‘Distressing' situation: 800 children to be tested for infectious disease linked to alleged abuser at childcare centres; held working permit despite being reported
Australian authorities have advised infectious disease testing for around 800 children across four childcare centres where a man, now facing multiple charges including child rape, had been employed.
Joshua Dale Brown, 26, was arrested in May and is currently facing 70 charges. Police allege that he abused eight children, aged between five months and two years, between April 2022 and January 2023, according to the BBC.
Brown is scheduled to appear in Melbourne Magistrates' Court in September.
'We acknowledge how distressing this is for all families involved and everything possible is being done to provide the vital support now required,' a notice on the Victorian government website stated.
This follows an earlier advisory for around 1,200 children across 20 childcare centres to undergo testing as a precautionary measure.
On Tuesday, police identified four additional childcare centres where Brown had worked between January 2017 and May 2025. One previously listed centre was later removed after it was confirmed he had not worked there.
Authorities have assessed the potential risk of exposure to infectious diseases as 'considered low,' and added that 'testing results to date reaffirms this assessment.'

It remains unconfirmed whether Brown tested positive for any sexually transmitted infections. However, authorities said that due to the nature of the alleged offences, some children may still need to undergo screening.
At the time of his arrest, Brown held a valid Working with Children Check, a mandatory clearance for working in childcare, and was actively employed as a childcare worker, officials confirmed.
The case has triggered widespread outrage among parents, not only over the disturbing allegations but also over what many view as a systemic failure in the government's childcare screening process, according to the BBC.
Brown had reportedly retained his clearance despite being flagged to state authorities two years ago for concerning behaviour at the same childcare centre where the abuse allegedly occurred. Those earlier reports were not related to sexual misconduct, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
G8 Education, the childcare operator that employed Brown, has announced plans to fast-track the installation of security cameras across its network of more than 400 centres. The company also said it would launch an independent review into the allegations once police investigations and court proceedings are complete.

Custody row: SC directs Centre to issue lookout notice against 'missing' Russian wife, child; 'seize her passport'
NEW DEKHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed the central government to issue lookout notice for a Russian woman absconding with her child. The bench also directed the authorities to "seize her passport" and to inform the airports and immigration officials across the nation to ensures that she doesn't leave the country. The father, embroiled in a custody battle with his estranged Russian wife, has alleged that she violated court orders by withholding access to their minor child. He claimed he has had no knowledge of their whereabouts since July 7, despite repeatedly filing complaints, none of which, he said, prompted any action, according to PTI. "Father of the child apprehends that the petitioner has been facilitated to flee out of the jurisdiction of this court. She was statedly seen entering the Russian Embassy through a back door on July 4, 2025 along with a Russian diplomat, with whom she is alleged to have some relationship. It is further alleged that the police have failed to provide protection to the minor child, thereby defying the directions issued by this court," PTI reported the bench as saying. "Keeping in mind the comity, diplomatic relationship, and autonomy enjoyed on a reciprocal basis by different embassies, we are not issuing any directions in respect of the officers of the Russian Embassy in India. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo However, we do not hesitate to observe that if, on the basis of the police report, we find any diplomatic personnel attached or connected to the said embassy has prima facie committed an offence within the framework of the penal laws of this country, the law must take its own course," it added. The court urged the Russian embassy's top official to assist Indian authorities, including Delhi Police, in enforcing its orders. It criticized the woman's counsel for giving vague responses about her whereabouts, raising doubts about their credibility. The order was also directed to be shared with senior legal and police officials for compliance. "The officials at the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs, Union of India are also directed to communicate this order to all international airports and other ports within India, and the immigration authorities be intimated to ensure that neither the petitioner (woman) nor the minor child is permitted to leave the country," the order said. The hearing has been posted for July 18. The child's mother, a Russian citizen living in India since 2019 on an X-1 visa, had her visa extended periodically by the Supreme Court during ongoing proceedings. On May 22, the court also instructed Delhi Police to maintain discreet but effective surveillance on both parents' residences.

Murder convict shot dead in Patna hosp, killers flee freely
1 2 3 Patna: In a serious breach of security, five armed men entered a private hospital in Patna on Thursday morning and shot dead a murder convict who was receiving treatment while on parole. The assailants walked out of the facility unhindered, triggering panic among patients and staff. The deceased, Chandan Mishra (36), a convicted criminal from Buxar district, was undergoing treatment at a hospital on Bailey Road in the Shastri Nagar police station area. He had been serving a life sentence at Beur Central Jail for the 2011 murder of a businessman and had been released on parole on medical grounds. He had recently undergone liver surgery and was recovering at the time of the incident. The shooting took place around 7.15am. According to police, the attackers entered the hospital, located the victim's room on the second floor and opened fire. CCTV footage shows the five assailants brandishing pistols outside room number 209 before firing several rounds at close range. Their faces were clearly visible in the footage, which has since circulated widely on social media. Chandan was rushed for emergency treatment but succumbed to his injuries. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You To Read in 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "Chandan, a hardcore criminal, was shot multiple times by the assailants inside the hospital and died during treatment," said Patna senior superintendent of police (SSP) Kartikeya K Sharma. "Due to his criminal activities, he had earlier been shifted from Buxar Jail to Bhagalpur and was later moved to Beur Central Jail. He had been convicted for the murder of businessman Rajendra Kesari and was admitted to Paras HMRI on parole. " Sharma added that the killing appeared to be the result of gang rivalry. "There was a gang named Chandan-Sheru and the way the shots were fired suggests that the murder was committed by a rival group, possibly due to internal conflict or personal enmity," he said. "The CCTV footage has been shared with Buxar police to assist in identifying the shooters," the SSP added. Police sources said Chandan had earlier clashed with Sheru, a fellow inmate, during his time in Bhagalpur jail. Investigators believe the attackers fled towards Buxar after the shooting, based on CCTV footage from nearby areas. Patna SP (central) Diksha said Chandan had been shifted to a patient room after surgery. "At the time of the incident, two attendants were with him in the room. The assailants entered, opened the door and fired several rounds. After exiting the building, they got into a vehicle parked some distance from the hospital," she said. A case has been registered at Shastri Nagar police station and search operations are on. "Some people have been detained for questioning, though no arrests have been made so far," Diksha said. "The forensic science team and dog squad were called to the spot. The body has been sent for post-mortem," she added. Chandan had over 24 criminal cases registered against him, including those under the Arms Act. He was convicted of the 2011 murder of Rajendra Kesari, who was allegedly killed in Buxar after refusing to pay extortion money. Chandan had been granted a 15-day parole, which was due to end on July 18. According to officials, he was expected to be discharged from hospital on the day he was killed. The incident has triggered political criticism. Leader of opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav condemned the killing and criticised the Nitish Kumar-led govt. "Criminals entered the ICU of a hospital and shot a patient. Is no one safe in Bihar? Was it like this before 2005?" he wrote on social media. Responding to the remarks, Janata Dal (United) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar referred to an earlier incident. "Ask your mummy and daddy, Tejashwi ji. In June 1998, Brij Bihari Prasad, a minister in Rabri Devi's govt, was murdered inside IGIMS hospital. That was the real 'jungle raj'," he said.
