Woman throws husband under the bus after police find firearms in her home during a raid
All three suspects face charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and Contravention of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000).
Police have arrested three suspects and recovered firearms during a raid in Port St. John's this week.
According to Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, police conducted a coordinated intelligence-driven operation by Saps Tactical Response Teams (TRT) and Combat units from 12 to 13 June 2025.
'Acting on credible intelligence regarding illegal firearms linked to taxi violence and cash-in-transit robberies, the TRT Recce Team, supported by OR Tambo and Joe Gqabi Combat Teams, executed search warrants at two homesteads in Tombo A/A and Mthumbane,' said Gantana.
Police raids
At the first address (Tombo A/A), a 46-year-old woman presented a firearm license for a shotgun and 9mm pistol but failed to produce a competency certificate or valid documentation for ammunition.

Her co-accused, a 52-year-old man, was found in possession of an unlicensed shotgun. Exhibits seized are as follows: 1 x Shotgun, 1 x 9mm Pistol, 1 x Pistol Magazine, 33 x 9mm Cartridges and 5 x Shotgun Shells
At the second address in Mthumbane, a 38-year-old woman was found with a wooden case containing multiple rifles. She claimed no knowledge of the firearms, stating they belonged to her husband. Exhibits seized were 10 x AK-47 Rifles, 19 x Magazines, 100 x 7.62 Cartridges,10 x Cleaning Kits, 4 x 9mm Pouches and 10 x Oil Canisters.
All three suspects face charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and Contravention of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000).

They are scheduled to appear before the Port St. John's Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.
'This operation underscores SAPS' commitment to dismantling criminal networks that terrorise our communities. The seizure of weapons, especially military-style rifles, disrupts planned violent crimes and enhances public safety. We urge communities to report illegal firearms anonymously via Crime Stop,' said Acting Provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso.
Firearms and explosives
In another incident in the North West, the Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation, in collaboration with the Crime Intelligence and Tactical Response Team (TRT), arrested a 32-year-old suspect on Thursday for allegedly dealing in explosives.

The suspect was arrested in Kanana township following an intelligence-driven operation. This follows information received about a suspect alleged to be in possession of explosives stolen from a mine, which were being sold.
The team operationalised the information and nabbed the suspect soon after selling the explosives for R10 000.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Orkney Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Fewer guns mean fewer funerals in South Africa
Gun violence still haunts South Africa despite crime drops. To save lives, we must urgently tighten firearm control laws. Every three months, we receive a new set of crime statistics. Numbers rise and fall and we talk about trends. But behind every number is a name, a family, and a future cut short. The latest Gauteng crime statistics, released by provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Tommy Mthombeni, show a 10.8% decrease in the murder rate – a welcome relief. But let's be clear: firearms are still the weapons most used to kill in this province and nationally. Imagine a taxi rank in Tembisa. Two men argue over a fare. One pulls a gun and suddenly, what could have been a fistfight, becomes a funeral. This is not a headline. It's real life for many in Gauteng. Road rage, alcohol-fuelled disputes, domestic fights – these situations turn deadly not just because of anger, but because someone had access to a firearm. ALSO READ: 13-year-old MP boy charged with attempted murder of cousin Despite the drop in murders, guns remain the leading method to murder in Gauteng and South Africa. That's like saying the fire is smaller – but it's still burning through homes. The statistics also reveal a chilling trend: 75 cases of multiple murders, with 191 victims. In two incidents, seven people were killed at once. Communities like Soshanguve and Kagiso are facing what can only be described as low-level warfare – yet it's often invisible to those watching from afar. What weapon makes it possible to kill that many people that quickly? You already know the answer. Kidnappings rose by 15.8%. Many of these abductions involved violence or threats – most often at gunpoint. The trauma doesn't end when a victim is rescued. Guns make it easier for criminals to control and intimidate. ALSO READ: Owning a gun can get you killed, says Gun Free SA The murder of 11 police officers – 10 off-duty, with these killings too often involving the officer's service gun being stolen, even after hours, when service guns should have been handed in by law, is a reminder that even trained professionals are not safe. If officers with firearms and training aren't protected, what chance does the average person have? We welcome the 2% drop in sexual offences and the awareness campaigns reaching thousands. But we cannot ignore this fact: a woman is five times more likely to be killed if her abuser owns a firearm. Removing guns from violent homes must be part of our gender-based violence strategy, yet SA's 2020-2030 National Strategic Plan on Gender-based Violence and Femicide doesn't include a single mention of firearms. As Gun Free SA, we propose: Reducing the number of guns – legal and illegal; Accurate record-keeping is a pillar of effective gun control, yet our records are a shambles. We need to urgently fix the Central Firearms Registry, including reassigning management of the Registry if the SA Police Service can't deliver on it; Enforce the Firearms Control Act. It worked before – and saved thousands of lives. It can work again. But only with oversight, training and accountability; and Table the Firearms Control Amendment Bill to close loopholes. What does gun-free safety look like? Like Thuli in Tembisa walking home without fear, like Sipho in Alexandra not flinching when a car backfires, like homes where anger doesn't end in murder by pulling a trigger. Let us recommit to making SA a gun-safe country. The fewer guns we have, the safer we are.

Alleged underworld kingpin Andre Naudé shot dead in Parow
Naudé was on trial for the murder of steroid king Brian Wainstein along with alleged underworld figures Jerome 'Donkie' Booysen and Mark lifman. Crime scene experts and the anti-Gang Unit detectives are investigating a case of murder and three attempted murders after alleged underworld figure Andre Naudé was shot dead in Cape Town. It is understood that Naudé, who was previously targeted in shootings and expressed concerns about his safety, was killed in Parow on Thursday afternoon. Shooting Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk said officers combed the scene after the shooting. 'According to reports from the scene, at approximately 14:40 on Voortrekker Road, a vehicle pulled up next to the deceased, who was in the company of friends, and the occupants of the vehicle fired several shots. Two other males aged 45 and 54 escaped injury,' Van Wyk said. Motive Van Wyk said the wounded victim was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment and is under police guard. He said the motive for the shooting incident is the subject of the police investigation. 'A case of murder and three attempted murders were opened for investigation. No arrests have been effected yet. 'Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Karl Jooste on 071 300 5029 or Crime Stop on 08600 10111,' Van Wyk said. Lifman was gunned down seven months ago in the parking lot at the Garden Route Mall on 3 November 2024. Lifman murder 'Donkie' Booysen, another business partner of Lifman and Naudé, arrived on the scene afterwards. Naudé and 'Donkie' Booysen had attended the court proceedings of the two men accused of Lifman's murder, Johannes Jacobs and Gert 'Johnny' Bezuidenhout. The duo are charged with the premeditated murder of Lifman, alleged to have been a ringleader of the city's nightclub security extortion racket.
