Sand lorry owners to launch Indefinite strike from May 23

The Hindu04-05-2025

The Tamil Nadu Sand Owners Federation and the Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners Federation have jointly announced a Statewide indefinite strike from May 23, demanding the reopening of closed sand quarries, regulation of M-sand prices, and withdrawal of a recent government order extending quarry licences for up to 30 years.
The decision was made during a consultative meeting held here on Sunday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Sella Rajamani, State president of Tamil Nadu Sand Lorry Owners Federation, said the government's failure to address their long-standing demands had forced the unions to opt for protest.
'We are left with no choice. Though there was an announcement that M-sand prices would be reduced, no steps have been taken so far. The government must regulate M-sand sales and resume sand quarry operations immediately,' Mr. Rajamani said.
'We strongly oppose the new G.O. granting 30-year quarry licences, and we will not remain silent until it is withdrawn,' he added.
The federations warned that the strike, involving a halt in lorry operations across Tamil Nadu, would severely affect the construction sector and could result in an estimated loss of ₹10 crore in daily revenue for the State government.
Further, the strike would affect over 55,000 workers and lorry owners across Tamil Nadu, Mr. Rajamani said.

Constitute student safety panels in schools within two months, Madras HC tells TN government

MADURAI: The Madurai Bench of Madras High Court has directed the school education department to ensure formation of Student Safeguarding Advisory Committees (SSAC) in schools across the state, within two months. A bench of justices SM Subramaniam and AD Maria Clete gave the direction recently on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) petition filed by an advocate G Shabna of Theni, seeking formation of the committees. According to Shabna, the state school education department had passed a G.O. on June 17, 2021, introducing safety guidelines to protect students from sexual harassment. One of the measures mandated through the above G.O. included the formation of SSCAs. The committees should consist of the school principal, two teachers, two parents, a management representative, non-teaching staff, and optionally, an external person, as members. The principal should be a permanent member and half the committee members must be replaced annually, Shabna said.

School Education Dept. told to ensure forming of Student Safeguarding Advisory Committees

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court has directed the School Education Department to ensure constitution of Student Safeguarding Advisory Committees in schools across Tamil Nadu. The court was hearing a public interest litigation petition filed by G. Shabna of Theni district, who sought a direction to the department to ensure constitution of the Student Safeguarding Advisory Committees in government schools, create awareness of the committees among the students and ensure teaching and non-teaching staff complete an annual mandatory orientation programme on the POCSO Act. The counsel for the petitioner submitted that a G.O. was issued by the School Education Department in 2021 providing guidelines to protect and safeguard the students from sexual harassment. The Student Safeguarding Advisory Committees are to be constituted to create awareness among the students. The State submitted that in Coimbatore, Dharmapuri, Dindigul, Kallakurichi, Krishnagiri, Madurai, Mayiladuthurai, Theni, Tiruppatur, Tiruppur and Sivaganga districts, 11,820 government schools had reconstituted the committees. In 2023-24, these schools conducted 42,126 meetings and in 2024-25, 42,194 meetings were conducted. Annual orientation training on the POCSO Act awareness to the teachers and the staff members was conducted in 11,820 government schools in 2023-24, in which 68,245 teachers and 46,281 staff members participated. A total of 70,105 teachers and 49,974 staff members were given training in 2024-25, the State submitted and sought time to compile the data for the remaining districts. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete observed that the Student Safeguarding Advisory Committees had been constituted in several areas, but yet to be constituted in some areas across the State. The court directed the authorities to collect the data in respect of the districts where the committees had not been constituted and initiate action to constitute them as per the G.O. in eight weeks. It posted the matter for reporting compliance to August 5.

Plea to ensure G.O. banning single use plastic is strictly implemented in Palani

The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Thursday ordered notice to Dindigul District Administration on a public interest litigation petition that sought a direction to the authorities to strictly implement the 2018 G.O. that banned the use of single use plastic items. The petitioner sought the strict implementation of the G.O. in Palani taluk in Dindigul district. A Division Bench of Justices S.M. Subramaniam and A.D. Maria Clete sought the response of the authorities to the petition filed by K. Purushothaman of Palani in Dindigul district. He said lakhs of people were visiting Sri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple in Palani and shops and people were using the banned plastic items. The petitioner complained that the shopkeepers and people were continuing to use the banned single use plastic items ignoring the G.O. issued in 2018. These plastic items that included covers, cups, sheets, straws, plates and other such items were still being produced and used. The usage of such plastics affected people's health and caused environmental pollution, he said. The government had issued a notification in 2019 stating that no industry or person shall manufacture, store, supply, transport, sell or distribute, use and throw away plastics and no person including the shopkeeper, vendor, wholesaler, retailer, trader, hawker and salesman shall use and throw away plastics, he said. Even after the G.O. and the notification was issued the district administration had failed to prevent the production and sale of the single use plastic items. The shopkeepers and people were continuing to use these plastic items. They use these plastic items and discard them on the roadside, he said. The petitioner said he had made a representation to the authorities concerned in this regard. However, no action was initiated by the authorities. He sought a direction to the authorities to ensure that the G.O. was strictly implemented and also to take action against the manufacturers and users. The court adjourned the hearing by two weeks.
