But it was something else green that helped him achieve that career high.
The Northern Irishman was sporting a pounamu necklace around his neck every day when he drove up Magnolia Lane.
The precious green stone, which is revered by Maori and New Zealanders, was gifted to him by former New Zealand Prime Minister John Key while on a social golf trip to the country's Tara Iti course last December.
Fellow PGA Tour pro and New Zealand native, Ryan Fox, was along on that golf trip too and told the media about McIlroy's good luck charm for the Masters.

He said this week: "Yeah, when we played last year at Tara Iti, he was gifted a pounamu by John Key.
"Rors kind of said to me the first time I saw him after Augusta, and I'd just won Myrtle Beach [Classic], as well, 'John had gifted me that and I felt like it was good luck. I wore it down Magnolia Lane every day.'
"John actually texted me a photo of him in a golf cart with Rory wearing his pounamu, which was really cool.'
He added: "[Key] explains what it means a lot better than what I can, but it's a mark of prestige. We call it 'mana' [spiritual power and charisma].

"It was a pretty cool thing for John to do and obviously it meant a lot to Rory. It was a nice little story that he had a little bit of Kiwi on him when he was at Augusta.'
McIlroy seems to have an affinity to things down under and, according to Fox, has committed to heading to Australia for the Australian Open this winter.

'I've already talked to him about coming down to play the Aussie Open and he can't be more excited about playing Royal Melbourne in a tournament, so that's pretty cool.'

Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast with Gary Lineker, the former midfielder opened up about the trauma of both kidnappings, revealing he didn't even tell his manager about the second one. Mikel, now retired, explained the first incident happened when he was playing for Chelsea under boss Andre Villas-Boas. He said: 'My dad has his own business now which I helped him set up, and he was driving home from work with his driver. "I was finally back in the team, I was playing well — so I told him I'd think about it. "In the end I decided to play but the whole family was crying on the phone." Advertisement Mikel said the negotiations felt 'like buying a car,' with back-and-forth demands until they agreed on a fee. He added: 'I got on the phone with the kidnappers after. Advertisement He said: 'I was in my room getting ready for the game (World Cup). My phone kept ringing and eventually, I picked up. 'My brother said, 'We weren't going to tell you, but we have to, it's happened again. Dad has been kidnapped." Mikel revealed he was torn on whether to tell anyone, adding: 'I sat there for 30 minutes thinking, 'Should I tell the coach? Should I tell the team?' "In the end, I decided not to. I went out and played.' Chelsea star Nicolas Jackson prefers Premier League stay after Bayern Munich make contact over £80m Newcastle target

BAYERN MUNICH have contacted Nicolas Jackson's entourage as they look to replace the injured Jamal Musiala. The German giants are one of a few clubs in Europe that could still afford Jackson despite having signed Luis Diaz from Liverpool for £65.5million this summer. But SunSport has been exclusively told the player would prefer to stay in the Premier League. The Chelsea striker is expected to be allowed to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, but his options appear limited. Manchester United held talks with Jackson but ultimately chose to go all-in for Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko. Aston Villa expressed an interest, with Jackson still maintaining a good relationship with Unai Emery, the manager who gave him his breakthrough in Europe after his move from Senegal. However, Chelsea's £70–80million valuation of the player has made a move financially difficult for many. And that leaves Newcastle, who have turned their attention to Jackson after missing out a host of strikers this summer, including Sesko and now-Liverpool star Hugo Ekitike. The Toon desperately need to bring at least one front man in, with Alexander Isak destined to leave in a British-record move to Anfield. Chelsea star Levi Colwill to miss almost entire season as he undergoes emergency ACL surgery in huge blow to Maresca Jackson has been Chelsea's first-choice striker for the past two seasons scoring 24 league goals in 64 appearances, but the arrivals of Liam Delap and Joao Pedro this summer is set to limit, if not eliminate his game time. Both Delap and Pedro have made flying starts to life at Chelsea, playing key roles in the club's recent Club World Cup triumph in the United States. Meanwhile, Jackson was sent off twice in his last four appearances for the Blues. The writing was on the wall when Jackson was left on the bench for the final, where Cole Palmer reminded everyone why he's regarded as one of the world's best young players, scoring two stunning goals. Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca left the door open for Jackson's departure in his first press conference, stating that "anything can happen" during the transfer window. 6 Liam Delap arrived at Chelsea as a man with a growing reputation Credit: Getty 6 Joao Pedro has had a storming start to life as a Chelsea player Advertisement The Blues boss said: "Nico is okay. He's okay. 'When the transfer window is open, unfortunately or fortunately, anything can happen. This also involves Nico's situation. 'At the moment, we had two new strikers, Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, both of whom are currently in the USA. So we will see what happens." Chelsea will take on Bayer Leverkusen tonight in what is their first pre-season game and it will be interesting to see the kind of role Jackson will play-if he plays.
