Ernakulam records six leptospirosis deaths in three weeks
Ernakulam has recorded six deaths due to leptospirosis over the past three weeks. The district has reported over 35 suspected and confirmed cases of the disease in this period. Those who succumbed to leptospirosis include a 58-year-old male of Ashokapuram, Aluva; a 33-year-old male of Mattancherry; a 37-year-old male, a native of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal; a 44-year-old female of Vazhakulam; a 33-year-old female of Kuttampuzha; and a 60-year-old male of Keezhillam, according to the statistics available with the Department of Health. Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, convener of the research cell of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), pointed out that the number of cases of leptospirosis will go up in the monsoon season compared to the dry months earlier in the year. 'This relatively serious disease is caused by bacteria found in the urine of animals such as rats, cattle and dogs. They enter the soil and find their way into the human body through tiny cracks and wounds in the soles of the feet. This is likely to happen in waterlogged areas, particularly among people who work in agriculture, gardening or cleaning,' he said. Dr. Jayadevan said that many deaths have occurred because the patient presented late or because treatment was not initiated early enough. A proportionate number of the infected will succumb to the disease owing to organ failure, and those are the deaths that we are actually seeing, he said. Spike in fever cases The district has reported about 12,900 fever cases since July 15. Over 500 influenza cases were also reported in the last two weeks, as per the Health department statistics. Two deaths due to hepatitis A were reported between July 15 and July 31. Those who succumbed to the disease include a 52-year-old male of Pathalam and a 38-year-old male of Avoli, Muvattupuzha. A 29-year-old male of Parakadavu died owing to Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) on July 26. A 56-year-old male of Nellikuzhi died due to dengue fever on July 18. An average of 37 influenza cases had been reported over the past two weeks. On July 29 and 30, the district recorded a total of 74 and 65 cases, respectively.

Maharashtra Government To Cancel Fake Birth Certificates Of Bangladeshi Migrants
Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will cancel the fake birth certificates issued to Bangladeshi nationals living illegally in the state by August 15, Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule said on Wednesday. As many as 42,000 such cases have been found but the actual number is greater, and it will be ascertained by the officials, he told reporters here. "By August 15, fake birth certificates given to Bangladeshis will be cancelled," the BJP leader said, adding that the copies of such certificates will have to be sent to the Department of Revenue and the Department of Health. Earlier, BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya had alleged that 3,997 birth certificates had been issued to Bangladeshis on the basis of forged documents, leading to the state government suspending two officials previously posted in Malegaon in Nashik district. On Tuesday, Bawankule held a meeting with the state chief secretary, which was attended by district collectors via video conference. Somaiya too attended the meeting, sources said. Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam had stated in March that in the last four years, the government has been cracking down on illegal Bangladeshi residents as never before. In 2021, 109 Bangladeshis residing illegally in the state were deported, followed by 77 in 2022 and 127 in 2023. In 2024, as many as 716 illegal Bangladeshi residents were arrested and 202 deported, he stated.

699 students get allotment orders during counselling for medical admissions
Counselling for admission to MBBS/BDS courses under special categories and 7.5% reservation for government school students was held on Wednesday, with 699 students receiving allotment orders. Handing over the allotment orders to the students, Health Minister Ma. Subramanian said there were a total of 494 MBBS seats and 119 BDS seats under the 7.5% reservation for government school students. Counselling was held for 613 MBBS/BDS seats under the category, and allotment orders were issued. Under the various special categories, 67 persons with benchmark disabilities, eight sportspersons, and 11 children of former servicemen received the allotment orders. In all, allotment orders were issued to 699 students, the Minister said. 'The State government bears the expenses — tuition fee, hostel fee and mess fee — of those admitted under the 7.5% reservation for government school students,' he added. Responding to a question on NEET repeaters and NEET exemption, the Minister said there were students who had attempted the test five or six times. This was why the State government was determined to secure an exemption from NEET, he added. While the State government also offered free coaching for NEET, the ultimate aim was to secure an exemption from it, the Minister said.
