Israel has hit the largest gas field in the world.
Iran has been forced to partially shut operations at the South Pars gas field after a fire caused by an Israeli air strike.
The South Pars gas field is the biggest in the world.
But what do we know about the field? What happened? What will be the impact?
Let's take a closer look
What happened?
First, let's take a brief look at the South Pars gas field.
The South Pars gas field is in Iran's southern province of Bushehr.

Located in the middle of the Gulf, it is jointly owned by Iran and Qatar (which calls it the North Dome).
It spans 9700 square kilometres of which 3,700 square kilometers belongs to Iran.
It comprises an oil field and a processing plant.
It is thought to hold over ‎‏51‏‎ trillion cubic meters of natural gas.
It holds around 48 per cent of Iran's natural gas reserves.
It is responsible for most of Iran's natural gas production – which stands behind only the United States and Russia.
A fire resulted as a result of the strike, according to Iranian authorities.

The blaze, which occurred in one of the four units of Phase 14 of South Pars, has now been tamped down.
It stopped production of 12 million cubic metres of gas.
However, the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company said oil refining and storage facilities had not been damaged and continued to operate.
Iran produces around 275 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per year – around 6.5 per cent of global gas output – all of which is consumed domestically due to export restrictions.

What will be the impact?
This was Israel's first direct attack on Iran's oil and gas infrastructure.
It marks a significant escalation in the conflict between the two nations.
Analysts are worried about the possible fallout.
'This is probably the most important attack on oil and gas infrastructure since Abqaiq,' Jorge Leon, an analyst at Rystad Energy, talking about the 2019 attack on Saudi Arabian oil fields, told Bloomberg.
'This is a warning shot that Israel is willing to hit Iranian energy infrastructure if Israeli civilians are targeted, ' Richard Bronze, head of geopolitics at Energy Aspects, told The New York Times.
Oil prices had already surged 14 per cent on Friday after Israel attacked Iran.
The price of oil eventually settled seven per cent higher – at $73 (Rs 6,200 per barrel).
This fresh attack could push oil prices even higher from tomorrow (June 16).
Experts also fear the conflict in West Asia could disrupt the flow of oil to the rest of the world.
Iran, which is part of Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), currently produces around 3.3 million barrels per day (bpd).

It exports over 2 million bpd of oil and fuel.
'Israeli action has so far avoided Iranian energy infrastructure, including Kharg Island, the terminal responsible for an estimated 90 per cent of Iran's crude oil exports,' said Ben Hoff, head of commodity research at Societe Generale.
'This raises the possibility that any further escalation could follow an 'energy-for-energy' logic where an attack on one side's oil infrastructure might invite a retaliatory strike on the other's,' Hoff said.

Israel attacks on northeastern city of Mashhad: Iranian media

Iranian media on Sunday reported explosions in the northeastern city of Mashhad as Israel kept up its attacks on Iran for a third day. "Two locations in Mashhad suffered explosions and fires," Fars news agency reported, adding that "air defences were activated in the area". The local Tasnim news agency said the blasts were heard near the city's Shahid Hasheminejad Airport. "No damage has been reported to the airport buildings or runway," it added. Mashhad is home to the Imam Reza shrine, the holiest site in Iran for Shiite Muslims. Israel's military said its air force struck Mashhad airport. Live Events It added it was "the longest-range strike conducted since the beginning" of its attack on Iran which began Friday. The Israeli attack has killed top military commanders and nuclear scientists, and struck military bases, nuclear sites and residential areas across the country. Iran has since unleashed a barrage of missile strikes on Israel, leaving at least 10 Israelis dead overnight Saturday-Sunday and dozens more wounded.

Israel-Iran conflict: Trump vetoed Israel's plan to kill Iran's Khamenei, claims report; asked ‘have they killed an American?'

President Donald Trump recently blocked an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to two US officials who spoke to Reuters. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said Israeli forces had identified a window to kill Khamenei as part of their expanding military campaign against Iran, but Trump intervened. 'Have the Iranians killed an American yet? No. Until they do we're not even talking about going after the political leadership,' said a senior US administration official. Trump has been in frequent contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during the ongoing strikes. When asked about the report during an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu responded, 'There's so many false reports of conversations that never happened, and I'm not going to get into that. But I can tell you, I think that we do what we need to do, we'll do what we need to do. And I think the United States knows what is good for the United States. ' Earlier, a senior Israeli official told The Wall Street Journal that targeting Khamenei was 'not off limits' and indicated that Israel was shifting from focusing solely on nuclear sites to striking at Iran's leadership. Israel has already claimed responsibility for assassinating nine nuclear scientists and several top military officials in recent months under 'Operation Rising Lion'. One such strike reportedly caused a structural collapse at Iran's Natanz enrichment facility. The tit-for-tat conflict has escalated sharply. Iran's latest missile barrage under 'Operation True Promise III' triggered air raid sirens across Israel, including in Tel Aviv. In retaliation, Israeli jets struck key locations in Tehran. Supreme Leader Khamenei, in a televised address, declared: 'We will not permit them to evade consequences for this significant wrongdoing they have perpetrated.' While tensions soar, Trump has maintained a cautious stance, urging restraint. 'We knew everything' about the Israeli strikes, he told Reuters on Friday. He has also repeatedly emphasised the need for diplomacy, writing on social media, 'Iran and Israel should make a deal, and will make a deal.' Trump has pointed to his role in de-escalating the India-Pakistan conflict as proof of his diplomatic credentials. However, this balancing act is testing Trump's foreign policy promises. Allies like Tucker Carlson and Senator Rand Paul have urged him to keep America out of the conflict. 'It's not the US's job to be involved in this war,' Paul said.

Yemen's Houthis target Israel with ballistic missiles in coordination with Iran

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis said on Sunday (June 15, 2025) that they targeted Israel in coordination with Iran, the first time an Iran-aligned group has publicly announced joint cooperation on attacks with Tehran. The Yemeni group targeted central Israel's Jaffa with several ballistic missiles in the last 24 hours, military spokesperson Yehya Sarea said in a televised address. Also read: Israel-Iran tension updates on June 15, 2025 'Triumphing for the oppressed Palestinian and Iranian peoples... This operation was coordinated with the operations carried out by the Iranian army against the criminal Israeli enemy,' he added. The Israeli military earlier said sirens were activated in several areas in the country following missile launches from Iran and Yemen. Israel and Iran continued to exchange missile attacks since Israel launched its biggest-ever military strike against its longstanding enemy on Friday. On the same day Israel launched its attack on Iran, Israel said a missile that was launched from Yemen towards Israel fell in Hebron in the occupied West Bank. The Yemeni group however did not claim responsibility for the missile launch. The Houthis have been launching attacks against Israel, most of which have been intercepted, in what they say is support for Palestinians in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war there since Hamas's October 7 2023 attack on Israel. Israel has carried out a series of retaliatory strikes. The U.S. also launched intensified strikes against the Houthis this year, before President Donald Trump halted the offensive after the Houthis agreed to stop attacks on American ships.
