UAE & Iran presidents call PM Modi, slam Pahalgam attack

UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan
and his Iranian counterpart Masoud Pezeshkian called PM Narendra Modi on Saturday to condemn the
Pahalgam attack
, amid efforts by countries in the Gulf region to defuse the situation between India and Pakistan.
In the talks with Al Nahyan, a Gulf leader Modi shares great personal rapport with, the two agreed that terrorism should be rejected in all its forms and manifestations. Modi conveyed India's strong resolve to bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime and their supporters to justice.
According to the ministry of external affairs, Al Nahyan expressed condolences on the loss of lives in the "barbaric" terror attack. "He strongly condemned the attack and expressed full solidarity and support with India. The PM appreciated his sentiments and words of sympathy and support," said MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
Pezeshkian too strongly condemned the attack and conveyed his condolences for victims. Both leaders agreed that there could be no justification for such acts of terror and all those who believe in humanity must stand together in the fight against terrorism.

The PM also shared the anger and anguish of the people of India and their resolve to deal with those behind the terror attack and their supporters, firmly and decisively, said the official. The resolve to bring the perpetrators to justice is the common thread running through all conversations and meetings that Indian leaders have had with their foreign counterparts in the past few days.
"PM also conveyed his condolences for the loss of lives in the explosion in Bandar Abbas and wished speedy recovery for the injured," said Jaiswal.
While Saudi Arabia has engaged with both India and Pakistan in the past few days, Iran has publicly said it's ready to use its good offices with the "brotherly neighbours" to forge greater understanding. India remains steadfastly opposed to mediation by any foreign country but has briefed almost the entire diplomatic community about possible Pakistan links with the attack to drive home its point about Pakistan's support to cross-border terrorism.
Egypt is another Arab country that is talking to both India and Pakistan and its foreign minister Badr Abdelatty spoke to counterpart S Jaishankar about the attack. "Appreciate his support and solidarity in regard to Pahalgam attack. Discussed the importance of countering terrorism resolutely,'' said EAM S Jaishankar in a post on X.

Corruption in UP Police recruitment has become history: CM Adityanath
Distributing appointment letters to 60,244 constables of Uttar Pradesh Police, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said on Sunday that corruption in recruitments has become history since 2017, and showcased his government's efforts to make the state riot-free and safe. 'In pre-2017 days, recruitments were done on recommendations and with partiality. But our government has made this history by recruiting these 60,244 constables on merit, with full focus on reservation,' he said. Highlighting the 'perception change' brought about by the BJP's double engine government in UP, CM Adityanath said his government has implemented Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of good and participative governance. 'By making the state riots-free, the double engine government has brought about a change in perception about it and established UP as a prime destination for tourism and investment,' he said. This has been made possible through the BJP government's commitment towards social welfare, good governance and security, he said, adding that the double engine government has made 8.5 lakh appointments in a transparent manner since 2017. He said the appointment of 60,244 constables in the current drive also includes 12,048 women. CM Adityanath also highlighted the commitment of his government to follow PM Modi's mantra of smart policing. 'We are focused on making UP Police modern, alert, reliable and tech savvy,' he said, adding that special attention will be paid to imparting soft skills to the new recruits. CM Adityanath said that the recruitment of 60,244 constables is happening during 'Amrit Kal' and coinciding with 11 years of good governance under PM Modi. The UP CM also highlighted measures taken by his government to improve policing in the state. 'A cyber hub has been set up in each district and cyber help desks have been set up in each police station,' he said, adding that eight new forensic labs have been set up and six more are under construction. For the current round of recruitment of police constables, the state police received 48.17 lakh applications, including 15.49 lakh from women. The highest number of 2,349 appointments has been made in the Agra district.

It spans 9700 square kilometres of which 3,700 square kilometers belongs to Iran. It comprises an oil field and a processing plant. It is thought to hold over 51 trillion cubic meters of natural gas. It holds around 48 per cent of Iran's natural gas reserves. It is responsible for most of Iran's natural gas production – which stands behind only the United States and Russia. 'This is a warning shot that Israel is willing to hit Iranian energy infrastructure if Israeli civilians are targeted, ' Richard Bronze, head of geopolitics at Energy Aspects, told The New York Times. Oil prices had already surged 14 per cent on Friday after Israel attacked Iran. The price of oil eventually settled seven per cent higher – at $73 (Rs 6,200 per barrel). This fresh attack could push oil prices even higher from tomorrow (June 16). Experts also fear the conflict in West Asia could disrupt the flow of oil to the rest of the world. Iran, which is part of Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), currently produces around 3.3 million barrels per day (bpd). Israel targeted Iran's energy and nuclear sites. Iran said that Israel struck its Shahran oil depot in Tehran. An oil refinery near the capital city was also attacked by the Israel Defence Forces. Iran also partially halted production at the South Pars field, the world's largest gas field, after Israel struck the site, causing fire. 'The IDF completed an extensive series of strikes on targets in Tehran related to the Iranian regime's nuclear weapons project. The targets included the Iranian Ministry of Defense headquarters, the headquarters of the SPND nuclear project, and additional targets, which advanced the Iranian regime's efforts to obtain a nuclear weapon and where the Iranian regime hid its nuclear archive," the IDF posted on X. Air raid sirens rang out across Jerusalem and Tel Aviv after Iran launched another round of attacks on Israeli cities. Reports say at least seven people were killed, including a 10-year-old boy and a woman. In total, at least 10 people died and over 300 were reportedly injured in Israel since Iran began its retaliatory strikes on Saturday night. Iran's Revolutionary Guards claimed that their missiles and drones attacked Israel's energy systems and facilities producing fuel for fighter jets – something Israel has yet not acknowledged. Israel launched 'Operation Rising Lion' on Friday, while Iran launched a counter-operation codenamed 'Operation True Promise 3'. US President Donald Trump warned Iran against launching any strikes against the United States, stating that 'full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before". 'The U.S. had nothing to do with the attack on Iran, tonight. If we are attacked in any way, shape or form by Iran, the full strength and might of the U.S. Armed Forces will come down on you at levels never seen before. However, we can easily get a deal done between Iran and Israel, and end this bloody conflict," Trump posted on Truth Social. Israel said its strikes have killed top Iranian generals as well as senior scientists and experts linked to Iran's nuclear programme. Before the attacks on Sunday, Iran's UN ambassador stated that 78 people had been killed and over 320 injured.
