Hailing from the IIT Kharagpur zone, she is one of the five students from the region to make it to the top 100. A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School, Devdutta's consistent academic brilliance has now been stamped with national-level success.

Unlike many JEE aspirants who depend on coaching centers, Devdutta took a different route. She chose to prepare from home, using online resources to clear her doubts and improve her understanding. She also regularly practiced through mock tests to sharpen her skills.
After finishing her Madhyamik exams in 2023, Devdutta followed a strict study routine, dedicating at least 10 hours a day for JEE preparation. Speaking to The Times of India, she said, 'I had a clear goal i.e. to crack JEE Advanced. I avoided all social events, family functions, and distractions to stay focused.'

'Self-study was my strength,' says Devdutta Majhi
Devdutta Majhi believes that success in exams like JEE Mains and Advanced is not something coaching centres alone can ensure. 'You need a proper study plan and consistent practice over two years. At the end of the day, self-study is the most effective tool,' she shared.
What makes her achievement even more meaningful is the personal sacrifice that came with it. Devdutta, who used to love playing the violin, set it aside completely during her preparation. 'I didn't touch my violin for two years. It was something I loved deeply, but I knew I had to give it up. The only break I allowed myself was talking to my mother about my studies,' she said with a smile.
After securing AIR 16 in JEE Advanced 2025 and emerging as the female topper, Devdutta now wants to get admission in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She wants to explore the world of artificial intelligence and robotics, especially in the field of research.
The JEE Advanced 2025, conducted on May 18, saw 1.8 lakh candidates appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Out of those, 54,378 students qualified, including 9,404 girls.

IIT Madras to offer mentorship, support to students admitted through FACE, ScOpE
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has admitted nine students to its BTech programmes through the Fine Arts and Culture Excellence (FACE) admissions scheme for the first time this year. Under the scheme, two seats per programme are allotted in all BTech and BS courses – one reserved for female candidates and the other gender-neutral. The objective of FACE admission is to reward and encourage students who have achieved excellence in fine arts and culture. Candidates who opted to be treated at par with Indian nationals during JEE Advanced 2025 registration were eligible for FACE admission and had to apply via the dedicated portal – Alongside FACE, the institute runs the 'Science Olympiad Excellence' (ScOpE) scheme and had earlier introduced the Sports Excellence Admission (SEA) from the 2024-25 academic year, becoming the first IIT to offer a dedicated pathway for sports persons. SEA requires students to qualify JEE Advanced, however, admissions are handled through a separate IIT Madras portal, instead of the JoSAA system. These admissions are offered through supernumerary seats, ensuring that the overall intake via JEE Advanced remains unchanged. Students admitted to IIT Madras through ScOPE, who are often academically inclined, receive guidance under the institute's regular faculty advisor scheme at the institute. For the newly joined FACE students this year, a mentorship structure similar to that for sports excellence admissions has been designed, focusing on nurturing their talents and encouraging participation in relevant programmes and competitions, the institute said. 'Support to nurture their talents will be enabled and they will be encouraged to participate in suitable programmes and competitions,' the was told. The Gaokao, China's National College Entrance Examination, is often called one of the toughest academic challenges in the world. In 2025, a record 13.35 million students registered, nearly ten times the number for India's JEE Main and five times that of NEET, making it an academic contest of staggering scale. First introduced in 1952, the Gaokao remains the primary gateway to higher education in China. Unlike many countries, where universities consider a mix of grades, extracurricular activities, and interviews, China's admissions process hinges almost entirely on Gaokao scores. For top-tier institutions such as Tsinghua University or Peking University, where acceptance rates hover below 0.1%, a strong Gaokao performance can open doors to prestigious academic and career opportunities. The stakes are so high that students often spend two to five years preparing, dedicating long hours to study and sacrificing hobbies, social life, and even sleep. Families, schools, and entire communities rally behind candidates, turning exam season into a national event. How The Gaokao Exam Is Conducted The exam is held once a year in June, typically over 2–3 days, with around nine hours of total testing. Students choose between Science (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) and Arts (Geography, History, Politics) tracks, alongside compulsory papers in Chinese, Mathematics, and a foreign language. Running the Gaokao is a nationwide operation on the scale of a major state event. Strict Security – Test papers are printed in highly secure facilities, transported under armed guard, and stored in sealed containers until the exam begins. Digital Surveillance – Exam halls are fitted with CCTV cameras, metal detectors, and signal jammers to prevent cheating. Identity Verification – Students must pass multiple ID checks, including facial recognition in some provinces. In short, JEE Advanced tests how deep you can think, while Gaokao tests how much you can endure. If it's a contest of pure problem-solving skill, JEE Advanced might feel tougher. But in terms of academic load, competition scale, and mental endurance, Gaokao edges ahead. Beyond The Numbers The Gaokao is more than a test; it is a national ritual symbolising discipline, ambition, and perseverance. On average, Chinese students dedicate around 60 hours a week to studying for the Gaokao, with some even leaving middle school entirely to prepare full-time with private tutors. The pressure begins years in advance, often as early as middle school, and has been linked to severe stress, anxiety, and depression.
