Aitana Bonmati crushed after Spain's shoot-out defeat by England
BASEL – Spain playmaker Aitana Bonmati cut a disconsolate figure as she picked up her Player of the Tournament award at Euro 2025 on July 27, minutes after her side finished as runners-up after losing a penalty shoot-out 3-1 to England in the final.
Bonmati bounced back from a meningitis scare ahead of the tournament to play a crucial role in Spain's progress to the final.
La Roja got off the mark on 25 minutes when Ona Batlle's cross was headed home by Mariona Caldentey. England equalised 12 minutes after the break in similar fashion as Alessia Russo nodded Chloe Kelly's cross past Cata Coll.
However, in general Spain struggled to unlock the England defence and Bonmati missed her spot-kick in the shoot-out as she slumped to another painful defeat, following her club side Barcelona's Champions League final loss to Arsenal in May.
'It's hard to see you right now,' she told reporters. 'Two months ago I found myself in this situation with the club. You have to value more when things are going well, we have been better on the pitch, not on penalties.'
It was a sentiment shared by her coach Montse Tome.
'I think this team deserved more. We worked so hard for a long time to get here, to the final against a top-level side in England, and I thought the team deserved more, or at least to not be left with the feeling we have now,' Tome told reporters after the match at St Jakob-Park in Basel.

The 27-year-old Bonmati apologised to the Spanish people for not being able to deliver a victory against an England side that was no match for them in terms of skill, but who refused to give up.
'I assume my part of my responsibility, I play for the team and for many more people. There is no point in playing a better game and missing penalties,' she said.
'For me, England is a team capable of not playing well and winning. There are teams that don't need much to win.'
Spain, appearing in their first ever European Championship final, enjoyed 60 per cent of the possession overall and had 24 attempts on goal to England's 10. But they paid the price for not putting the game to bed.
'I thought we were the better team but in football it is not always the best team which wins,' Tome added.
'England are a great side and have been so competitive throughout the tournament. They got the equaliser and then defended to try to get to penalties, and in the shoot-out we chose the penalty-takers who we thought would be most effective.'
England took the chance they were offered and though Spain found themselves on the losing side, Bonmati was philosophical.
'We haven't lost a game (in 90 minutes), we have received support and I feel bad about that too. We have won off the field of play and that is valuable too,' she explained, before promising to come back stronger.
'We are a trained team, we have already shown that we know how to overcome. We hope to reach (Euro) 2029 at full capacity and try again.' REUTERS, AFP

Newcastle sign goalkeeper Ramsdale on loan from Southampton
Newcastle United have signed former Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton on a season-long loan, the Premier League club said on Saturday. The 27-year-old England goalkeeper, who made the second-most saves in the league last season at 125, has worked with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during his spell at Bournemouth. "Aaron is an exceptional goalkeeper... Having worked with him before, I know what he can bring to us on and off the pitch, so we look forward to welcoming him into the group," Howe said. Newcastle, who finished fifth last season to secure a Champions League berth, begin their Premier League campaign with a visit to Aston Villa on August 16. Ramsdale joined Southampton from Arsenal last year on a deal valid until June 2028. He joined Arsenal from Sheffield United in 2021 and spent two seasons as their first choice, helping them to a 2022-23 runners-up finish in the Premier League, before losing his starting place to David Raya the following year. After securing promotion, Southampton went straight back down last season and Ramsdale suffered his third top flight relegation after previous drops with Bournemouth in 2019-20 and Sheffield United in 2020-21. Newcastle reject Liverpool bid for Isak: Reports
Sign up now: Get ST's newsletters delivered to your inbox Newcastle United's Alexander Isak (left) has been linked with Liverpool since the end of last season. – Newcastle United have rejected Liverpool's opening bid to sign unsettled Sweden striker Alexander Isak, according to reports on Aug 1. Isak has been training at his old club Real Sociedad this week after reportedly telling Newcastle he wants to leave St James' Park. The 25-year-old has been linked with Liverpool since the end of last season and the Premier League champions are now believed to have formalised their interest with an offer of around £110 million (S$188 million) plus potential add-ons. But Newcastle, who reportedly value Isak at £150 million, remain keen to hold onto their prize asset and have rebuffed Liverpool's initial bid. Isak, who joined Newcastle in a £60 million move from Real Sociedad in 2022, scored 23 Premier League goals last season to help the Magpies qualify for the Champions League. He has three years left on his Newcastle contract, but did not travel to Asia for the Magpies' ongoing pre-season tour , with the club saying he had a minor thigh injury. On July 31, Real Sociedad confirmed he was at their Zubieta facility with his own trainers. Top stories Swipe. Select. Stay informed. Liverpool manager Arne Slot has already bolstered his attacking options by signing Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike and Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz during the current transfer window. But the Reds are keen to make their forward line even more formidable by adding Isak as they look to win back-to-back English titles for the first time since the 1980s. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe struck a defiant note earlier this week when he said: 'He is still our player. He's contracted to us. 'We, to a degree, control what is next for him. I would love to believe all possibilities are still available to us. 'My wish is that he stays, but that's not in my full control.' Football insider Fabrizio Romano said on X that the Magpies will not open doors at least until finding a replacement, adding: 'And it's not guaranteed, at this stage.' Newcastle have been linked with RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, but Manchester United have also entered the frame, with The Athletic reporting that the Red Devils are prioritising a move for the 22-year-old Slovenian. Liverpool have spent over £250 million so far in the summer window, with Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giorgi Mamardashvili joining Wirtz and Ekitike at Anfield. Meanwhile, regulars Luis Diaz, Jarell Quansah, Caoimhin Kelleher and Trent Alexander-Arnold have left Anfield for an initial £115 million. The Magpies, who lost 3-2 to Arsenal in a pre-season friendly at the National Stadium in Singapore on July 27, are in South Korea where they will take on Tottenham Hotspur in their next warmup match on Aug 3, after having lost 1-0 to a K-League All Stars outfit on July 30.
