Try it free WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — For the first time in three weeks, the Mets have won back-to-back games. All it took was a trip to the Little League World Series, an offensive outburst against Seattle's George Kirby and a solid start from Clay Holmes. Advertisement Losers of 14 of 17 heading into the game, the Mets remained a game ahead of Cincinnati for the third and final NL wild-card spot with the 7-3 victory at the Little League Classic at Bowman Field, capped by Mark Vientos' three-run, opposite-field homer in the fifth. Francisco Lindor had another multihit game with three more hits, and Francisco Alvarez had three hits before he was forced from the game after an apparent right wrist injury in the seventh. 6 Francisco Lindor reacts after hitting an RBI double during the Mets' Aug. 17 win against the Mariners. Holmes had completed four innings just once in his previous three starts and was coming off his worst outing of the season. But in his return to the ballpark where he blew another game on his way to losing his closing job with the Yankees last year, the right-hander rebounded. Advertisement His night got off to a shaky start when Holmes drilled Randy Arozarena with a 92 mph sinker with his first pitch of the game Sunday. He recovered to whiff the majors' home run leader, Cal Raleigh, then got Julio Rodríguez to hit into an inning-ending double play. Lindor, who had a fifth-straight multihit game, opened the bottom of the inning with a base hit to right but was picked off first. Advertisement The Mets took the lead with a three-run second with four straight hits to open the inning. It started with singles by Pete Alonso and Jeff McNeil before Alvarez followed with an RBI double to left-center that Rodríguez couldn't corral, scoring Alonso. 6 Mark Vientos celebrates after hitting a home run during the Mets' Aug. 17 win. A Vientos sacrifice fly made it 3-0 against Kirby, who'd allowed just two earned runs over 19 innings in his previous three starts. The Mariners got to Holmes and the Mets in the fourth thanks to another mistake by Lindor. CHECK OUT THE LATEST MLB STANDINGS AND METS STATS Advertisement After Rodríguez began the inning with a double, Holmes got Josh Naylor looking, and a Eugenio Suárez groundout moved Rodríguez to third. Jorge Polanco hit a soft liner up the middle, and Lindor, shaded that way, appeared to be in position to make an easy play, but he misjudged his leap and the ball went into center for a questionable run-scoring single to cut the Mets lead to 3-1. Dominic Canzone's single put runners on the corners, and J.P. Crawford walked to load the bases for Cole Young, who popped out to short to end the 31-pitch inning. 6 Clay Holmes throws a pitch during the Mets' Aug. 17 win against the Mariners. Vientos, who'd snapped a 1-for-11 rut with a sacrifice fly and a single, hit a three-run, two-out homer. Cedric Mullins, also slumping, doubled and scored when Lindor doubled to make it 7-1 to knock Kirby out of the game. Advertisement By that time, the Mets had a dozen hits. Gotham FC's unbeaten streak ends with crushing loss to Houston after lengthy weather delay
The push to secure an NWSL playoff berth will take a pause this week for the start of the CONCACAF W Champions Cup. Gotham FC will have to recover quickly for the start of that tournament title defense on Wednesday after they conceded an own goal early in the second half and the decisive tally in added time following a 2-hour weather delay for a crushing 2-1 loss Sunday to the Houston Dash in Harrison, N.J. 'Obviously, a difficult one to take,' Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amorós said after the end of his team's four-match unbeaten streak. 'The team did everything they needed to do to win the game apart from scoring goals. 'We dominated so much, had so many chances, but with one shot I think they were able to score two goals. It was difficult to take.' 6 Gotham FC reacts after allowing the game-winning goal during their Aug. 17 loss to Houston. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post 6 Juan Carlos Amorós reacts during Gotham FC's loss to Houston on Aug. 17. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Leading scorer Esther González found the back of the net in the first half for Gotham, who fell to 5-5-6 and missed an opportunity to pass Racing Louisville FC into the seventh of eight playoff positions in the league. It also marked the first of three home games in seven days for Gotham, who will play host to CF Monterrey Femenil at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island in group-stage play of the Champions Cup. Gotham won the inaugural tournament in 2024, defeating Tigres UANL, 1-0, in the final on a goal by González at Estadio Universitario in Mexico. 6 Esther González reacts after scoring during Gotham FC's Aug. 17 loss. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post 'Nobody likes to be on the back end of games like that,' midfielder Sarah Schupansky said of Sunday's loss. 'There were some very good moments, but it was an unfortunate way to end it. 'We do have another game coming up very quickly, so we can let this one sting for a little bit, but we definitely have to refocus as soon as possible and move on to the next.' 6 Esther González battles for possession during Gotham FC's loss to Houston on Aug. 17. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post This marked the first match between the teams since a scoreless draw March 26 in Houston, when Gotham defender and U.S. women's national team regular Tierna Davidson suffered a season-ending ACL tear in her left knee. USWNT standout Rose Lavelle rang a left-footed shot off the post in the eighth minute, and the rebound found its way to Esther's feet in the middle of the box. 6 Esther González reacts after scoring during Gotham FC's loss to Houston on Aug. 17. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post She slotted her league-high 11th goal of the season into the right corner for a 1-0 Gotham lead. That advantage carried into halftime, but the Dash evened the score in the 51st minute with an own goal that was put past goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger on a pass-back attempt by Gotham center back and national team veteran Emily Sonnett. The match was delayed for two hours and 18 minutes later in the second half due to lightning in the area, and neither side scored in regulation until Houston's Michelle Azolie dashed behind the defense on the right wing and blasted a shot beyond Berger's reach in the 93rd minute. 6 Rose Lavelle looks to pass the ball during Gotham FC's loss to Houston on Aug. 17. Corey Sipkin for the NY Post It appeared — and Amorós believed — that Azolie might have been offside on the play, but VAR upheld the goal. 'We're naturally super-disappointed,' center back Jess Carter said. 'We felt like we dominated the game, so to come away with a loss is really disappointing, and the way we lost in the last minute was really tough. … But it's one we've gotta get over really quick because we have another game in three days.'

Reports: Eagles obtain WR John Metchie III from Texans
The Philadelphia Eagles acquired receiver John Metchie III from the Houston Texans on Sunday, according to multiple reports. The Texans received tight end Harrison Bryant and a 2026 fifth-round pick in the deal. Houston also sent a sixth-round pick next season to the Eagles. Metchie, 25, had 40 receptions for 412 yards and one touchdown in 29 games with Houston over the past two seasons. He was a second-round pick in the 2022 draft but missed that season due to a battle with leukemia. Metchie played college football at Alabama and was a teammate with Philadelphia wideout DeVonta Smith with the Crimson Tide. Smith won the Heisman Trophy in 2020 when he and Metchie were the top two target on the school's national championship team. Bryant, 27, has caught 98 passes for 877 yards and 10 touchdowns in 78 games (33 starts) over five seasons for the Cleveland Browns (2020-23) and Las Vegas Raiders. His career high for catches was 31 in 2022. The Browns selected Bryant in the fourth round of the 2020 draft. --Field Level Media Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
