Riverwood Plantation businesses prepare for busiest two weeks of the year

Yahoo01-04-2025
EVANS, Ga. (WJBF) – With the Augusta National Women's Amateur on the horizon, local businesses are getting ready in the Riverwood Plantation area.
Riverwood Plantation is just a few minutes from Champions Retreat Golf Club.
Business owners say excitement is building for one of their busiest weeks of the year.
Brinley Walden is an employee at Ironwood Tavern.
'We're pretty excited, getting geared up. We have a crazy week—I think I have 54 hours scheduled, but we'll probably end up at a little bit more. There's a lot of prep to do, but we're excited,' said Walden.
Customers start walking through the doors at 11 AM at Ironwood Tavern.
Walden says they're looking at more foot traffic with Masters-themed specials for the entire month of April starting this week.
'We have a pizza that's called 'The Birdie on the Green'—a little play on the golf. We've got a chicken salad sandwich we're running for the specials, and we have a new peach ice cream waffle dessert. So it's kind of Georgia, Masters–themed specials,' Walden said.
At Woody's Spirits, manager Joshua Willis is stocking up on the top liquor brands that he only sells this time of year.
'Definitely the big name brands. Woodford, Bakers, trying to build up on those. All your high-end wines, Caymus, Prisoner, all these other things that we really sell during the Masters week. Not so much during the rest of the year—a few bottles here and there—but we're getting cases and preorders,' said Willis.
Of course, you can't forget your coffee.
Rooted Coffeehouse is hiring more staff to have all hands-on deck. They say it's the time of year they truly shine as a local business.
'We do a lot more specials, especially to the themes of the Masters. We're going to have a lot of specialty drinks, specialty foods. We're going to have lunch boxes to go for the Masters. It's just the personality of your local baristas versus the chain baristas,' said Carmella Schreffler.
The first practice round for the Augusta National Women's Amateur starts tomorrow, with the tournament officially kicking off this Wednesday.
Business owners say while they're excited for ANWA traffic this week, they anticipate a lot more next week for the Masters.

Kodak warns it may not stay afloat much longer as photography giant's shares plunge 25%

Shares in Eastman Kodak plunged 25% Tuesday after the flailing photography giant warned it may be forced to shut down after 133 years if it doesn't secure a financial lifeline. In an earnings report on Monday, Kodak said it doesn't have 'committed financing or available liquidity' to pay about $500 million in upcoming debt obligations. 'These conditions raise substantial doubt about the company's ability to continue as a going concern,' the company said in a filing. Zigmar Stein – It's hoping to get a boost of cash by halting payments toward its retirement pension plan and aims to have 'a clear understanding' by this week of how it will satisfy its debt obligations. Kodak added that it doesn't expect tariffs to have 'material impacts' on its business because it manufactures many of its own products in the US, including cameras, inks and film. 'In the second quarter, Kodak continued to make progress against our long-term plan despite the challenges of an uncertain business environment,' Kodak CEO Jim Continenza said in a statement. Advertisement Kodak – a household name in the US and overseas – jumpstarted a new era in photography in 1975 when it released the first digital camera. But it failed to capitalize on emerging photo technologies, filing for bankruptcy in 2012 with 100,000 creditors and debts totaling $6.75 billion. The company was forced to pivot to industrial printing and selling branded products, like a Barbie-themed mini photo printer. At the time, its stock price jumped so fast that it tripped 20 circuit breakers throughout the trading session. The Eastman Kodak Company got its start in 1879, when George Eastman obtained his first patent for a plate-coating machine, which is used in printing and film photography. Previously, the hobby had required technical skill and lots of equipment, but now the click of a camera was enough – leading Eastman to coin the slogan: 'You push the button, we do the rest.' By the 1970s, Kodak was responsible for 90% of film and 85% of camera sales in the US, according to The Economist. Eastman claimed he pulled the name out of thin air. 'I devised the name myself. The letter 'K' had been a favorite with me – it seems a strong, incisive sort of letter,' the entrepreneur said.

Blake Tillery announces campaign running for GA Lt. Gov., visits Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Georgia State Senator Blake Tillery (R) kicked off his campaign on Monday to be the next lieutenant governor of Georgia, joining the several candidates running for the position in the state. Tillery made a stop at Daniel Field Airport on Aug. 11 as part of his stat-wide flyover tour to voice why he believes he makes the best candidate for the office. He said if he's elected, he would make changes for the better. 'One of the big things that I want to do is eliminate Georgia state income tax,' Tillery said. 'I believe that Georgia families are feeling the pinch at the pump. They're feeling the pinch at the grocery store. Working families are definitely feeling the pinch on child care. And if we can eliminate Georgia state income tax, we can give them a five percent raise overnight.'
