Australia wheat harvest outlook improves after July rains

The Sun30-07-2025
MELBOURNE: Rainfall across Australia's grain-growing regions in July has improved the outlook for the nation's 2025 wheat harvest, with traders now forecasting around 33 million tons. The revised estimate was discussed at Wednesday's Australian Grains Industry Conference, where experts noted the precipitation could help Australia match or exceed last year's 34 million-ton production.
Benchmark Chicago wheat futures remain near 2020 lows due to ample global supply, and a large Australian crop would maintain downward pressure on prices. Early June forecasts from the agriculture ministry had projected just 30.6 million tons, but recent rains have transformed the outlook.
Mark Lewis, COO of Riordan Grains, observed that weather patterns have shifted favorably. 'It feels like the weather patterns have changed and spring looks a lot more positive than it did,' Lewis said. While some regions like South Australia and Victoria had dry starts, soil moisture levels have improved, with the weather bureau predicting above-average rainfall for most farming areas through October.
Industry consensus now points to stronger production. Cargill director Sam Napier told conference attendees the crop 'has to be bigger' than 33 million tons, a view supported by audience polling where over 50% expected final yields to exceed current projections. Analysts revised estimates to 31-34 million tons, with CBH's Paul Smith noting, 'The potential has improved...sentiment would definitely have been different in mid-May.'
Australia has recorded consistently large harvests this decade, with 2019-2024 production averaging 33.8 million tons annually - a 58% increase over the previous five-year average. The combination of favorable weather and advanced farm management continues to strengthen the country's position as a top wheat exporter. - Reuters

Europe on radar as AirAsia X to start KL-Istanbul direct service on Nov 14

PETALING JAYA: AirAsia X Bhd (AAX) will return to Europe for the first time in over a decade with the launch of a direct service between Kuala Lumpur and Istanbul, Turkiye, starting Nov 14. The new route, operated four times weekly on an Airbus A330-300, will connect Kuala Lumpur International Airport to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport. Speaking at the launch, AAX CEO Benyamin Ismail said Istanbul had 'always been a dream destination for many of our guests' and was a natural next step following the airline's expansion into Central Asia. 'Hot on the heels of our recent growth into Central Asia, this long-awaited route takes us one step closer to delivering longer connectivity across continents. As the only city in the world built on two continents, Istanbul perfectly captures our vision to bridge Asia and beyond through affordable, medium-haul travel,' he added. He said Turkiye is already one of Malaysians' favourite holiday destinations, with 22 weekly flights currently offered by other carriers. 'With us, it will be an added benefit because we will offer the cheapest fare,' he said, adding that the important thing is that they want to connect with people who have never flown before from Europe or Turkiye to Kuala Lumpur and onto their network of 130 destinations. He also pointed to untapped potential in Indonesia and the Philippines. Turkiye, ranked fourth in the world for most international visitors, is seen by AAX as a high-priority market. The airline plans to start with four flights a week and, if demand is strong, increase to daily within six to 12 months. 'This is our first European destination in this new phase. For 2026, we are looking at London, Azerbaijan, Russia, all very exciting markets,' said Benyamin. He acknowledged that the launch had been delayed due to Middle East airspace closures. 'We should have started earlier, but we held back. Now we see things are okay, so this is the best time,' he said. AAX has ordered Airbus A330XLRs for future medium-haul routes of five to eight hours, targeting destinations in Central Asia, India, smaller Australian cities and Japan. Turkey Ambassador to Malaysia Emir Salim Yüksel hailed the new route as a 'tangible step' in strengthening bilateral ties. 'We established diplomatic relations in 1964 and last year celebrated the 60th anniversary. This air link will not only boost tourism flows but also expand business links, foster industry collaboration and open new pathways for education, innovation and people-to-people engagement,' he said. Nearly 93,000 Malaysians visited Türkiye last year, with the figure expected to surpass 100,000 in 2025. To mark the milestone, AAX is offering promotional all-in one-way fares from RM499 for economy and RM3,999 for premium flatbed. The promotion runs until Aug 20 for travel between Nov 14, 2025 and Sept 14, 2026, bookable via or the AirAsia MOVE app. Passengers can also enjoy up to 45% off checked baggage.

Generational Wake-Up Call: Young Adults Buckle Under Credit Pressure

As Millennials and Gen Z face soaring interest rates, record balances, and delayed financial milestones, Consolidated Credit finds demand for counseling spikes. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., Aug. 12, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — As U.S. households confront the highest debt levels in history, nonprofit credit counseling agency Consolidated Credit is reporting a surge in demand for help. The economic story of 2025 so far has been one of pressure and strain: record-high credit card balances, a stubbornly high average APR over 24%, and growing consumer unease. According to the Federal Reserve, total U.S. consumer debt reached $18.2 trillion in Q1 2025, a new all-time high. And while inflation has cooled slightly, interest rates remain elevated, making it more expensive to carry and repay debt. The reactivation of federal student loan delinquency reporting has added another layer of stress for millions of borrowers. 'These numbers aren't just data points. They reflect real households trying to stay afloat,' said April Lewis-Parks, Consolidated Credit director of education and communications. 'We're seeing more people who were never in financial trouble before suddenly overwhelmed by rising interest costs and maxed-out cards.' Consolidated Credit saw double digit increases year-over-year in enrollments in its Debt Management Program (DMP) from January through June of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024. The average amount of debt enrolled in a DMP also rose. The data reveals alarming increases in average debt loads by generation year over year: Baby Boomers: 30% increase Gen X: 40% increase Millennials: 52% increase Gen Z: 70% increase 'Younger Americans are being hit hardest, and we are seeing an 18% increase of Gen Z and Millennials joining debt management programs year over year,' noted Lewis-Parks. 'They started their financial lives in a volatile economy, and many are juggling rent, student loans, and credit cards at rates over 24%. It's no wonder they're reaching out for help.' A recent delinquency breakdown from Consolidated Credit shows the emotional and practical burden of growing balances: 34.6% of clients are already behind on their bills 34.1% are 'juggling' payments to avoid falling behind Only 31.4% are not currently behind 'We're at a tipping point. More people are behind or juggling than those who are current. Without intervention, those balances will tip over into default,' continued Lewis-Parks. Policy and Pop Culture Meet Financial Reality From the White House to Wall Street, debt stress is driving policy discussions. Meanwhile, social media is flooded with budgeting advice, side hustle content, and debt-free journey stories. Lewis-Parks adds, 'It's clear Americans are hungry for financial guidance. We're here to meet that need with compassion, credibility, and a clear path forward.' About Consolidated Credit: Consolidated Credit is one of the nation's largest nonprofit credit counseling agencies. For over 30 years, they have helped more than 10 million people overcome credit card debt and achieve financial stability through education, personalized coaching, and proven debt management programs.
