Manager fired for kissing a colleague? Court says it is not sexual harassment-- Tells company to rehire him
Sometimes life is stranger than fiction, and a weird incident that happened in China is a proof of this. A recent report reveals that a senior manager in eastern China— who is identified only as Lin— was fired back in 2015. The reason: he allegedly hugged and kissed his female colleague, who is known as Shi, on an office staircase. The company called it sexual harassment and cited CCTV footage as proof to terminate him. However, Lin denied the accusation and took the matter to court. While the first court sided with the company, citing misconduct, Lin appealed— and the tables turned. In a strange twist, Shi-- the woman who was involved in the case, told the court that Lin never misused his power and that they had a good relationship. Supporting his case, a higher court ruled in Lin's favour, ordering the company to rehire him and pay compensation for lost wages. Lin's salary? A whopping ₹1.34 crore a year! The court also said there was no concrete rule broken, nor any evidence of Lin using his position for personal gain. The company's strict 'moral standards' weren't official policy— making the firing legally unjustified. The company's identity remains undisclosed, and the marital status of both individuals is still unknown. Meanwhile, had a similar incident happened in India, a case of sexual harassment would have been handled quite differently as such incidents are guided by the POSH Act (2013). In India, companies are required to conduct a fair internal investigation before taking any disciplinary action. They cannot act on their own, unlike in the China case. Instead, an Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) must be involved in such matters. If the woman involved clarifies that there was no harassment or misuse of power, the ICC has the authority to close the case without taking action. However, even if not deemed harassment, such behavior might still be considered unprofessional—especially given India's conservative workplace culture. Displays of affection at work, even if harmless, can easily spark criticism or gossip. If an employee is wrongfully terminated, he has the right to take the matter to court, seeking compensation or reinstatement. But legal proceedings in India can be long and drawn out, often taking years. While trade unions may step in to support the employee, their influence is limited in the private sector. ‘Asim Munir tried to approach my wife…': Imran Khan slams Pakistan Army chief
Imran Khan, Pakistan's jailed former prime minister, has accused Army chief general Asim Munir of displaying a "vindictive nature," alleging that Munir turned against his wife, Bushra Bibi, after being removed from the position of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief during Khan's tenure. Imran Khan claimed that Asim Munir tried to approach his wife through intermediaries to discuss the matter. In a post on X on Monday, Imran Khan said his wife categorically declined, saying that she had no involvement in such affairs and would not meet him. 'It is General Asim Munir's vindictive nature that is behind Bushra Bibi's unjust 14-month incarceration and deplorable inhumane treatment in prison,' Imran Khan said Further, Khan said his wife has been targeted for 'personal vengeance' and that even during Pakistan's darker times of dictatorship, this never happened. Talking about the accusations against his wife, Khan said: 'She was accused of aiding and abetting, an allegation for which no proof has ever been presented, and she is arrested in one false case after another.' He also added that his wife is a private citizen and a homemaker with no political involvement, who he has not met in the past four weeks. 'According to jail regulations, I was scheduled to meet her on June 1 but even that meeting was denied, in complete violation of court orders,' Khan, who has been in jail for nearly two years, said. Imran Khan also talked about the events of May 9 when military installations were targeted by India. He said the events were a part of the 'London Plan' and the sole purpose of it was to eliminate Pakistan's largest political force, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. Calling it a "premediated plan" he said that several of his party leaders and workers were unlawfully imprisoned. Khan also alleged that the anti-terrorism courts and several judges are also involved in this campaign against his party. Adding that they refuse to examine the CCTV camera footage, Khan said 'not a single judge has the courage to demand those tapes and deliver a verdict based on evidence". The cricketer-turned-politician also called for the formation of a judicial commission to conduct an investigation into the events of May 9 and November 26, 2024. Slamming the judiciary in Pakistan, he called them a disgrace and that they are driven 'not by justice but by a desire to protect their own jobs and privileges,' Khan said. (With PTI inputs)

A woman rashly driving a car struck several people, killing one and injuring two others on a footpath near Shia PG College in Lucknow on Tuesday afternoon, police said. Among the two injured, one is a 10-year-old, who was hospitalised. Around 3:30 pm, the speeding car first hit the extension of a cafeteria near the college and then ran over a bicyclist before hitting a street pole that brought it to a stop, police and eyewitnesses said. The incident was caught on CCTV, the footage of which has been doing the rounds on social media. 'Upon reaching the spot, police found out that the car (bearing registration number UP32KE0037) had veered off its path and climbed the footpath. It had struck people standing there before colliding with an electric pole,' said Lucknow police in their official statement. According to eyewitnesses, the woman was driving rashly, which resulted in the car losing control. 'It crashed into a pole, otherwise, it would have injured more people,' said one. Police said Tanu Gupta, 35, who lives in Saadatganj area of the city and works in the real estate sector, was driving the car. She was coming from the Daliganj Crossing when she struck people. Madyeganj SHO Rajesh Singh said, 'The woman was an experienced driver and had her driving licence as well. She was not under the influence of alcohol.' The SHO added an FIR had been registered under relevant sections of the BNS in the case. Police, with the assistance of locals, rushed the injured to the Balrampur Hospital. Virendra Pandey, 45, from Khadra succumbed to his injuries during treatment, said the statement. Pandey was a contract worker at KGMU. His brother Sunil Pandey said he was returning home from a market when he was run over. He is survived by his wife Saroj, son Krishna and daughter Anya Pandey. Daksh Sonkar, 10, who hails from Bansmandi Bhanu Tola on Sitapur Road and was under medical care, was one of the two people injured in the accident. The other is a woman, but was yet to be identified. She is believed to be a beggar. She sustained minor injuries in the mishap. Mujahid, an eyewitness, said: 'I was heading towards the crossing on my bicycle when I saw a car speeding down the other track. As I approached the gate of Shia PG College, I heard a loud noise. I stopped my bicycle and saw that the same car had run over several people. I rushed to the spot. One of the injured was being taken in an e-rickshaw, but he appeared to have died already. All of this happened within 3-4 minutes.' The car in question was seized and taken to a police station. Authorities confirmed that no law-and-order disturbance took place following the accident.
