Coimbatore Collector steps in to secure college admission for bereaved girl
COIMBATORE: Coimbatore District Collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar stepped in to help a girl to get an admission in a private college in Coimbatore on Thursday.
Natchatra (18) of Varapatti in Sultanpettai Union in Coimbatore district was unable to continue her higher education after completing Class 12 due to the recent demise of her father.
She even had to work in a mill along with her mother Jayanthi.
The collector came to know about the girl's situation on June 18 when he arrived to inspect developmental works at Kulathupalayam village near Varapatti.
Thereafter, he helped the girl to get an admission to the B.Sc Computer Science course at the KPR Arts and Science College, near Arasur, under the Kalloori Kanavu Scheme, an extension of Naan Muthalvan Scheme, to support the higher education of underprivileged students.
Under the scheme, no fee is collected from the students till completion of the course.
On Thursday, Natchatra and her mother met the collector and expressed their gratitude. The collector advised the girl to study well.

Coimbatore officials work for cent percent enrolment ratio in higher education
C oimbatore: The district administration is tracking down the status of students who cleared the Class XII board exam to ensure cent percent enrolment ratio in higher education. District collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar had convened a meeting with nodal officers in this regard on Friday. Pointing out that 114 officers were deployed to gather the enrolment status of students from all schools across the district, an official source said only 10,020 of the 10,301 students who cleared the Class XII board exam had applied for higher education. "All schools were earlier instructed to collect details about the higher education plans of students while issuing them transfer certificates. This helped us find that 281 students haven't applied for higher education," the source said. As a continuation of 'Kalloori Kanavu' career guidance programme, officers are now trying to track down these 281 students to know why they haven't applied for a higher education programme. A senior official with the school education department said there could be various reasons for not enrolling for higher education. More than 150 students attend in grievance redressal meeting in Coimbatore
COIMBATORE: More than 150 students, along with their parents, took part in a student grievance redressal meeting conducted at the Coimbatore district collectorate on Friday. As many as 55 petitions regarding bank loans, certificates, scholarships and NEET training programmes were represented during the meeting. District collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar convened the redressal meeting for students who cleared classes X, XI and XII board examinations. In his address, the collector said, 'This is aimed at achieving a 100% higher education enrollment rate. Earlier, career guidance programmes were organised during the month of May for those who have passed their Class XII exam. There are nearly 175 colleges in the district that cover all streams of arts, engineering, medical and law, but not many are aware of the details.' He said a handbook released during the 'Kalloori Kanavu' programme provided detailed information on colleges and courses available, duration of courses, eligibility, total number of seats and other significant details. 'The details are available in copy as well,' he said. The collector said not many students are aware of the Allied Health Science course available and that it has a lot of opportunities. However, to pursue that course, the students should have cleared a science major in Class XII board examination.
