She has emerged as the female topper in JEE Advanced 2025, earning an impressive All India Rank 16 in the Common Rank List with 312 marks. She also topped the state of West Bengal and the IIT Kharagpur zone. Hailing from the IIT Kharagpur zone, she is one of the five students from the region to make it to the top 100. A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School, Devdutta's consistent academic brilliance has now been stamped with national-level success. She chose to prepare from home, using online resources to clear her doubts and improve her understanding. She also regularly practiced through mock tests to sharpen her skills. After finishing her Madhyamik exams in 2023, Devdutta followed a strict study routine, dedicating at least 10 hours a day for JEE preparation. Speaking to The Times of India, she said, 'I had a clear goal i.e. to crack JEE Advanced. I avoided all social events, family functions, and distractions to stay focused.' 'You need a proper study plan and consistent practice over two years. At the end of the day, self-study is the most effective tool,' she shared. What makes her achievement even more meaningful is the personal sacrifice that came with it. Devdutta, who used to love playing the violin, set it aside completely during her preparation. 'I didn't touch my violin for two years. It was something I loved deeply, but I knew I had to give it up. The only break I allowed myself was talking to my mother about my studies,' she said with a smile. After securing AIR 16 in JEE Advanced 2025 and emerging as the female topper, Devdutta now wants to get admission in the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore. She wants to explore the world of artificial intelligence and robotics, especially in the field of research. The JEE Advanced 2025, conducted on May 18, saw 1.8 lakh candidates appear for both Paper 1 and Paper 2. Out of those, 54,378 students qualified, including 9,404 girls.

2023 Madhyamik topper comes first among girls with 16th rank in JEE(A)
KOLKATA: A Madhyamik topper in 2023, Katwa's Devdutta Majhi has come out on top among girls in this year's JEE (Advanced), securing an overall rank of 16 with 312 marks. The Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School student, who had ranked 6th in HS, aims to join IISc for further studies. Besides Devdutta, four other candidates from the IIT Kharagpur zone are among the top 100. Following Devdutta's brilliant performance, which she says is the result of two years of hard work, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee congratulated her on X. Devdutta wants to conduct research in the fields of AI and robotics. Devdutta told TOI that she had studied for JEE by herself, without much help from coaching centres. She went online for expert consultations and mock tests. "I kept myself away from all programmes and family gatherings to focus only on studies. One has to practise and study every day, for at least two years, if they want to do well in competitive exams," she said. Since Madhyamik, Devdutta has been studying 10 hours a day. She gave up playing the violin, once her favourite hobby, and went back to it only after her JEE exams. In the last two years, her only pastime has been speaking to her mother about her preparations.

Devdutta Majhi tops JEE Advanced female category, wants to specialise in AI and Robotics from IISc Bangalore
Devdutta Majhi from West Bengal has topped the girls' category in the JEE Advanced 2025. She scored 312 out of 360 and got an India rank (AIR) 16. Notably, she is the only girl in the top 20 ranks this year and had earlier scored 100 percentile in both sessions of JEE Main 2025. Rajit Gupta has secured All India Rank (AIR) 1. It is estimated that more than 1.8 lakh students appeared for the pan India entrance exam that serves as a gateway to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). A student from a state-run school, Katwa DDC Girls High School, Devdutta's love for Math and Physics and her disciplined, self-directed learning reflect her deep academic commitment and clarity of purpose. Devdutta prepared for the JEE while managing her board exam commitments. Speaking to the she shared that she studied at a local all-girls school in the Katwa area. Despite minimal school attendance, 'I only went for practical classes', she relied heavily on self-study. 'I studied for 10-11 hours daily,' she shared. On weekdays, she followed her own schedule and attended coaching only on Saturdays and Sundays in the initial stages of preparation. Relied on self-study over school Devdutta began her JEE journey in Class 11, making a conscious choice to stay focused from the outset. She says she never felt tired during her long study hours, highlighting that she never required external motivation but rather that her motivation to a structured routine and support from her mother helped her succeed. She said, 'My mom used to guide me, and I always had a love for studying, so I never had to worry about losing motivation. Her strategy included NCERT for Chemistry and other theory books for Math and Physics. 'I studied the syllabus and NCERT together,' she added. No social media, no distractions In an age where distractions abound, Devdutta's commitment stood out. She stayed off social media completely and had a simple way to relax, 'I used to stay at home or talk to my mom. That's all.' Upon asking what she loved doing apart from studies, she shared that before her JEE preparation, she played the violin. 'I haven't played the violin in two years, but now that I am done with my JEE Advanced exam, I've started again.' Advice to aspirants: 'Don't Waste Time' Sharing her key tips for future aspirants, she said success is rooted in discipline: 'Don't waste time', 'Do a lot of hard work', 'Follow the teacher's guidance'. She emphasised the importance of routine, focus, and sincerity: 'You need to study well and stay consistent.' While most top rankers set their sights on IITs, Devdutta has a different plan. She shares, 'I don't want to study at an IIT. I want to join IISc Bangalore for Math and Computing (BTech).' When asked what she plans to do after her BTech degrees at the IISc, she wants to specialise in Artificial Intelligence and Robotics.

I wish I could have done a bit better,' she said. A student of Katwa Durgadasi Chaudhurani Girls' High School, Devdutta studied for 10-12 hours daily. Her dream is to join IISc Bangalore to pursue a BTech in Computing, followed by research in Robotics and Artificial Intelligence. Over 1.8 lakh candidates appeared for the JEE Advanced this year. Her mother, Shelly Dan, a physics teacher, expressed pride and surprise. 'I am very happy for her. I had expected a good rank, but not this. She is the female topper. We were waiting for this day. She studied under my guidance. She never took tuitions, just self-study and online guidance. Many students go to Kota or Delhi, but she didn't,' Dan said. Majhi, who enjoys playing chess, caring for stray animals, and playing the violin, credited her preparation strategy to a disciplined study plan. 'I focused on theory in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics first, then practiced problem-solving. I had a lot of books for that,' she said. She also occasionally took online guidance from teachers based in Delhi and Kolkata. For aspirants, she advised that one needs hard work, discipline, and dedication.

Unlike many aspirants who rely on coaching hubs, Devdutta carved her own path. She studied independently, took online classes to clear doubts, and regularly appeared for mock tests — all from the confines of her home. Her routine after Madhyamik 2023 became one of intense dedication—clocking in at least 10 hours of study every day. 'I had set my goal to crack JEE Advanced to pursue my dreams. I distanced myself from all programmes, family gatherings, and other distractions to focus solely on my studies,' Devdutta shared. 'Coaching centres can't do everything. Cracking exams like JEE Mains and Advanced requires a systematic study plan and daily practice for at least two years. Nothing works better than self-study,' she added. What made this journey more personal was what she gave up along the way. 'I stopped playing the violin, which used to be my favourite pastime. I only picked it up again after the exam. For two years, the only recreation I allowed myself was chatting with my mother about my preparation,' she recalled with a smile. Now, Devdutta plans to join IISc Bangalore to pursue a career in artificial intelligence and robotics, with a keen interest in research. In the JEE Advanced 2025, held on 18 May, a total of 1.8 lakh candidates appeared for both Papers 1 and 2. Out of these, 54,378 qualified, including 9,404 female candidates. Apart from Devdutta, four other candidates from the IIT Kharagpur zone made it to the top 100: Hans Daruka (Rank 39), Aritro Ray (Rank 50), Sanyajyoti Biswas (Rank 63), and Nabaneet Priyadarshi (Rank 97).
