Biggest human imaging study scans 100,000th person

Scientists say they can study our bodies as we age in greater detail than ever before, thanks to more than a billion scans of UK volunteers.
The world's biggest human imaging project says it has now hit its target of scanning the brains, hearts and other organs of 100,000 people - the culmination of an ambitious 11-year study.
"Researchers are already starting to use the imaging data, along with other data we have, to identify disease early and then target treatment at an earlier stage," says Prof Naomi Allen, chief scientist at UK Biobank.
The data is made available at low cost to teams around the world to find new ways of preventing common health conditions from heart disease to cancer.
The 100,000th volunteer to be scanned was Steve, who recently retired from a job in sales and now helps out at a charity run by his daughter.
The BBC watched as he entered a full-body MRI scanner in an industrial park outside Reading, and detailed images of brain cells, blood vessels, bones and joints appeared on the screens.
"My mum was diagnosed with early-stage dementia a few years ago and has not been well," he says.
"So with that in mind I want to give more back to research so the next generation can learn from people like me."
The giant medical imaging project has been running for 13 hours a day, seven-days-a-week across four sites in England.
Participants are given a five-hour appointment to be scanned using five different types of MRI, X-ray and ultrasound machines.
The data gathered is anonymised and volunteers like Steve receive no individual feedback unless the radiographers happen to spot a potentially serious health problem.
The project does not allow personal data, such as a volunteer's surname or the precise area where they live, to be published.
Launched in 2003, UK Biobank is one of the largest collections of biological samples and health data in the world.
In total, half a million people – all middle-aged volunteers – have been asked to complete physical tests, answer regular health and lifestyle questions, and provide DNA and other biological samples.
Their blood, urine and saliva are frozen in liquid nitrogen and stored at temperatures of -80C (-112F) in huge refrigerators in Stockport, Greater Manchester.
The imaging part of the project began in 2014, and involves taking detailed scans of 100,000 of those same participants.
All of that group will be invited back to repeat the process every few years to see how their bodies and organs change as they grow older.
By combining those scans with the other data collected by UK Biobank, scientists can test whether early changes to the make-up of the brain or body then lead to diseases or other health problems in later life.
The whole UK Biobank project, which is non-profit making, was set up by the Medical Research Council and the Wellcome Trust charity, along with the Department of Health and the Scottish government.
Two decades later it is now reaching maturity.
Over 30 petabytes, or 30,000 terabytes, of anonymised health data is already available to researchers working for universities, charities, governments and the private sector.
Scientists in the UK and the rest of the world can apply for access and most are charged between £3,000 and £9,000 to help cover running costs.

Louise Thomas, professor of metabolic imaging at the University of Westminster, says it is "completely transforming" how she and other researchers do their jobs.
"We thought it was a crazy idea, there was absolutely no way anybody could scan this number of people," she says.
"To analyse these images manually would have taken us thousands of years but now... we can extract all the information automatically, so we can measure everything in the body in a matter of minutes."
Researchers are increasingly using artificial intelligence (AI) to process the huge amounts of data generated by the project.
Almost 1,700 peer-reviewed papers have been written using all types of Biobank data since work started in 2003, with dozens more now published every week.
The scans and images taken so far have already been used to show that:
The early onset of 38 common diseases can be predicted by combining MRI scans with other health data and an artificial intelligence (AI) model
Consumption of just small amounts of alcohol each day can be linked to an increased risk of memory loss and dementia
A detailed MRI scan can replace surgery to diagnose and monitor a common form of liver disease
Changes to the structure of the heart may lead to an increased risk of psychiatric disorders including depression
UK Biobank is one of the 10 largest stores of personal health data in the world alongside similar initiatives in Germany, China and the United States, although those projects don't all make their data available to scientists globally in the same way.
The imaging element of the project is also funded by a number of other organisations including the British Heart Foundation, Calico, a subsidiary of Alphabet which also owns Google, and the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, established by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (MRT) attended a callout following reports of an injured hiker. The team were alerted by Cumbria Police e about a young walker who had fallen, hitting her head and resulting in a large lump and cut. The callout occurred on Over Beck, Yewbarrow, and saw an air ambulance attend the scene to help the hiker. A member of Wasdale MRT said: "The team was quickly mobilised, with Helimed 58 also responding immediately. "As usual, aviation fuel was quicker than foot power, and fortunately the helicopter this time was able to land very close to the scene. "After assessment, the walker was airlifted to hospital for further care, with team members meeting up with the rest of the walking party on their way out of the valley." The callout lasted three hours and 12 minutes, and took place on July 24. A member of Wasdale MRT said: "We hope the walker makes a full recovery and is back on the fells soon."

What is liver cancer? Expert explains causes, symptoms and how to treat it

The number of liver cancer cases is expected to double by 2050, with rising obesity rates partly responsible, researchers have warned. Experts predict that the share of liver cancer cases linked to obesity will grow from 5 per cent to 11 per cent, urging stronger efforts to prevent avoidable cases. New projections from a Lancet Commission on Liver Cancer report estimate that global liver cancer cases will increase from 0.87 million in 2022 to 1.52 million by 2050. Many adults remain unaware of the risk factors for liver cancer, so we spoke to a medical adviser at the British Liver Trust, Anya Adair, who is also a consultant transplant and hepatobiliary surgeon at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. She shared some key insights into the main causes, symptoms and treatments of this serious disease. What is liver cancer and what causes it? 'Cancer that develops within the liver is primary liver cancer, but when cancers arise from somewhere else in the body and then spread to the liver, that is secondary cancer,' explains Adair. How serious liver cancer is depends on the patient's general health, where the cancer is in the liver, how big it is, if it has spread and if it's primary or secondary cancer. according to the NHS website. 'Liver cancer can develop within the liver tissue, which is called primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC),' explains Adair. HCC occurs when cells called hepatocytes start to multiply and grow more than they should, according to the Liver Cancer Trust, part of the British Liver Trust. 'However, cancer can also develop within the bile duct systems in the liver, which is called cholangiocarcinoma,' adds Adair. Around three out of four cancers that start in the liver are HCC, according to the Liver Cancer Trust, which typically develops in livers that are already scarred and damaged, a condition known as cirrhosis. 'You could have a scarred cirrhotic liver due to alcohol consumption, but it can also be because of MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease), previous known as Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease,' highlights Adair. Both autoimmune hepatitis and primary biliary cholangitis (both of which are autoimmune liver diseases) can also lead to a scarred cirrhotic liver if left untreated, she adds. What are some common symptoms? 'The problem with HCC is that it often doesn't present with any symptoms at all,' says Adair. 'So, it is usually found incidentally on a scan that has been done for something else if the person didn't know that they had a scarred liver.' HCC is also sometimes flagged up during a routine ultrasound that people who know they have a cirrhotic liver tend to have. 'Sometimes people with a cirrhotic liver are in surveillance and have ultrasounds every six months because the risk is higher, and during the scan a new swelling or shadow in the liver is picked up,' notes Adair. Although liver cancer is often silent in the beginning stages, Adair highlights that once it becomes more advanced, patients may start to develop symptoms such as jaundice, unexplained weight loss, tiredness and/or nausea. 'Anyone who develops jaundice should seek urgent medical attention, and unexplained weight loss in particular is also an alarm bell,' says Adair. How is it diagnosed? 'Liver cancer is usually spotted on an ultrasound initially, which is then followed by CT and MRI scans,' says Adair. 'So, it's usually a radiological diagnosis, and in some situations you need a biopsy for confirmation.' What are the treatment options? 'There are a lot of treatment options depending on how bad your liver disease is, how many cancers in the liver you have, how big they are and what your general fitness is,' explains Adair. There are several curative options, including surgery. 'If the cancer is picked up relatively early, and you are within transplant criteria, then a liver transplant is a curative option,' says Adair. 'If the liver is working well and there is only one area of cancer, then patients could think about having a liver resection, where you take part of the liver away. 'In addition, patients who have a single lesion that is below three centimetres can opt for ablation.' This minimally invasive procedure uses heat or extreme cold to destroy the targeted tissue, according Liver Cancer UK. There are also other treatment options that help hold the liver cancer tumour at bay or are a bridge to further treatment, such as chemoembolisation (combining chemotherapy with a method to block blood flow to the tumour) or local radiation.
