'You need a proper study plan and consistent practice over two years. At the end of the day, self-study is the most effective tool,' she shared. What makes her achievement even more meaningful is the personal sacrifice that came with it. Devdutta, who used to love playing the violin, set it aside completely during her preparation. 'I didn't touch my violin for two years. It was something I loved deeply, but I knew I had to give it up. The only break I allowed myself was talking to my mother about my studies,' she said with a smile. After securing AIR 16 in JEE Advanced 2025 and emerging as the female topper, Devdutta now wants to get admission in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She wants to explore the world of artificial intelligence and robotics, especially in the field of research. Devdutta Majhi from West Bengal's Katwa secures top rank among girls in JEE (Advanced)
Devdutta Majhi from West Bengal's Purba Bardhaman district emerged as this year's top-ranked female candidate in the common rank list (CRL) of JEE (Advanced) 2025, with an overall rank of CRL 16. Ms Majhi, who topped from the IIT Kharagpur zone, obtained 312 marks out of a total of 360. In this year's JEE (Mains) examination, she had also secured a top rank in the Session 2 Paper 1 (BE/BTech) with a perfect 100 percentile score. 'I am very happy with the results. I had a good feeling after the examination, I knew it went well. I love mathematics a lot, so I want to join the BTech course for maths and computing at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore,' Ms Majhi told The Hindu on Monday. She added that her second choice would be the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras. 'For my preparation, I did not join any particular coaching institute. I would study diligently at home, and I appeared for several mock tests for practice,' Ms Majhi said. Ms Majhi has a proven record of academic excellence. A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School in Purba Bardhaman district, she ranked sixth in the State in this year's class 12 board examination conducted by the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. In 2023, in the class 10 Madhyamik board examination conducted by the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education, Ms Majhi had secured the first rank in the State by scoring 697 out of 700 marks. Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, took to social media to congratulate Ms Majhi. 'Today's JEE Advanced 2025 examination results show that you have been topper among all girls in the entire country, and the highest rank holder in the IIT Kharagpur zone. You achieved top ranks in our Secondary and Higher Secondary examinations earlier, and now you are the topper girl of India!' Ms Banerjee wrote. Despite many girl students proving their merit in these pan-India entrance examinations, the gender ratio among students, particularly in the IITs, remains largely skewed. According to the Union Ministry of Education's response to a question in the Lok Sabha in 2023, the government had decided to push for female representation in IITs by increasing their enrollment in the IITs' programmes from 8% to 14% in 2018-19, 17% in 2019-20 and 20% in 2020-21 through supernumerary seats. Furthermore, the Central government also encouraged the institutions to improve their gender ratio through special scholarships for female students, counselling activities for JEE (Advanced)-qualified female students, special open house outreach programmes for female high school students to encourage them towards Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), etc.

A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School, 's achievement adds yet another feather to her already stellar academic journey. Speaking to The Times of India , she described her success as the outcome of two years of unwavering self-discipline and focussed self-study. Unlike many aspirants who rely on coaching hubs, Devdutta carved her own path. She studied independently, took online classes to clear doubts, and regularly appeared for mock tests — all from the confines of her home. Her routine after Madhyamik 2023 became one of intense dedication—clocking in at least 10 hours of study every day. 'I had set my goal to crack JEE Advanced to pursue my dreams. I distanced myself from all programmes, family gatherings, and other distractions to focus solely on my studies,' Devdutta shared. 'Coaching centres can't do everything. Cracking exams like JEE Mains and Advanced requires a systematic study plan and daily practice for at least two years. Nothing works better than self-study,' she added. What made this journey more personal was what she gave up along the way. 'I stopped playing the violin, which used to be my favourite pastime. I only picked it up again after the exam. For two years, the only recreation I allowed myself was chatting with my mother about my preparation,' she recalled with a smile. HC turns down principal's bail plea
1 2 3 Kolkata: The bail plea of a blind school principal accused of raping a minor was turned down by the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday, considering the "gravity" of the offence while stating that the survivor has "clearly implicated" him. The bail plea of the principal of a blind school at Behala Chowrasta, accused of raping a child in 2010, was turned down by the Calcutta High Court on May 14. This decision acknowledged the statements filed by the survivor as well as other girls alleging sexual abuse against him. The principal, who is 100% visually impaired according to his lawyer, has been asked to make his arguments at a lower court where the trial is presently ongoing. His counsel, Milan Mukherjee, approached the court stating that he was in custody for one year and 15 days. Mukherjee pointed out to the court that the complaint against his client was lodged 14 years after the incident by the West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights (WBCPCR) in 2024 at Ultadanga PS, which was later transferred to Haridevpur PS. The brief facts of the case are that the blind school principal was accused of sexually abusing the girl and committing penetrative sexual assault within the premises. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Complete protection with iPru All-in-one Term Plan ICICI Pru Life Insurance Plan Get Quote Undo It was alleged that he took advantage of vulnerable conditions multiple times and misused his position. While questioning the long gap in the filing of the complaint, his counsel also pointed out that the accused cannot be charged under the POCSO Act, considering the incident was claimed to have taken place in 2010, which was two years before the POCSO Act was implemented. "The Act does not have a retrospective effect to take into its fold any offence of such nature committed prior to the coming into force of the said Act. Therefore, the petitioner cannot be held liable for the commission of an offence under the POCSO Act," Mukherjee argued. However, Justice Bivas Pattanayak remained firm on the point that these arguments—the POCSO Act section and the delay in filing of the case—can be made before the trial court by his lawyer. Even the argument on the age of the survivor mentioned on her Madhyamik admit card, which indicated that she was 18 years and 6 months old, was observed to be decided in trial."Upon going through the statement of the victim girl recorded before the Magistrate, it is found that she has clearly implicated the petitioner… On the basis of the materials on record and bearing in mind the nature and gravity of the offence, I am not inclined to grant bail to the petitioner," the judge held.
