Excise licence fee hike, liquor prices, rentals take the fizz out of Pub City
'In the last six months, around 50-60 pubs and bars in the city have either shut shop or exchanged hands,' said Chethan Hegde, National Restaurants' Association of India (NRAI), Bengaluru chapter head, and owner of '1522', a prominent chain of pubs in the city, 'Hike in licence fee, manpower and rentals, along with escalation in liquor prices in the last couple of years has adversely impacted F&B business in the city,' he added.
'Bengalureans are grounded and smart spenders. An increase in liquor prices is impacting people, who love to dine out. They have cut down on the number of occasions they would go out to dine. It is liquor that spirals up the restaurant bill and people are being careful. Many have home bars. Instead of drilling a hole in their wallet to dine out, they would rather call in food from outside and relax with friends at home, at a much lesser cost and for a longer time, with no added headache of navigating through traffic and parking woes,' said another pub owner.

Market under pressure as Trump tariff offsets RBI's expected rate cut pause
India's equity market closed slightly lower on Wednesday as investors grew cautious following US President Donald Trump's threat on Tuesday to substantially raise the tariff on Indian goods within 24 hours. This was in response to India's continued imports of Russian oil. Trump acted on his word and on Wednesday signed an executive order imposing an additional 25% tariff on India, raising the total tariff on Indian goods imported by the US to 50%. Experts believe this tariff increase will negatively impact India's outbound trade to the US, which is valued at nearly $100 billion. The move is also expected to affect the earnings of many companies that derive a significant portion of their revenue from exports to the US. Sunny Agrawal, Head of Fundamental Research at SBI Securities, told TNIE that the market may open flat or slightly lower on Thursday with a negative bias. This is because the tariff will apply only after 21 days, creating uncertainty about whether and when it will actually come into effect. 'By allowing 21 days, Trump is keeping the negotiation window open, which is likely to provide some relief to investors. I also feel most negative cues are already factored in,' said Agrawal. He added that sectors like Gems & Jewellery and Textiles, which have maximum exposure to the US market, have seen sharp corrections in recent sessions. Regarding pharma companies, Agrawal said, 'It is difficult to predict the impact because imposing taxes on medicines is not easy for any country.' Concerns over escalating US-India trade tensions overshadowed the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) decision to keep the repo rate unchanged at 5.5%, a move that was widely anticipated by markets.

TNPDCL receives 50 bids for 3 crore smart meter project after nine deadline extensions
CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) is believed to have received around 50 bids in total for the tenders it had floated in six separate packages to install 3 crore smart meters across Tamil Nadu in two phases. After extending the deadline nine times since April, mainly due to various clarifications sought by potential bidders, the deadline for submission of bids ended by 2 pm on Tuesday, soon after which the bids were opened. A senior TNPDCL official told TNIE that not more than 50 bids had been received for all six separate tender packages together. 'We are now reviewing the technical and commercial aspects of the bids. A special committee has been formed to hold negotiations with bidders. Those who agree to take up the work at the lowest price with adherence to all technical and regulatory compliance will be given priority,' the official said. Adani Energy Solutions Limited was the lowest bidder in the previous tender. However, during negotiations, TNPDCL cancelled the entire process and called for fresh tenders on March 14. After postponing the bid opening date nine times, the bids have now finally been opened. The corporation plans to complete the negotiation process and finalise the tenders before the first week of September. Initially, TNPDCL had planned to install three crore smart meters in one phase under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. However, the plan was later revised to be executed in two phases. In the first phase, 1.4 crore smart meters will be installed across the state.

Messi's Kerala visit called off as Argentina pulls out of 2025 match deal
KOCHI: The uncertainty has ended, on a sour note. Superstar Lionel Messi and his Argentina team will not play in Kerala this year. Having reassured football fans several times over the past eight months that the world champions would play in Kerala, Sports Minister V Abdurahiman on Monday finally conceded that the much-hyped visit is not happening. While the Argentina Football Association has expressed willingness to consider the March 2026 window, the state government has decided not to accept that arrangement, the minister said. 'What we agreed for was a match here in 2025. But in a recent communication, the AFA has breached the agreement,' Abdurahiman told the TNIE. He said the state government had reached an agreement with the AFA to have Messi and company playing in Kerala this October, the Argentine football body has conveyed that the deal is not possible anymore. 'This has happened after the transfer of funds required in line with the agreement,' the minister said. He said the initial communication was made as the AFA sent an invoice via email, offering the October international break. 'The agreement was made almost six months ago and we were awaiting clearances from the finance department, Reserve Bank of India, and the Department of Sports and Youth Affairs. After that, we successfully transferred the funds. Last week, we received the communication indicating the postponement,' the minister said. Further, he said the state government has officially conveyed to the Argentine Football Association that a 2026 window is unacceptable.
