Advanced tech enhances Hajj crowd management

Arab News05-06-2025
ARAFAT: The Royal Commission for Makkah City and Holy Sites, in cooperation with King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology, is using high-resolution satellite imagery, geospatial artificial intelligence and real-time data during the Hajj season.
These tools help monitor and analyze human and vehicular movement to enhance crowd management efficiency, with the analysis covering entry points to Makkah to observe vehicle flow and peak times.
They also track crowd density around the Grand Mosque and analyze pilgrimage routes to predict mobility patterns and congestion, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Thursday.
The technology supports immediate decision-making by providing accurate data and improving crowd distribution. It also ensures safe mobility and enhances coordination among operational teams on the ground.
The collaboration presents an advanced model for using geospatial technologies, helping improve safety and increase field operation efficiency during Hajj.

KAUST authors new study on land degradation

RIYADH: A recent study by King Abdullah University of Science and Technology designed a new blueprint to reduce the impact of land degradation worldwide. The Saudi university is aiming to reverse the growing threat of land degradation, and improve food and water security, social stability, and biodiversity. The study was published in the international multidisciplinary science journal Nature, and puts forward a number of solutions to reverse the trajectory of land degradation by 2050. One of the recommended methods involves increasing production and consumption of seafood in order to reduce the pressure that agriculture places on land. Another is to lower food waste by 75 percent — with the study noting that one-third of food produced is wasted at a cost of more than $1 trillion annually. Finally, the study suggests restoring 50 percent of degraded land through sustainable management practices. KAUST reported that food production is using up to 34 percent of the planet's ice-free land, a number that could increase to 42 percent by 2050 if current situation continues. Scientists proposed revising economic incentives, increasing food donations, and promoting smaller restaurant portions to preserve up to 13.4 million sq. km of land. 'Saudi Arabia is already doing a lot in improving food waste and looking at land restoration, but can still benefit a lot from this if policymakers implement a few of these key recommendations,' Fernando Maestre, professor of environmental science and engineering at KAUST, told Arab News. 'These include promoting smaller restaurant meals, requiring supermarkets and hotels to donate or discount near-expiry food, requiring companies to publish waste-reduction plans, investing in cold-chain and community redistribution, and expanding sustainable seafood/seaweed options that deliver nutrition with very low land and water use. 'Cutting food waste with measures like these would ease pressure on the Kingdom's scarce water resources and cut emissions, while improving food security and saving money,' Maestre added. The study also emphasized the importance of sustainable seafood production, elaborating on how specific aquaculture policies could have the potential to lower the pressure on land resources and help reduce deforestation. 'By transforming food systems, restoring degraded land, harnessing the potential of sustainable seafood, and fostering cooperation across nations and sectors, we can 'bend the curve' and reverse land degradation,' Maestre said. The study was carried out in collaboration with Aeon Collective and the UN Convention to Combat Desertification.

UAE air traffic climbs 6.2% as airports handle 75.4m passengers in H1

ABU DHABI: The UAE's civil aviation sector posted robust growth in the first half of 2025, with passenger traffic climbing 5 percent to 75.4 million, up from 71.7 million a year earlier, according to the Emirates News Agency or WAM. January was the busiest month, handling more than 13.7 million travelers across the nation's airports. The surge in passenger and cargo activity reflects a broader global rebound in aviation, as Middle Eastern carriers leverage their strategic location to capture long-haul transit traffic between Asia, Europe, and the Americas. Air traffic movements increased 6.2 percent to 531,000 operations in the first six months, compared to nearly 500,000 in the same period of 2024. Riyadh, Jeddah, Kuwait, Mumbai, and Bahrain ranked among the top five most active routes. Cargo volumes also strengthened, rising 4.74 percent to more than 2.2 million tonnes. National carriers handled 67 percent of total freight, underscoring the UAE's dominance in regional logistics. The expansion of UAE-based airlines — with 15 new destinations launched across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East — further fueled the sector's momentum. Abdullah bin Touq Al-Marri, minister of economy and chairman of the General Civil Aviation Authority, said the UAE is reinforcing its international and regional aviation standing through 'record-breaking growth.' 'This growth stems from innovative national strategies that have elevated our competitiveness and leadership in a vital sector that now plays a central role in economic development, trade, tourism, investment, and job creation across aviation-linked industries,' Al-Marri said, reported WAM. He added: 'The performance indicators for the first half of 2025 demonstrate the sector's resilience and sustainability, as well as the competitiveness of our airports, national carriers, and air traffic management. Aviation serves as a critical bridge connecting the UAE to the world and is a key enabler of our long-term economic goals.' Al-Marri noted that the UAE would continue expanding its air connectivity through advanced legislation, open-market policies, and infrastructure development. Saif Mohammed Al-Suwaidi, director general of the General Civil Aviation Authority, said the aviation sector is on a steady growth trajectory. 'These positive indicators reflect the sector's strong infrastructure and the unified efforts of all partners, from airport operators and airlines to air traffic controllers,' Al-Suwaidi said. He expressed pride in the consistent growth in passenger and cargo volumes, citing ambitious development projects aimed at supporting this expansion. The current combined capacity of the UAE's airports now exceeds 160 million passengers annually. Al-Suwaidi reaffirmed confidence in the sector's ability to sustain its pivotal role in boosting the national economy, driving tourism and trade, and strengthening the UAE's role as a key regional and global air transport hub. The new routes include cities in Russia, the Czech Republic, and Poland, as well as Armenia, Kazakhstan, Vietnam, and Cambodia, among others. These additions complement the existing network, bolstering the country's status as a global aviation hub.
