1 2 Kolkata: Ankan Mondal, son of a marginal farmer in Swarupnagar, North 24 Parganas, conquered multiple hurdles to achieve a rank of 810 in NEET, but his dream of becoming a doctor could have been dashed had it not been for Basirhat Police. At a time, when Ankan's higher education hanged in balance, Basirhat SP Hossain Mehdi Rehman and his team stepped in and promised help. Cops on Thursday presented Ankan with a laptop, a stethoscope, several medical education essentials and a fund, personally contributed by police personnel, at the Basirhat District Police HQ. Ankan is yet to process that his medical education would finally be a reality. "There was a time when I felt hopeless but I never let go of the belief that I would find a way to study medicine. But I never expected police officers to come forward to support me. Their help has given me a new sense of purpose. Now, my goal is to become a successful doctor not only to make my parents proud but also to honour the trust the officers have put in me," he said. Over 70% health complaints resolved via ‘Sorasori Mukhyomantri' helpline: Report

Kolkata: According to data released by Nabanna on Friday, nearly 72% of health-related issues were resolved following calls made to 'Sorasori Mukhyomantri', a helpline launched in June 2023 and monitored by the CMO. Approximately 20% of resolved calls were related to law and order, while 5% pertained to disasters and 3% to power and other civic concerns. Nabanna shared preliminary findings of the scheme along with several case studies. The bulletin highlighted the case of a 10-month-old baby from Malda who was admitted to the trauma care centre at SSKM hospital. The baby, in critical condition after a fall, was initially denied admission due to lack of bed availability and absence of a Swasthya Sathi card. However, after a call to the helpline, the baby's treatment commenced at the trauma care centre. Similarly, Dipu Sarkar from Sonarpur received treatment at SSKM's trauma care centre following a serious accident. Subrata Mondal, who was suffering from pneumonia, was admitted to Medical College Kolkata after dialling the helpline. Kursima Bibi, a cancer patient, received O positive blood after placing a call to the service. In another instance, a Madhyamik examinee was able to prevent her early marriage after she contacted the helpline, prompting immediate action from the administration. In Birbhum's Kusulia, residents reported a faulty transformer and witnessed its early repair after their call. A 14-year-old student with disability in Raiganj, who expressed his desire for mobility, was provided with a wheelchair by the local block development officer. The helpline also facilitated the tracing and rescue of a kidnapped school student by the Sunderbans police following a complaint.

West Bengal denies Centre's outreach on common board, calls move unnecessary for high-performing state

KOLKATA: West Bengal Education Minister Bratya Basu on Thursday said he is yet to receive any communication from the Union Ministry of Education, which has recommended seven states to adopt a common board for classes 10 and 12 after an analysis flagged that they accounted for 66 per cent of student failures last year. Speaking to reporters, Basu said students of the West Bengal boards always perform well, and the class 10 and 12 final examinations conducted by them record a high pass percentage. "We are yet to hear anything about this from the Centre. However, whatever I read in the press, the issue is not relevant to our state. Except for the COVID period, the pass percentage of candidates appearing in both secondary and higher secondary exams in West Bengal has been high," he said. The West Bengal Board of Secondary Education conducts the Madhyamik examination for class 10, while the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education conducts the class 12 final examinations. This year, 86.56 per cent out of the total 9,69,425 candidates cleared the Madhaymik examination, while 90.79 per cent of 4,82,948 candidates cleared the class 12 exams. PTI had reported on Wednesday that the Ministry of Education has recommended seven states to adopt a common board for classes 10 and 12 after an analysis by the School Education Department found they accounted for 66 per cent of student failures last year. The seven states are Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Kerala, Manipur, Odisha, Telangana and West Bengal. There are a total of 66 school examination boards in the country -- three national-level boards and 63 state-level boards (54 regular and 12 open boards). While the top 33 boards cover 97 per cent of students, the remaining 33 boards cover just 3 per cent of students. "Common board for classes 10 and 12 is the way forward for ease of schooling. Not having a common board leads to poor academic outcomes. We have recommended these states to adopt a common board," School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar said. Meet Devdutta Majhi, JEE Advanced female topper who cleared exam by self-study, she is from.., her AIR is…

Devdutta Majhi, who made headlines by topping the West Bengal Madhyamik exams in 2023 and securing the 6th position in the Higher Secondary exams, has now achieved yet another extraordinary milestone. She has emerged as the female topper in JEE Advanced 2025, earning an impressive All India Rank 16 in the Common Rank List with 312 marks. She also topped the state of West Bengal and the IIT Kharagpur zone. Hailing from the IIT Kharagpur zone, she is one of the five students from the region to make it to the top 100. A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School, Devdutta's consistent academic brilliance has now been stamped with national-level success. She chose to prepare from home, using online resources to clear her doubts and improve her understanding. She also regularly practiced through mock tests to sharpen her skills. After finishing her Madhyamik exams in 2023, Devdutta followed a strict study routine, dedicating at least 10 hours a day for JEE preparation. Speaking to The Times of India, she said, 'I had a clear goal i.e. to crack JEE Advanced. I avoided all social events, family functions, and distractions to stay focused.' Advertisement === 'Self-study was my strength,' says Devdutta Majhi Devdutta Majhi believes that success in exams like JEE Mains and Advanced is not something coaching centres alone can ensure. 'You need a proper study plan and consistent practice over two years. At the end of the day, self-study is the most effective tool,' she shared. What makes her achievement even more meaningful is the personal sacrifice that came with it. Devdutta, who used to love playing the violin, set it aside completely during her preparation. 'I didn't touch my violin for two years. It was something I loved deeply, but I knew I had to give it up. The only break I allowed myself was talking to my mother about my studies,' she said with a smile. After securing AIR 16 in JEE Advanced 2025 and emerging as the female topper, Devdutta now wants to get admission in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She wants to explore the world of artificial intelligence and robotics, especially in the field of research. The JEE Advanced 2025, conducted on May 18, saw 1.8 lakh candidates appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Out of those, 54,378 students qualified, including 9,404 girls.

2023 Madhyamik topper comes first among girls with 16th rank in JEE(A)

KOLKATA: A Madhyamik topper in 2023, Katwa's Devdutta Majhi has come out on top among girls in this year's JEE (Advanced), securing an overall rank of 16 with 312 marks. The Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School student, who had ranked 6th in HS, aims to join IISc for further studies. Besides Devdutta, four other candidates from the IIT Kharagpur zone are among the top 100. Following Devdutta's brilliant performance, which she says is the result of two years of hard work, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee congratulated her on X. Devdutta wants to conduct research in the fields of AI and robotics. Devdutta told TOI that she had studied for JEE by herself, without much help from coaching centres. She went online for expert consultations and mock tests. "I kept myself away from all programmes and family gatherings to focus only on studies. One has to practise and study every day, for at least two years, if they want to do well in competitive exams," she said. Since Madhyamik, Devdutta has been studying 10 hours a day. She gave up playing the violin, once her favourite hobby, and went back to it only after her JEE exams. In the last two years, her only pastime has been speaking to her mother about her preparations.
