
Middle East crisis could pose an obstacle to India-Middle East-Europe corridor: MEA official
The ongoing crisis in the Middle East could pose an obstacle to the completion of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), which was announced on the sidelines of the G20 summit hosted by India in 2023, according to a senior official in the Ministry of External Affairs.
'It's not like we have gone back to square one, but I think the crisis in the Middle East could become a problem or obstacle for the IMEC,' Dammu Ravi, Secretary, Economic Relations, in the Ministry of External Affairs said while speaking at a conference on IMEC hosted by the Chintan Research Foundation on Wednesday (June 4, 2025).
IMEC is a proposed corridor spanning ship, ship-rail, and road networks to connect India to the Gulf region and the Gulf region to Europe.
Mr. Ravi acknowledged that any mega project of this magnitude would face challenges, but added that the two main issues are going to be competition from other similar projects such as the China-led Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and the homogenisation of systems across the partner countries.
'In my view, the biggest challenge that could come in the way, apart from geopolitical issues and conflicts, is harmonisation,' he said. 'The ability to harmonise across platforms, across countries, is important. Harmonisation in terms of regulatory standards, both your technical and phytosanitary regulations, your transportation networks, taxation systems. That will take work.'
Mr. Ravi also called for the setting up of a Secretariat or headquarters for the IMEC, which could act as a coordinating mechanism, 'without which a very good idea will disappear in no time'.
Speaking at the same conference, Vice Admiral Anil Chawla (Retd.), a Distinguished Fellow at the Council for Strategic and Defence Research (CSDR) pointed out that the IMEC would reduce the transit time of cargo from Mumbai to Piraeus in Greece by around three days.
However, he added that this is likely to be offset by customs clearances and regulatory processes at the transit points in Mumbai, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel, and Greece.
An increase in efficiency from IMEC, he said in a presentation, was not 'readily apparent'.'IMEC's advantage is that it would bypass the existing chokepoints of the Straits of Bab el Mandeb and the Suez Canal,' Mr. Chawla said. 'However, there is an increased risk of choke points over land as rail lines can be easily sabotaged by non-state actors in the region.'

Andhra Pradesh raises maximum working hours from 9 to 10 to boost investment
The Andhra Pradesh government, led by the TDP-NDA alliance, has increased daily working hours from nine to ten to attract investors and ease business regulations. Remove Ads The TDP-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh has decided to raise the maximum working hours from nine to 10 per day as part of ease of doing business and attracting Information and Public Relations (I&PR) Minister K Parthasarathy said that it has been decided to amend labour laws to make them 'favourable' to workers and state secretary K Ramakrishna criticised the move and said NDA governments at the Centre and state are pursuing 'anti worker' policies."Relevant sections of laws which allow maximum nine hours of work a day has now been raised to 10 hours per day. Under Section 55 there used to be one hour rest for five hours (work) now that has been changed to six hours," said Parthasarathy recently, elaborating on the decisions made by the cabinet to amend labour Parthasarathy noted that overtime was allowed only up to 75 hours which now has been extended up to 144 hours per quarter."Because of this (amendments to labour laws), investors in factories will (come to our state). These labour rules will be favourable for labourers and they will come to invest more. Globalisation is happening in every state. These amendments were brought to implement global rules," said the minister observed that the cabinet has also relaxed night shift rules to enable more women to work in the night to the I&PR Minister, women were not allowed to work in the night shifts earlier but now they can work with safeguards such as consent, transport facility, security and said the workplace of women during night shifts should be fully illuminated."When you work extra, income will increase. By these rules women can work in the formal sector. They empower women economically and promote gender inclusion and industrial growth. Also contribute to women's empowerment," he K Ramakrishna, State Secretary of CPI, opposed the NDA alliance government's stand on labour laws amendments. He alleged that the Central and state governments are working against the interests of workers."For the past 11 years, the Modi government has repeatedly taken measures that infringe upon workers' rights in India," Ramakrishan told PTI on oppose these rules, he said trade unions have decided to protest on July 9 all over India, adding that all sections will participate in this protest he observed that the NDA governments both at the Centre and in the state are pursuing 'anti-worker policies'.

Speaking at delegation-level talks, Jaishankar said India practised a policy of zero tolerance against terrorism and expected partners to understand it. 'We will never countenance perpetrators of evil being put at par with their victims," he said. Jaishankar also addressed the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), calling it a 'milestone", which will propel two-way trade between the countries and have a positive effect on other strategic aspects of bilateral ties. 'It will also contribute to the strengthening of supply and value chains," he said, while also highlighting other avenues of India-UK cooperation. Lammy held wide-ranging talks with Jaishankar, and met PM Modi. The British foreign secretary will also meet Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal. Lammy's visit to New Delhi comes over a month after the two countries finalised an ambitious free trade agreement (FTA). It is learnt that his visit is also expected to focus on preparing the ground for a possible trip to New Delhi by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. India-UK FTA The historic announcement regarding the conclusion of talks on the free trade agreement (FTA) was made by PM Modi and his British counterpart Keir Starmer in May. India and the UK sealed the deal along with a double contribution convention. Modi said the 'historic milestone" will catalyse trade, investment, growth and job creation in both economies. An Indian government press release said that India stands to gain from the trade pact as the UK agreed to scrap tariffs on nearly 99% of tariff lines, essentially covering all trade by value. The agreement is also set to give a big push to India's manufacturing, the press release said, with labour and tech-heavy sectors expected to see an uptick. Key exports like textiles, leather, marine products, gems and jewellery, footwear, toys, sports goods, auto parts, and organic chemicals will now have an edge in the UK market, levelling the field against global competition. Bilateral trade between India and the United Kingdom rose to USD 21.34 billion in 2023-24, up from USD 20.36 billion the previous year. Currently, goods imported from India into the UK attract an average tariff of 4.2 per cent. (With input from agencies)
