Backlash: The Murder of George Floyd review – timely, human-scale recap of momentous times

The Guardian07-05-2025
I t's been a long five years since the horrific murder of George Floyd – long enough to have forgotten the international uprising it provoked, perhaps, but also to ask what the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement really achieved. As the title hints, it's been a bumpy ride.
This unfussy but hardworking British-made documentary is by no means a definitive answer but it provides a timely recap, and a human scale to one of the most momentous events in modern history. Its focus is mainly on the UK side of the story, but it begins and ends in the US; first with police bodycam footage of that fateful day in Minneapolis, as officers pull a confused and anxious Floyd from his car and lay him on the pavement, and also the now-infamous bystander footage of officer Derek Chauvin mercilessly kneeling on Floyd's neck.
One thing that is easy to forget is just how quickly events unfolded. The first protest in Minneapolis was the day after Floyd's death (local civil rights activist Nekima Levy Armstrong emerges as a powerful voice here); within a week, millions of BLM protesters were taking to the streets around the world, and John Boyega was giving an impassioned speech at a huge protest in London's Hyde Park. Just two weeks later, Edward Colston's statue was being pulled down in Bristol and chucked in the harbour. Days after that came the 'white lives matter' counter-protests in Britain, which often devolved into racist chanting and violence against the police. And all this during the Covid lockdowns, with both Donald Trump and Boris Johnson failing to rise to the moment. Fevered times.
The levels of brutality might differ on either side of the Atlantic but Britain's history of slavery, societal racism and police violence against Black people is discussed in detail – from British victims of police violence such as Julian Cole and Dalian Atkinson, to activist Khady Gueye, who fought to stage a BLM protest in the predominantly white Forest of Dean and received racist abuse because of it. Other talking heads reminisce and speak of their lived experience, including Reni Eddo-Lodge, Miquita and Andi Oliver, police chief Neil Basu and satirist Munya Chawawa.
The story ends with Chauvin's trial and conviction nearly a year later but there is no attempt to dress this up as a happy ending. We are left fearing for whatever progress has been made, especially with a Trump second term ongoing. 'There was a moment where we took charge of the narrative,' says Andi Oliver, 'and look how resentful people have been about it.' But this story underlines how BLM at least got people talking about racial injustice like never before, vindicating and emboldening communities that had been oppressed and ignored. That conversation is far from over.
Backlash: The Murder of George Floyd is in UK cinemas from 9 May.

Why Brooklyn Beckham and wife Nicola Peltz didn't invite his brothers Romeo and Cruz to their lavish second wedding amid his family feud

Brooklyn Beckham and wife Nicola Peltz recently had a lavish 'second' wedding, however his parents David and Victoria were noticeably absent from the guest list. Posh and Becks weren't the only family members of Brooklyn's missing from the 200 people guest list, as his brothers Romeo, 22, and Cruz, 20, were also not invited. The brothers absence was reportedly down to a series of online 'trolling' from the duo, according to those close to Brooklyn and Nicola. A friend told The Mirror: 'Brooklyn's brothers have been fanning the openly made fun of and trolled Brooklyn in comments on social media.' Earlier this year, Cruz seemed to issue yet another swipe at elder brother Brooklyn after declaring the 'truth would unfold' amid the family's bitter fallout. Shortly after posting the pointed lyrics from The Beatles 1969 song, he took to social media once again to upload a video of himself playing the guitar. While the post quickly garnered more than 15,000 likes on TikTok, it also attracted a series of comments from trolls - with Cruz quick to hit back. One commented: 'Are you going to stick with this job or going to become a race car driver next or something?' To which Cruz - seemingly throwing shade at his brother Brooklyn's many career paths - responded: 'Wrong brother mate'. Over the years, Brooklyn has tried his hand at several different careers from modelling, to photography to becoming a chef and most recently training as a Formula E driver. It is unknown why the simple social media comments would have bothered Brooklyn to that extent. The actress has previously been accused of 'isolating' Brooklyn from not only his family, but his friends too. As well as Posh, Becks and his brothers, Brooklyn's sister Harper, his grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles were also absent and only found out about the wedding vow renewal by reading it online. The Peltz's friend was responding to questions as to why it was necessary to ban the whole Beckham family from the wedding celebration on August 2. Cruz was asked: 'Are you going to stick with this job or going to become a race car driver next or something?' To which Cruz - seemingly throwing shade at his brother Brooklyn's many career paths - responded: 'Wrong brother mate' Over the years, Brooklyn has tried his hand at several different careers from modelling, to photography to becoming a chef and most recently training as a Formula E driver As one insider said: 'They are trying to make the best decisions for them in what are very unfortunate circumstances. Navigating family stuff is hard and it's ugly.' Astonishingly, they still claim to hope for a reconciliation, the pal added: 'The door is open. No one wants to see this kind of pain exist. There is always hope. At the end of the day. Blood is thicker than water.' Daily Mail has contacted Brooklyn, Nicola and the Beckhams' representatives for comment. Brooklyn and wife Nicola, who first wed in 2022, said 'I do' for a second time in Westchester County in front of her family who had key roles in the day, with the Beckham clan nowhere in sight. Nicola wore her 70-year-old mother's vintage 1985 bridal gown for the big day, while her father Nelson, 83, was given the key role of officiating. Brooklyn become increasingly estranged from his family since he snubbed his father's 50th birthday, and now, the family fear it's a final kick in the teeth. A source told The Sun: 'This was the final kick in the teeth for David and Victoria. Seeing Nelson having such a pivotal role at the ceremony was heartbreaking for David especially. Not one member of the 30-plus extended family knew about the wedding, or were invited. 'His grandparents are devastated too as Brooklyn has always been so close to them.' The source added: 'It feels cruel and spiteful. This is no longer a game. It has gone beyond all that. This is a family who feel they have lost their precious boy - and see no way back. 'Honestly, they are now questioning why he even wants to keep the 'Beckham' surname - will he revert to Peltz? August 2nd 2025 - is this the day Brooklyn formally declared himself no longer a part of the Beckham family? It certainly feels like it.'. As well as Posh, Becks and his brothers, Brooklyn's sister Harper, his grandparents, cousins, aunts and uncles were also absent and only found out about the wedding vow renewal by reading it online (family seen before feud) Daily Mail has contacted Brooklyn, Nicola and the Beckhams' representatives for comment. Brooklyn and Nicola first tied the knot in a lavish £3million ceremony in 2022, when relations first began to sour with his parents in the run-up to the big day. After shunning a dress made by her fashion designer Victoria mother-in-law in favour of a Valentino gown in 2022 - a choice which wasn't well received - Nicola once again snubbed the Spice Girl and wore her mother Claudia's vintage wedding gown. It is a poignant message to Posh and Becks', whom he and Nicola have grown increasingly estranged over recent months. All the while the Beckhams were said to be upset by the Peltz's in 2022 who they felt were taking over the wedding. And ever since their first big nuptials in April 2022, the two families have not reunited and Nicola has rarely been pictured with the Beckhams. The couple shared the images on Instagram on Monday, alongside the words 'only love.' Nicola wore the same original $1.8mill ring set adding a glinting filter onto the dazzling jewels. Brooklyn described the vow renewal as a 'really beautiful experience' while admitting he is still head-over-heels for his wife. Speaking for the first time about the day, the 26-year-old admitted he'd happily do it 'every single day' if he could. Brooklyn said the moment was all about creating a 'really cute memory' they'd treasure forever.

Woman, 23, who tried to smuggle £800,000 worth of crack cocaine into the UK in a wheel of cheese is jailed

A woman who tried to smuggle £800,000 worth of crack cocaine into the UK stashed in a hollowed-out cheese wheel has been jailed. US national Jamie Choi, 23, was stopped by Border Force officers at Heathrow on May 25 after arriving on a flight from Brazil. The California resident was then asked about the 8kg Parmesan cheese wheel she had with her. Choi claimed a friend had suggested she buy the cheese from Lima, Peru, for them to try, but when officers examined the wheel they found it contained crack cocaine. Forensic analysis later revealed the drug to be 94 per cent pure - giving it a street value of £800,000. The National Crime Agency, took over the investigation, tracing Choi's route zig-zagging across South America after flying from Los Angeles to Lima on May 20, 2025. The next day, Choi travelled to Asuncion, Paraguay, and on May 24, she flew to Heathrow Airport, after connecting through Sau Paulo, Brazil. A notebook was found in Choi's handbag, which contained a single handwritten memo dated May 21 – the day she left Lima. It read: 'I dropped out of UCSB (University of California Santa Barbara) on Monday. Currently I am in Paraguay in South America solo travelling for the first time. It's been amazing so far.' Choi, who was charged with importing Class A drugs, pleaded guilty to the offence at Isleworth Crown Court on 6 August. NCA senior investigating officer, Barry Vinall, said: 'We've seen people trying to smuggle cocaine into the UK hidden inside all manner of innocuous looking items, but Border Force and the National Crime Agency are well-practised in finding drugs, whatever the disguise. 'Smuggling drugs into the UK is simply not a risk work taking – it has consequences, as seen in this case.' Choi was jailed for five years and three months on August 12. It comes after last month three Brits who had been warned they faced the death penalty for smuggling drugs into Bali hidden in Angel Delight packets were let off with just a one-year prison sentence. The Indonesian court instead gave 12-month prison terms to the three British nationals, all from Hastings and St Leonards-on-Sea in East Sussex, who had been accused of drug running on the resort island. Jonathan Christopher Collyer, 38, and Lisa Ellen Stocker, 39, were arrested on February 1 after being stopped at Bali's international airport with 17 packages of cocaine that weighed nearly a kilogram, according to public court records. They appeared in court alongside Phineas Ambrose Float, 31, who was allegedly due to receive the packages from them and was arrested a few days later in February. The trio appeared in distinctive white and red prison uniforms before a panel of judges at Denpasar District Court on July 24. Presiding judge Heriyanti declared that all three suspects had violated article 131 of Indonesian Narcotic law - but said he was reducing the sentence because they had admitted their offences and had behaved 'politely'. All three defendants stated that they accepted the verdict and would not file an appeal. The time served since their arrest in February will count towards their sentence, meaning they should be released early next year. The shorter sentence was a surprise as convicted drug traffickers, especially those caught with large quantities, have in the past been executed by firing squad in Indonesia, including foreign nationals.

How fraudster on a jet ski runs a network of cold calling sharks who 'groom' victims into taking out fake domestic appliance cover. So are YOU on their 'suckers list'?

Hundreds of thousands of households are being fleeced by fraudsters who sell them fake insurance for appliances, electrical goods and domestic repairs, a Money Mail investigation has found. Scammers bombard targets with around 40 million cold calls a year, with the true scale of the fraud unknown because most victims do not report it.
