She chose to prepare from home, using online resources to clear her doubts and improve her understanding. She also regularly practiced through mock tests to sharpen her skills. After finishing her Madhyamik exams in 2023, Devdutta followed a strict study routine, dedicating at least 10 hours a day for JEE preparation. Speaking to The Times of India, she said, 'I had a clear goal i.e. to crack JEE Advanced. I avoided all social events, family functions, and distractions to stay focused.' 'You need a proper study plan and consistent practice over two years. At the end of the day, self-study is the most effective tool,' she shared. What makes her achievement even more meaningful is the personal sacrifice that came with it. Devdutta, who used to love playing the violin, set it aside completely during her preparation. 'I didn't touch my violin for two years. It was something I loved deeply, but I knew I had to give it up. The only break I allowed myself was talking to my mother about my studies,' she said with a smile. After securing AIR 16 in JEE Advanced 2025 and emerging as the female topper, Devdutta now wants to get admission in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She wants to explore the world of artificial intelligence and robotics, especially in the field of research. The JEE Advanced 2025, conducted on May 18, saw 1.8 lakh candidates appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Out of those, 54,378 students qualified, including 9,404 girls.

When the JEE Advanced 2025 results came in, Devdutta Majhi didn't check the website herself. The news came from her mother, and it was the moment she'd been dreaming of.'I was very happy to know this from my mother, it was my dream and it has become a reality,' says dream? A place at IISc Bangalore. Her result? All India Rank 16, the highest for any girl this year. She also topped the state of West But it wasn't just about the rank, it was about every single choice and effort she made along the way.A TOWN CALLED KATWA AND A STUDY-FRIENDLY HOMEDevdutta lives in Katwa, a town in East Burdwan district, West Bengal. Her family played a huge role in her mother, a high school physics teacher, and her father, a college professor, helped build a calm, focused environment that let her thrive.'The only challenge that I faced during preparation is lack of good teachers in our sub-urban area,' she says.'I had to rely on online coaching and support from Delhi teachers. However, my mother helped to create a good environment in our home, perfect for studying,' she that environment clearly worked. She topped her Class 10 West Bengal board exams and ranked sixth in her Class 12 board exams. She also qualified for the Indian National Physics Olympiad (INPhO).A SIMPLE, CONSISTENT ROUTINEadvertisementUnlike the extreme schedules you often hear about, Devdutta's routine was steady and efficient. 'I was fortunate that my school supported me a lot during this journey. I could devote lot of time on self studies,' she attended LIVE online classes from FIITJEE eSchool, connecting with teachers based in Delhi. The flexibility of online learning worked in her favour, especially with no distractions.'I never used mobile for entertainment or relaxation,' she says. 'I used it solely for attending the LIVE online classes. I did not take any pressure as such, I just focused on my studies.'THEORY FIRST, THEN PROBLEMSHer prep method was methodical: 'I focused on the theory part followed by problems. This combination for each topic helps to make the concept strong. It is true for each subject.'While many students dread Physics or Maths, it was Chemistry that tested her patience the most. 'I found chemistry to be difficult and challenging at times. My teachers at FIITJEE helped me to tide over it,' she RIGHT KIND OF SUPPORT MATTERSDevdutta is clear about the role coaching played. 'Right coaching is obviously necessary for guidance wherein the teachers can help to channelise my strengths in the right way and help to overcome challenges,' she FIITJEE mentors offered subject-wise tips, helped convert weaknesses into strengths, and provided full sets of study material, national-level mock tests, and crucial exam coaching alone isn't enough, she adds. 'Besides coaching modules students must have reference books for practice also.'STAYING AWAY FROM THE NOISEThere was no late-night scrolling, no WhatsApp distractions, no Instagram reels. Devdutta's phone was strictly for choice to stay away from mobile entertainment helped her stay focused, even when motivation preparation is not just a test of knowledge, it's about emotional strength too. But Devdutta kept things simple: 'I did not take any pressure as such, I just focused on my studies.'WHAT'S NEXT?Now that the exam is behind her, Devdutta's goal is clear: 'I want to do BTech from IISC Bangalore.'While many top rankers aim for IIT Bombay or Delhi, Devdutta is drawn to IISc, known for its research-first approach and academic depth. It's a fitting choice for someone who's already excelled at national-level FOR FUTURE ASPIRANTSWhen asked what advice she'd give to students hoping to crack JEE, she doesn't talk about shortcuts or would like to tell the students that hardwork has no substitute,' she says. 'They must keep doing it and must have belief in themselves.'Simple words, but coming from someone who's lived them every day, they carry Majhi's journey from a small town in Bengal to becoming the female topper in one of India's top entrance exams is no fairy tale. It's proof of what consistency, clarity, and quiet confidence can didn't have elite coaching centres down the street. She didn't spend hours scrolling on social media. But she did have focus, family, and the will to stick with now, she's not just one of the top JEE Advanced rankers of the year. She's also a quiet inspiration to thousands of students, especially girls, looking to dream big from small towns.

Over 54K clear entrance exams for IIT, 12.7% rise since last year

A total of 54,378 candidates have qualified in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced-2025, the results of which were announced on Monday, marking a 12.7% jump from last year, when 48,248 aspirants cleared the qualifying examination for entry into the premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) . According to the results declared by IIT Kanpur, which was the conducting institute this year for JEE-Advanced, of the 54,378 qualified candidates, 44,974 are male and 9,404 are female. The number of male and women candidates clearing the IIT entrance exam also saw an increase of 11.6% (from 40,284 in 2024) and 18% (from 7,964 in 2024), respectively. While Delhi zone's Rajit Gupta bagged the overall top rank in JEE advanced scoring 332 out of a maximum of 360, Devdutta Majhi of IIT Kharagpur zone topped among female candidates scoring 312 (she was 16th on the common rank list or CRL). 'We successfully ensured that the results were released ahead of schedule at 6 am on Monday before the listed time of 10 am. A key challenge was managing the large volume of data securely and ensuring minimal downtime on the portal during peak traffic,' Prof Manindra Agrawal, director of IIT Kanpur, told HT. The qualified candidates will now compete for around 18,000 undergraduate engineering (BTech courses) seats across 23 IITs. This effectively means that only one in three qualified candidates will be able to secure an IIT seat through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) counselling. A total of 180,422 candidates, out of 187,223 registered for the entrance test, appeared in both papers 1 and 2 of the JEE Advanced held on May 18 across 258 centres in 155 cities. A total of 116 foreign candidates also appeared for the exam, 13 of whom have qualified. In the zone-wise results — thel 23 IITs are divided into seven zones, with each being coordinated by a specific institute for organising and managing JEE Advanced and related administrative tasks across the country — the most candidates, 12,946 , qualified from IIT Hyderabad zone while the Guwahati zone accounted for the least number of successful candidates, 2,743 . Out of the top 10 qualifiers, four are from IIT Delhi zone, three from Bombay, two from Hyderabad, and one from IIT Kanpur zone. This year's JEE Advanced results saw an increase in the number of candidates qualifying compared to last year as the cut-off marks dropped for all categories. This year's JEE Advanced cut-off (or the minimum qualifying marks) was 76 for general category, 66 for OBC-NCL (other backward class, non creamy layer) and EWS (economically weaker section), and 37 for SC and ST (scheduled caste and scheduled tribe). Last year, the corresponding figures were 109 for general category, 98 for OBC-NCL and EWS and 54 for SC and ST. In every course, 10% of seats are reserved for candidates from the General-EWS category, 27% for OBC-NCL candidates, 15% for SC candidates, and 7.5% for ST candidates. Agrawal pointed to the 'unprecedented female engagement' this year, with 43,413 female aspirants, or 23% of the total , registering for JEE Advanced, up from 42,947 a year ago. 'Of the 54,378 qualifiers, 9,404 were female candidates (17.29%). Previous year saw 7,964 female qualifiers out of 48,248 or 16.50%. This is a positive sign of the increasing acceptance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among young women,' the IIT Kanpur director said. He added that the 'record female qualifying numbers are a result of the success of initiatives such as 'supernumerary seats for female candidates' and targeted outreach programmes like 'STEM empowerment for girls' in collaboration with non-profit partners.' Supernumerary seats for female candidates are additional seats created in IITs to improve gender diversity without reducing the existing seats for other candidates.
