Brent Rooker delivers go-ahead hit as Athletics beat Orioles 5-4
Jacob Wilson had three hits and two RBIs, Brent Rooker drove in the tiebreaking run and the Athletics beat the Baltimore Orioles 5-4 on Friday night.
Mason Miller got the last five outs to get his 13th save as the Athletics got back-to-back wins for the first time since May 4-5 and ended the Orioles' six-game win streak.
Miller struck out two after coming in with one out and the bases loaded in the eighth inning. He then struck out Adley Rutschman looking on three pitches to begin the ninth before walking Ramón Laureano on a full count. Ryan O'Hearn flied out to left and Ramón Urías hit a comebacker to end it.
Dylan Carlson hit his third homer — a two-run shot in the second off JP Sears to give Baltimore the lead. Jackson Holliday doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ramón Laureano to make it 3-0 in the third.
The Athletics scored four runs to take the lead in the bottom of the third against Dean Kremer. Lawrence Butler drove in the first run with his 20th double, Wilson had a two-run single, and Tyler Soderstrom put the A's ahead with a run-scoring grounder.
Holliday hit his eighth homer — a solo shot leading off the fifth — to tie it. He finished a triple shy of the cycle.
Butler, Wilson and Rooker had three straight singles in the bottom of the fifth to give the Athletics a 5-4 lead.
Sears (5-5) gave up four runs and four hits in five innings.
Kremer (5-6) allowed five runs and eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Denzel Clarke left the game after he crashed into the wall in center running full speed to make a catch in the fifth for the A's.

The photo posted on X had the comments disabled. In response to Gaines' criticism of the post, Biles posted a message calling Gaines "truly sick" over her stance on trans athletes. She even launched a personal attack at Gaines. "You're truly sick, all of this campaigning because you lost a race. Straight up sore loser," Biles said, referencing Gaines competing against former UPenn swimmer Lia Thomas at the 2022 NCAA championships. "You should be uplifting the trans community and perhaps finding a way to make sports inclusive OR creating a new avenue where trans feel safe in sports. Maybe a transgender category IN ALL sports!! But instead… You bully them… One things for sure is no one in sports is safe with you around!!!!!" The post went viral on social media, with Biles adding in another post, "bully someone your own size, which would ironically be a male." But Biles, the most decorated gymnast in history – a feat she accomplished at the Paris Olympics, faced fierce backlash for her comments on social media. Many on social media also pointed out Biles' call for open categories in all sports. In 2022, World Aquatics, the international governing body for swimming, updated its eligibility policy to effectively ban transgender athletes from competing in women's events. The following year, the organization launched and debuted an open category at the World Aquatics Swimming World Cup in Berlin. The organization later confirmed that upon the close of registration, no entries had been received for the open category. Biles is an 11-time Olympic medalist. She holds 30 world championship medals, including a record 23 gold. She has not responded on social media following her initial posts aimed at Gaines. Tyler Loop is already putting his big leg on display as he works to replace Justin Tucker Ravens rookie kicker Tyler Loop has been booming 60 yard kicks and is having no problem adjusting to the NFL, per head coach John Harbaugh. Justin Tucker has an uncertain future in the NFL, and with his play diminishing, Baltimore decided to move on. The Ravens drafted a kicker for the first time in their 30-year history. Baltimore selected Arizona kicker Tyler Loop in the 6th round (No. 186 overall). Through three weeks of OTAs, Loop has looked like the best kicker on the roster, and he's left head coach John Harbaugh impressed by his big leg and efficiency. Loop went 6-9 on kicks from 50+ yards last season for the Wildcats and has arguably the biggest leg in this year's class, making a school record 62-yard field goal at Arizona and converting 63 of 80 career field goal attempts (83.8%). Tucker, 35, is a seven-time Pro Bowl player and the most accurate kicker in NFL history. He was the longest-tenured player on the Ravens and the last remaining player from their 2012 Super Bowl championship team.

Lawrence valedictorian and athlete credits the Boys and Girls Club for his success
This week's BZ MVP of the Week is the brother of an MVP from last year and like him, he credits the Boys and Girls Club in Lawrence, Massachusetts for his success. Argenis Luciano has always followed in the footsteps of his brother, Obbie. When he was 7 years old, he followed him to the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club. Class of 2025's valedictorian "He was my inspiration. I've always seen him doing his thing on the basketball court," said Luciano. "And that led me to try basketball and then to go on to be in the Homework Room a lot and that's where I met Jonathan Glesmann." Luciano said the Homework Room is what made him who he is. "The constant focus on homework and education is in this room," said Glesmann, a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club. "Us volunteers, we stress that too. We hold education on a very high level. And it'll solve a lot of problems, not only personally, but in the world." Luciano's education path led him to become valedictorian of Lawrence High School's Class of 2025. "It was a lot of hardship and a lot of sacrifice that I had to make. But with my great support system, I was able to go through with it," said Luciano. When he was asked what made him get better with academics, he said, "Failing. I learned that failure is a step to grow." Luciano said his inspiration is his family, brothers Obbie and Delvis Roman and his sister Clairis. His father Nairobert owns a barbershop and his mother Rosa works two jobs. "Seeing my mom struggle with bills, you know, there's just financial pressures that are overwhelming on her," said Luciano. "So I try to help out as much as I can. They mean everything to me. I mean, that's my family. I love them. So everything I do is in honor of them." Heading to Brown on track and field scholarship Luciano is on the track and field team, where he throws discus. Last week, he captured the Division I State Championship at Tufts University. Quite a feat considering he didn't pick up a discus until his freshman year, at the urging of his health teacher. "It's about discipline, it's about repetition, it's about being coachable," said Lawrence High School teacher and throwing coach Angel Pabon. "And he's very coachable and he listens very well." When asked how far he thinks Luciano can go in life, Pabon said, "I don't think there's a limit for him." "His leadership ability is second to none. He's been incredible in bringing along our younger athletes," said Lawrence High School track and field head coach Jonathan Manuel Speing. "And just, as a competitor, I've never met anybody more competitive than him." Luciano has also been named the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club's Youth of the Year. After watching his brother Obbie earn a scholarship to Yale University last year, he will be heading to Brown University in the fall on a track and field scholarship. "They are such great role models for the rest of the kids here at the club, right?" said Markus Fischer, the executive director of the Lawrence Boys and Girls Club. "It shows them that this can be done. If you're applying yourself, you're working hard, staying focused. You can accomplish things."
