Skubal now has a 10-strikeout day with three hits allowed in even innings. It's his 13th double-digit strikeout game this season, which leads the majors. Tarik Skubal, Gavin Williams in a pitcher's duel; Guardians, Tigers scoreless through 6 innings Tarik Skubal and Gavin Williams have both been outstanding today, with each delivering six shutout innings. Williams walked three but allowed only one hit along with eight strikeouts, throwing 97 pitches. Hunter Gaddis is entering the game for the Guardians to open the seventh inning. Skubal has given up just two base runners all day (two singles). He's also struck out eight. Skubal, though, has been more efficient, only needing 78 pitches to get to the seventh inning. It's been a pitching masterclass from both starters. And the Guardians pitching staff continues to be excellent, the offense simply hasn't been there to make it count. Steven Kwan makes highlight reel catch while crashing into left-field wall Gavin Williams is through the third inning, in part thanks to Steven Kwan, who made a tremendous catch while hitting the left-field wall to rob Colt Keith of extra bases. Guardians, Tigers score: Gavin Williams, Tarik Skubal through 2 scoreless innings Tarik Skubal is through two hitless innings with two strikeouts. Gavin Williams has nearly matched up, only allowing a walk through his first two frames. Below is some pregame information. 'Stick to the plan': Guardians rattle off 10-2 stretch to follow 10-game losing streak
CLEVELAND — It was two weeks ago that the Guardians walked off the field against the Detroit Tigers, losers of their 10th consecutive game, the last of which was delivered in the most back-breaking fashion of them all. They were backsliding out of the playoff picture altogether, unable to gain any offensive traction — 10 losses in a row, five of them via shutout, and the sun was beginning to set on any postseason hopes. Manager Stephen Vogt maintained a level of calmness through the turbulent waters of a double-digit losing streak, insisting that the lineup was putting together quality at-bats and, with the pitching staff delivering quality outings, the tide would soon turn. On July 6, the Tigers rallied in the ninth and then put together an onslaught in the 10th to deliver a desperate Cleveland club consecutive loss No. 10. Since that day? The Guardians are an American League-best 10-2. They've averaged 7.5 runs over those 12 games. The pitching staff, which was mostly terrific even during the losing streak, is now being supported. Guardians schedule among MLB's easiest to finish 2025 With a 6-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on July 22, which brought their post-All-Star-break record to 4-1, the Guardians were back to a .500 record at 50-50 through 100 games. The route back to an even-.500 record was rocky but, as of the end of the July 22 slate of games, the Guardians were 2.5 games out of a wild card spot despite being less than 2.5 weeks removed from that double-digit losing streak. "Obviously you want to be higher up, you want to have more wins, but given the way that these first three and a half, almost four months have gone, we have 62 games left — let's go, let's not stop," Vogt said. "Our guys have been playing great baseball for the last two weeks and, like we said, even during that 10-game stretch, we weren't playing horrible. "We got to keep it rolling." Vogt's message, while from the outside it seemed as though the ship was sinking, was essentially to stick to the plan. It bled into the clubhouse, then the dugout, then the batter's box. After a few weeks of the lineup seemingly viewing runs like pulling teeth at the dentist's office, the dam has been apparently broken and, with it, the Guardians are back in the thick of the wild card race. "Our guys are buying into the plan and they're sticking to it," Vogt said. "I think it was [Steven Kwan] telling [Nolan Jones], 'Hey, stick to the plan.' They're talking about it, they're living it. It's just been good to see." Manager Stephen Vogt guides Guardians through 10-game losing streak, followed by 10-2 stretch Lengthy losing streaks are almost inevitable for every club in every season. It's the nature of the game that features 162-game seasons. But while players know better than to panic too early, there's also a human element to it all. By the end of that 10-game skid, Cleveland was eight games below .500 and looking up at half a dozen teams in the wild card race, with the AL Central division all but wrapped up by the Tigers. Now? They have not only have as much momentum as any team in the American League but also one of the easiest remaining schedules over the final 62 games. That momentum could flip tomorrow, and the offense could again backslide into some shutouts. But after a brutal losing streak, the Guardians have climbed back into the race, and they again have their collective heads above water, which might also alter how they attack the trade deadline. For the time being, their season is about perseverance more than anything else. "Yeah, I mean, I feel like it had to roll our way after those 10 games at some point," starter Tanner Bibee said. "I feel like that was one of the toughest stretches of baseball we're been a part of. But I feel like we all knew it was going to swing back our way eventually, and we just had to be ready for it and ride it as long as we can." EA forecasts quarterly bookings below expectations on cautious gamer spending
By Zaheer Kachwala (Reuters) -Electronic Arts forecast second-quarter net bookings below Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, pressured by uncertain consumer spending on its core sports portfolio amid a challenging economic environment. With shifting U.S. trade policies threatening to push inflation higher, gamers have become more cautious with discretionary spending. EA said the bookings forecast includes a four percentage point year-over-year headwind, due to changes in recognizing returns from the Ultimate Edition of "FC 26", which will be booked in the third quarter. Earlier this month, EA launched "College Football 26", hoping to build on the success of last year's edition, which became one of the best-selling titles of 2024. However, analysts warned that growth comparisons for "College Football 26" may be challenging, given the breakout success of its predecessor, which revived the franchise after a more than 10-year hiatus. The company said it expects a more "normalized curve" for College Football sales, partially offset by the launch of "Madden NFL 26". Its shares were up more than 1% in extended trading. EA last week unveiled the first trailer for "Battlefield 6", placing a big bet on the title to reinvigorate the franchise after the previous installment fell short of fan expectations. "With Battlefield competing in the shooter category this year after not releasing a title for four years, we think Battlefield stands to benefit more than Call of Duty does in the back-half of 2025," D.A. Davidson & Co analyst Wyatt Swanson said. Battlefield competes with Activision Blizzard's "Call of Duty" franchise, which has long-been the dominant player in the first-person shooter genre. "Battlefield 6" is set to launch in EA's current fiscal year with analysts expecting the game to sell millions of copies. EA forecast second-quarter bookings of between $1.80 billion and $1.90 billion, below analysts' expectations of $2.01 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. For the first quarter, EA reported bookings of $1.30 billion beating estimates of $1.29 billion.
