NEET rank 810: Cops help farmer's son dream big
2
Kolkata: Ankan Mondal, son of a marginal farmer in Swarupnagar, North 24 Parganas, conquered multiple hurdles to achieve a rank of 810 in NEET, but his dream of becoming a doctor could have been dashed had it not been for Basirhat Police.
At a time, when Ankan's higher education hanged in balance, Basirhat SP Hossain Mehdi Rehman and his team stepped in and promised help.
Cops on Thursday presented Ankan with a laptop, a stethoscope, several medical education essentials and a fund, personally contributed by police personnel, at the Basirhat District Police HQ. Ankan is yet to process that his medical education would finally be a reality. "There was a time when I felt hopeless but I never let go of the belief that I would find a way to study medicine.
But I never expected police officers to come forward to support me.
Their help has given me a new sense of purpose. Now, my goal is to become a successful doctor not only to make my parents proud but also to honour the trust the officers have put in me," he said.
The boy from Polta village never let poverty affect his studies as he scored 96% in Madhyamik and 90% in HS. And now, he came 810th in NEET, the all-India entrance test to medical colleges.

"Ankan and his family were overwhelmed by his achievement. But then came the question of funding as Ankan's father, Piyush, a marginal farmer, has only a small plot of land to sustain a family of five," said Rabindra Paul, a neighbour.

Then help arrived from unexpected quarters, completely changing the situation. Basirhat SP Rehman learnt about Ankan's academic brilliance and his family's financial condition through local reports.
Rehman, along with Swarupnagar Police Station OC Arindam Halder and other officers, visited the Mondals and assured the family of supporting Ankan's education.
Piyush turned visibly emotional as police handed the "gifts" to Ankan on Thursday. "What police officers have done for my son is beyond our imagination. I will remain indebted to them. If his dream was dashed, we could not have forgiven ourselves," he said. Ankan's mother broke into tears as she said, "Police stood by us when we had no one to turn to. This will remain a shining example of compassion ."
Promising continued support for Ankan, Rehman told TOI, "Police always stand by meritorious but underprivileged students. It is a matter of pride and joy that we can help Ankan pursue his dream."

Court orders Mumbai housing society to pay Rs 20 lakh compensation for death caused by falling coconut tree
Mumbai: In a rare ruling, a city civil court held an Andheri housing society responsible for negligence and ordered it to pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the father of a 27-year-old man who died after a dead coconut tree on the premises fell on him in 2012. The victim, Kurla-based Rohit Jadhav, was walking towards Andheri railway station after finishing work when the dead tree fell on him. Satya Darshan Co-operative Housing Society Ltd blamed the BMC, claiming that despite requests, the civic body delayed permission to chop down the tree. Refuting the defence, the court said the BMC had already granted permission to cut the dead or dangerous coconut tree, and it was the sole duty of the society to get rid of it to avoid danger to the society members as well as passersby. "In the present case, it is manifest that the society and committee members have not performed their duty to cut the dead and dangerous tree as per the permission of the MCGM, and therefore the incident dated July 18, 2012, happened due to the sole negligence of the defendant society and its committee members," Judge Rajendra Lokhande said. From the compensation amount, the judge deducted Rs 25,000 that the society already paid to the family for medical help. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Want to Become a Profitable Intraday Trader? Key Lies Here TradeWise Learn More Undo The judge further said the BMC granted permission on June 2, 2012, and the society received it on June 7, 2012. The court said despite this, the society did not take "prompt action" to cut the dangerous tree before the incident on July 18, 2012. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai The defendants, the society and its committee members, argued that the tree fell due to "heavy rainfall and windy weather", classifying it as an "act of God". They also claimed that a contractor was hired but refused to work during the rainy season. The court rejected this defence, stating that the society's employment of a contractor did not absolve them of their responsibility to remove the dangerous tree immediately. "...because the dangerous tree can be cut by the crane or by any other means, and it is not necessary to climb on a tree which is dead or dangerous. The stall owners also made complaints or objected to not cutting the tree, which cannot be a ground for the defendant society to postpone the work of cutting the dangerous tree," the judge said. The judge also said that there is no evidence that the incident happened due to heavy rainfall such as a storm, tempest, lightning, or extraordinarily heavy rain. "Therefore, the defence of an act of God cannot be accepted," the judge said. The victim, Rohit's father, Bhagwan Jadhav (64), moved the civil court in 2013 against the housing society, its chairman, secretary, joint secretary, treasurer, and seven committee members. Also named were the BMC and the deputy registrar of cooperative societies. At the time of the tragedy, Rohit was serving in a private company at Andheri East on a monthly salary of Rs 7,500. The incident took place at 5.15pm on July 18, 2012, minutes after Rohit left his office along with a friend, Sopan Gowardhawan. Rohit was struck on the head, causing him to become unconscious with multiple bleeding injuries. He was taken to Holy Spirit Hospital, where he was treated until he succumbed to his injuries on July 26, 2012. An FIR was registered for causing death by negligence. The judge dismissed the father's claim against the BMC and the deputy registrar of cooperative societies, stating they were not liable for the mishap. The judge found that the MCGM fulfilled its duty by granting permission to the society to cut the tree and was not mandated to supervise the work. YSRCP alleges Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam 'malicious invention' by CM Naidu
YSRCP leaders M Gurumoorthy and M Bharat on Saturday alleged that the Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam is a "malicious invention" by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu . Speaking at a press conference in Rajahmundry, they claimed that the case against YSRCP Lok Sabha member PV Midhun Reddy is part of a " political vendetta " aimed at "suppressing dissent and diverting public attention." The leaders accused the TDP government of using the liquor scam as a tool to "silence opposition voices" while deflecting scrutiny from the NDA coalition government's alleged corruption. Live Events Gurumoorthy condemned the "inhumane denial of basic rights" to Midhun Reddy, including barring his sister from tying a Rakhi during his remand, calling it "utterly despicable politics." He also accused the TDP of liquor irregularities during 2014-19, including bypassing cabinet approvals, waiving an eight percent distillery tax, and causing a revenue loss of Rs 6,500 crore through "favouritism and advance payments." Bharat alleged that Naidu's name has become "synonymous with liquor corruption", pointing to the alleged privatisation of liquor shops, the proliferation of illegal belt shops, and inflated prices generating illicit profits. They condemned what they claimed was harassment of YSRCP leaders through "baseless cases" over the past 14 months, alleging that MLAs exploit liquor, land, and sand resources to orchestrate scams in their constituencies for "political gains". Bharat claimed the YSRCP is committed to fighting this "conspiracy" and urged the public to "resist exploitation". He alleged that the TDP-led coalition government's failure to control liquor distribution has "damaged families and communities throughout" the state.

Cop, lover, aide get life for killing farmer in illicit love triangle
Bijnor: A local court on Friday sentenced a dismissed police constable, his lover and her aide to life imprisonment, and another man to five years in prison, for murdering a farmer with whom the woman was also having a relationship and dumping the body in a well in Amroha district in Sept 2019. The case was tried under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, and the four were fined a total of Rs 65,000. Meerut police constable Yogesh Kumar, 35, along with Ruby Agarwal, 29, and Vishesh, received life terms. Veerpal Singh was sentenced to five years for concealing the body. "The court found sufficient evidence to convict all four accused," public prosecutor Manoj Kumar Saxena said. "Yogesh, Ruby and Vishesh will remain in prison for life, while Veerpal will serve five years." Narendra Singh, 40, was married to Balesh Devi and lived in Shakarpur Samsapur village. On Sept 27, 2019, he left home for Amroha but did not return. His wife called his phone the next day, but it was switched off. Narendra's father, Samarpal Singh, then lodged a missing person report at Rajabpur police station. Balesh later told police she suspected Ruby, with whom her husband was involved, of killing him with her accomplices to further her relationship with Yogesh. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like With temperatures hitting 95°F, this is the mini air conditioner everyone's buying in the U.S News of the Discovery Undo Police registered a case against Ruby, Yogesh, Vishesh and Veerpal under IPC sections 302 (murder), 364 (kidnapping) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), and relevant sections of the SC/ST Act. Investigators analysed mobile call records and arrested all four. Narendra's body was later found in a well behind Vishesh's house. Prosecutors said Ruby was in a relationship with both Narendra and Yogesh, and tensions arising from this led to the murder. Amroha superintendent of police Amit Kumar Anand said, "Narendra belonged to a Scheduled Caste. Our investigation confirmed Ruby conspired with Yogesh and his friends to kill him." Circle officer Monica Yadav filed a chargesheet against the four. The police produced them in court, after which they were sent to jail, but they were later released on bail during the trial.
