JEE Advanced 2025 Question Paper Analysis: The exam was rated moderate to difficult, with Chemistry easiest and Mathematics the toughest, say experts.
JEE Advanced 2025 Exam Analysis: The JEE Advanced 2025, conducted on May 18, was rated moderate to difficult by both students and academic experts. The exam, which is the gateway to admissions in India's prestigious IITs, was structured to test conceptual depth, time management, and analytical thinking across all three subjects — Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
According to Ajay Sharma, National Academic Director – Engineering, Aakash Educational Services Limited (AESL), the exam was well-balanced, with Chemistry emerging as the easiest, followed by Physics, while Mathematics proved to be the most challenging, especially due to its calculation-heavy and time-consuming nature.
Nitin Vijay, Founder and CEO of Motion Education, termed the overall paper as 'moderate to difficult," reflecting the sentiment of many students post-exam. 'Mathematics was undoubtedly the toughest section," he said. 'It included lengthy, conceptual, and demanding questions that required deep understanding and precise thinking. Physics was of moderate to challenging difficulty, while Chemistry was relatively easier, allowing students to conserve time."
'Paper 2 was tougher than Paper 1, primarily due to eight numerical value-type questions without options and the absence of paragraph-type questions, which were a feature in previous years," he added.
Mathematics
Almost unanimously rated as the most difficult section, Mathematics featured lengthy and conceptually demanding questions, especially in Paper 2. The absence of options in numerical value-type questions further raised the bar. Time pressure was a significant factor, making the section not just challenging, but also stressful for many aspirants.
Physics
Physics was perceived as moderate to tough, depending on the paper. While Paper 1 included more manageable numerical and conceptual questions, Paper 2 had lengthier problems, demanding clarity of concepts and strong calculation skills.
Chemistry
As per both student responses and expert opinions, Chemistry was the most student-friendly section. Questions were mostly direct and conceptual, with a balanced distribution among Organic, Inorganic, and Physical Chemistry. This allowed students to attempt this section relatively quickly, buying them time for the more challenging ones.
JEE Advanced 2025 Overall Difficulty Ranking
Based on feedback from students and coaching experts, the subjects in JEE Advanced 2025 can be ranked in order of increasing difficulty as follows:
Chemistry < Physics < Mathematics
The exam tested not only the academic knowledge of aspirants but also their speed, accuracy, and presence of mind—particularly in Paper 2, which was significantly more demanding compared to Paper 1.

Following last year's trend, JEE topper leaves IIT to join MIT, citing better opportunities overseas

Devesh Bhaiya, who secured All India Rank 8 in JEE Advanced 2025 , has chosen to study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the United States instead of joining any of the Indian Institutes of Technology. Devesh is following a growing trend among India's top engineering talent opting for international universities, especially MIT , a TOI report stated. Not the first to make the shift Last year's JEE Advanced topper , Ved Lahoti, who scored 352 out of 360 — the highest in recent years — is also leaving IIT Bombay after one year to join MIT on a fully funded scholarship. In earlier years, students like Chirag Falor (JEE 2020) and Chitraang Murdia (JEE 2014) made similar decisions. Murdia spent a year at IIT Bombay before moving to MIT and later completed his PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. "It seems like MIT trusts the rigour of JEE Advanced and the promise of our Olympiad stars," said Prof Vijay Singh, former professor at IIT Kanpur and retired faculty at the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education. Olympiad medals open global doors Devesh Bhaiya has an academic record beyond the JEE rank. He has won three gold medals — two at the International Junior Science Olympiad (2021, 2022) and one at the International Chemistry Olympiad in 2024. He also received the Bal Shakti Puraskar in 2020. At the age of 12, he authored a paper on light pollution. Though Devesh had already secured admission to MIT in March 2025, he still took the JEE Advanced exam as a backup option. But it lags in research. Globally, it's not even in the top 100. So, I applied to MIT — and when it came through, I took it. A lot of students have taken transfer to MIT and when I asked them, they said the transfer was truly worth it.' Several other top rankers have taken the same route. Nishank Abhangi spent a year at IIT Bombay in 2019–2020 before moving to MIT. Mahit Gadhewala, who secured All India Rank 9 in 2022, also transferred after one year at IIT Bombay. According to Prof Singh, the first student to set this trend was Raghu Mahajan. He studied at IIT Delhi for a year, moved to MIT, completed his PhD at Stanford, and is currently spending a year at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences in Bengaluru. "He was very committed to coming back to India," said Prof Singh. Ved Lahoti expressed a similar sentiment: "I have no plans to settle in the USA." 'Be Consistent': How Mumbai's Sahil Deo Went From Rank 102 In JEE Mains To AIR 7 In Advanced?

Last Updated: JEE Advanced AIR 7 Sahil Deo also hails from a family of engineers. While his father is an engineer at Mahindra, his brother graduated from IIT Delhi and works at Goldman Sachs. 'Being consistent is the key", says 18-year-old Sahil Mukesh Deo who grabbed the seventh spot in the JEE Advanced 2025, the results of which were released on Monday. However, it was no mean feat for Sahil who was quite demotivated after his JEE Mains 2025 exams held in February and April. He had scored an All India Rank of 102. But it was his love for science and motivation by his teachers that kept him going. After securing more than 99 per cent in his 10th boards from Wisdom High International School, Nashik, Sahil, shifted to Mumbai in class 11 to prepare for the JEE Advanced. It was his love for computer applications that made him take up engineering. 'I have always been interested in science especially the application part such as computer science and mathematics. Coding is something that grabbed my attention. Hence CSE at IIT Bombay is a natural choice," the youngster said. He joined Narayana in class 11 for his JEE preparations. While Sahil scored 285 marks in JEE Main session 1, he got 270 marks in session 2. However, he proved that once you set your goals, nothing can stop you and made a comeback in the IIT entrance exam by securing 321 marks out 360 or AIR 7 in JEE Advanced. 'Mains did not go very well for me. The final rank was 102 and I had lost a lot of confidence after that. My teachers really motivated me. They had explained how JEE Mains and Advanced are different exams. Hence, I had to keep myself motivated," Sahil told News18. Talking about his preparation process, he said, 'While I kept no track of how long I studied, I would continue with my preparations at anytime I could. After returning home from classes in the evening, I would relax for sometime, watch some YouTube videos, and then get back to study. Again, take break during dinner time and go back study. It's more about consistency. It's the key. Study whenever you get the chance to and create those opportunities more often. Don't let it slip and think so now I can relax." He had also appeared for Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy Olympiads in 12th standard. 'I was also selected for the Indian National Olympiads in the second level however couldn't crack the third level as I did not really prepare for it," he said. Besides, Sahil also hails from a family of engineers. While his father is an engineer at Mahindra, his brother graduated from IIT Delhi and works at Goldman Sachs. His mother is a housewife. Meet Devdutta Majhi, JEE Advanced female topper who cleared exam by self-study, she is from.., her AIR is…

Devdutta Majhi, who made headlines by topping the West Bengal Madhyamik exams in 2023 and securing the 6th position in the Higher Secondary exams, has now achieved yet another extraordinary milestone. She has emerged as the female topper in JEE Advanced 2025, earning an impressive All India Rank 16 in the Common Rank List with 312 marks. She also topped the state of West Bengal and the IIT Kharagpur zone. Hailing from the IIT Kharagpur zone, she is one of the five students from the region to make it to the top 100. A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School, Devdutta's consistent academic brilliance has now been stamped with national-level success. She chose to prepare from home, using online resources to clear her doubts and improve her understanding. She also regularly practiced through mock tests to sharpen her skills. After finishing her Madhyamik exams in 2023, Devdutta followed a strict study routine, dedicating at least 10 hours a day for JEE preparation. Speaking to The Times of India, she said, 'I had a clear goal i.e. to crack JEE Advanced. I avoided all social events, family functions, and distractions to stay focused.' Advertisement === 'Self-study was my strength,' says Devdutta Majhi Devdutta Majhi believes that success in exams like JEE Mains and Advanced is not something coaching centres alone can ensure. 'You need a proper study plan and consistent practice over two years. At the end of the day, self-study is the most effective tool,' she shared. What makes her achievement even more meaningful is the personal sacrifice that came with it. Devdutta, who used to love playing the violin, set it aside completely during her preparation. 'I didn't touch my violin for two years. It was something I loved deeply, but I knew I had to give it up. The only break I allowed myself was talking to my mother about my studies,' she said with a smile. After securing AIR 16 in JEE Advanced 2025 and emerging as the female topper, Devdutta now wants to get admission in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She wants to explore the world of artificial intelligence and robotics, especially in the field of research. The JEE Advanced 2025, conducted on May 18, saw 1.8 lakh candidates appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Out of those, 54,378 students qualified, including 9,404 girls.
