[SINGAPORE] Hotel101 Global, the first Filipino-owned company to list on the Nasdaq stock exchange , on Wednesday (Aug 20) entered into binding agreements with Cambodian real estate developer Canopy Sands Development to build two hotels in the country.
'(This marks) a pivotal step in Hotel101 Global's long-term vision to operate one million hotel rooms across 100 countries', said the proptech hospitality platform and its parent DoubleDragon – whose chairpersons Tony Tan and Edgar Sia are the respective founders of two of the Philippines' largest fast-food chains, Jollibee and Mang Inasal.
The companies noted that the move is part of Hotel101's global expansion strategy, with Cambodia as the sixth country that the group has entered – after the Philippines, Japan, Spain, the US and Saudi Arabia.
'Cambodia is seen as a lucrative market for Hotel101 as the country was reported to have received a total of over 6.7 million international visitors in 2024. (This) is expected to further grow with the upcoming opening on Sep 9 of (the) new Techno International Airport in Phnom Penh,' the companies said.
The hotels will be located in Phnom Penh, Cambodia's capital and commercial hub, and Sihanoukville, a coastal town and bourgeoning financial area.
They are anticipated to be among the largest hotels in Cambodia by number of rooms upon completion and are expected to generate US$109.6 million in sales revenue once they are fully sold, Hotel101 and DoubleDragon said.

Young Philippine workforce seen ‘ageing faster' than expected

August 20, 2025 MANILA – The Philippines will remain a relatively young nation over the next three decades, but its population is set to age faster than expected as declining fertility—influenced by rising living costs and more women entering the workforce—weighs on family formation. This points to 'emerging chinks' in the country's population armor, UK-based Pantheon Macroeconomics said in a note to clients, adding that the gains from the so-called demographic dividend 'won't be as big as previously thought.' Pantheon, citing United Nations projections, said the Philippines' working-age population was now expected to peak in 2053—24 years earlier than a prior estimate of 2077. The shift comes as the fertility rate slips below the replacement level of 2.1 births per woman, dropping to 1.9 in 2022 from 2.7 in 2017, a decline that may have been accelerated by the pandemic. Miguel Chanco, chief emerging Asia economist at Pantheon, said the drop reflects both 'positive long-term changes' and 'negative economic reasons.' Labor-force participation The former includes higher female labor-force participation and wider access to contraception and family planning, albeit from a low base. The latter, he said, stem from rising living costs since 2022 and the pandemic's heavy hit to household balance sheets, which many families are still struggling to recover from. 'What I found the most interesting about the Philippines' recent demographic trends is the rapid drop in fertility rates over the past ten years or so, aligning the country more with the rates of its peers,' Chanco said in an interview. 'For a start, a few members of the Asean four—Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam—are greying more rapidly than previously expected,' he added. A declining fertility rate could complicate the Marcos administration's Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028, which counts on the country's legion of young workers to help boost growth prospects for the next several decades. Overpopulation Despite the trend, Chanco said the Philippines isn't at risk of aging too quickly. A bigger challenge, he noted, is still overpopulation, which is straining public resources and fueling fierce competition for scarce quality jobs. That, in turn, is driving an acute 'brain drain' of skilled Filipino workers that could undermine human capital, innovation and long-term growth. 'There's a reason why the country remains a huge exporter of manpower, for instance,' Chanco said. 'There simply isn't enough quality jobs domestically, so brain drain remains a big issue.'

Thailand turning to Sri Lankan workers to cope with Cambodian exodus, official says, Asia News

BANGKOK — Thailand's cabinet has approved the hiring of 10,000 Sri Lankan workers as it tries to address a labour shortage caused by Cambodian workers returning home in the wake of a deadly border conflict between the two countries, a Thai senior official said on Tuesday (Aug 19). Thailand's ageing population and shrinking workforce has forced it to rely on at least three million registered foreign labourers across the agriculture, construction, and manufacturing sectors, data from the International Labour Organisation showed. More than 30,000 workers from Sri Lanka have already registered and 10,000 will be sent to Thailand in the first stage, Labour Minister Pongkawin Jungrungruangkit told reporters, adding that it would also allow workers from Nepal, Bangladesh, Indonesia, and the Philippines to apply. A long border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia last month boiled over into the worst fighting in decades, with at least 43 people killed and over 300,000 displaced on both sides of the border. The two Southeast Asian nations have now agreed a fragile ceasefire agreement. Before the conflict began, over 520,000 Cambodians worked in Thailand, accounting for 12 per cent of the country's foreign workforce, according to official data. About 400,000 Cambodians working in Thailand have left the country during the fighting, according to the Cambodian government. Sri Lanka, which has emerged as a key source of replacement labour, saw a record 314,786 citizens leave for overseas employment in 2024, official data showed, with economic hardship pushing many to look for work overseas. The Middle East was the primary destination, and many also sought jobs in South Korea and Japan. Sri Lankan migrant workers are the largest source of foreign exchange for the South Asian island nation. [[nid:721280]]
