Spot the human! Bodies embedded in nature

The Guardian05-08-2025
Photographer Azita Gandjei's book Mythoscape explores themes of transformation and self-discovery, where the journey through nature mirrors an inward journey. Each image is presented as a threshold – where body and landscape meet, inner and outer worlds dissolve and transformation becomes possible. Mythoscape: A Different World is published by Daylight Books. All photographs: Azita Gandje
Gandjei says: 'Mythoscape explores the intimate relationship between humanity and nature, abstraction and meaning, light and insight. These liminal moments draw on the metaphorical language of Persian poetry, where nature mirrors emotional and spiritual states, and on Jungian psychology, particularly Nigredo : a descent into darkness as a path toward transformation'
'A body entangled with roots illustrates the intimate, inseparable relationship between humanity and the land. Here, the human form becomes both vessel and landscape, embodying the mythic concept that we are shaped by the Earth even as we shape it. The roots ties to ancestry, memory and belonging'
'This image draws on the Persian poetic language of exile and longing. The lone tree and human under a vast sky evoke a sense of isolation and quest. The stark landscape acts as both setting and symbol for spiritual pilgrimage – a journey through wilderness toward insight'
'Two bodies nestled into stone strata echo the motif of becoming one with the land. The swirling patterns of rocks mirror the emotional and spiritual turbulence within; the human figures suggests vulnerability, protection and rebirth – an ancient theme found in both Persian poetry and archetypal narratives'
In the current era of environmental crisis and spiritual disconnection, the book suggests a quiet return to our relationship with Earth, and to the ancient stories still alive in the land around us
'Water cascading through an abalone shell combines the elemental with the organic. In mythic language, the abalone shell is a vessel for transformation – a bridge between sea and land, body and spirit'
'The geological patterns in the rock parallel the lines and wrinkles of the human body, suggesting deep time and interconnectedness'
'The abstraction of the land reflects my influences from California's photographic tradition, using landscape to symbolise inner transformation'
'This closeup of hands grasping flesh suggests the tension between body and spirit, or the struggle inherent in transformation. It's a visual metaphor for the Nigredo : the discomfort, even pain, that precedes growth'
'The stark, abstract rendering of a human back is a nod to the work of Ruth Bernhard and Minor White, using light and shadow to reveal fragility and resilience. The spine, a literal and metaphorical axis, connects the body's interior world to the external landscape, suggesting both vulnerability and endurance'
'Water's movement over skin suggests purification, fluidity and the possibility of renewal. It's a visual metaphor for emotional states – grief, longing or joy – where water becomes a symbol for the mutable self'
'This image embodies the dissolution of boundaries, the return of the self to nature, and the cyclical renewal found at the water's edge. It's a living metaphor for transformation, belonging and the ancient dialogue between humanity and Earth'
'This image of a dark tunnel with a distant point of light is a metaphor for entering the depths of the self or the unconscious, a journey into darkness as a necessary stage for transformation and emergence'

Karren Brady, 56, shocks fans with with dramatic new appearance as she reveals latest beauty procedure and sparks weight loss jab concerns

has left her Instagram followers stunned after debuting a dramatic new appearance on Friday, with many claiming she looked 'unrecognisable'. The Apprentice star, 56, shared a glam snap as she posed in a chic white dress, displaying a slimmer frame and tauter visage. Karren cinched her tiny waist with a gold Chanel belt and sported a glam make-up palette with her caramel locks styled into loose curls. The Baroness also shared a photo of her recent skin-tightening procedure on her arms, however followers couldn't get over her head to toe transformation. Rushing to the comments, some fans were quick to praise Karren while others speculated she may have slimmed down as a result of weight loss jabs and was now 'too skinny' - despite the star previously denying she'd used the medication. They wrote: 'Yup - another Ozempic win': 'Cricky you look so skinny': 'Ozempic again': 'What have you done to yourself?: 'Nope sorry, the line of massively underweight has been crossed': 'For a second I really thought it was a different person': 'Weight loss jabs?'. Daily Mail have contacted Karren's reps for comment. Last year Lord Sugar 's adviser on the BBC TV show, exclusively to the Mail on Sunday, 'I have lost quite a bit,' as she showcased her slender frame while attending the Chain of Hope Gala on Friday held in London 's Natural History Museum. But she insists her willowy figure is not a result of taking the new weight loss drugs such as Ozempic but from 'bloody hard work.' The businesswoman says she doesn't know how much she has lost in total as 'I don't weigh myself' but thinks it is more than a stone and explained her recent weight loss was triggered by becoming a grandmother. 'I have been on a health kick, I became a grandma, and I wanted to be a fit healthy grandma, so I started eating healthy and exercising. 'I haven't joined (the Ozempic Club) - bloody hard work. It is okay losing it, it is keeping it off. 'I have lost quite a bit - I don't know though I don't weigh myself. I feel better for it. It is good because everything you put on fits.' In a revealing interview with the Radio Times when she first joined The Apprentice in 2010, she said: 'I worry I look posh and fat,' stood next to Lord Sugar, adding: 'I've spent 20 years battling my weight. Alan's so fit and slim I look huge in comparison.' But Karren who is the vice chairman of West Ham United, says Lord Sugar has been something of a heath kick buddy. 'He is great he is very fit. He and my husband cycle when we go away on holiday. He is super fit himself so if anyone is giving tips it is him to me. 'We went around Ital y which was lovely on Lord Sugar's boat. It was incredible. He is really lovely and has a wonderful family.' In April Karren 's daughter Sophia Peschisolido has revealed she's pregnant with her second child. The Apprentice star is set to become a grandmother once again, just a year after Sophia welcomed a son with her fiancé Frankie Makin. Sharing the news of her pregnancy on Instagram, Sophia shared a sweet video of herself and Frankie on the beach in Dubai in the son, with her bump on full display. She captioned the post: 'coming soon… baby #2.' Karren spoke about being a grandmother on The Apprentice You're Hired earlier this year. She said: 'He is the most beautiful little boy in the world and my daughter is a natural mother. 'Mother and baby are doing so well and I am so proud of her and her family and her husband and everyone is really well so it is great.'

Patricia Arquette, 56, shocks fans with hair transformation and mature new look

Legendary actress Patricia Arquette has shocked fans after debuting a bold new hairstyle. The Severance star, 57, turned heads at an event for SAG-AFTRA this week with a sleek honey blonde bob and bangs. The hairstyle featured chestnut highlights and stopped below her chin, perfectly framing her famous face. She went for a mature and conservative look for the event by pairing her new hairstyle with a long-sleeved shirt and a floor-length floral skirt. Arquette's transformation divided opinion online, with some praising the new look, while others felt it wasn't as flattering as her past hairstyles. 'She looks great but I think her longer hair was more flattering,' commented one. 'The haircut genuinely looks great,' wrote another. 'I love when she brings out the bob.' The Medium actress has often switched up her look over the years and has even rocked a bob on several occasions in the past. In AppleTV's Severance, Arquette has shoulder-length gray hair. Back in June, she looked almost unrecognizable after debuting a reddish-brown retro 'do. It marked a complete 180 change for the veteran star, who is largely known for her signature blonde hair. Her first role was in 1987's Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, and she went on to score an Academy Award in 2014 for Boyhood. Her other memorable roles include True Romance, Ed Wood, Lost Highway, and Medium. Earlier this year, Arquette revealed that she was looking for love online after quietly ending her longtime relationship with Eric White. While appearing on The Kelly Clarkson Show in January, the actress confirmed that she was single and using dating apps. When asked by Clarkson if she gets 'scared' of meeting up with her matches, the Oscar winner, who was previously married to Nicolas Cage and Thomas Jane, explained that the app she uses is one that 'kind of screens people.' Still, she admitted to feeling 'scared' about online dating and joked, at times, that Wikipedia has thrown a wrench into her search for her next relationship. Arquette went on to tell the host that her Wikipedia still said she was in a relationship with White, who she dated for nearly nine years between 2014 to 2023. 'Part of the problem for me is like, Wikipedia,' she said of her challenges with online dating. 'On there, I still have the same boyfriend I had a couple of years ago. And, I've been single for two years!' The Boyhood star mused that some of her matches thought that she was 'just running around town' since she never publicly announced her split from White. After hearing Arquette is looking for love, Clarkson turned to the cameras and said: 'So we're gonna get the word out now. She's single and mingling!' 'How is it on the apps?' Clarkson asked. 'Cause I'm single and I'm afraid.' 'I go very, very, slowly. I also do check up with people that know that person. And I go very slowly,' Arquette explained of her approach. The performer noted that she doesn't mind talking to someone 'for six months' before 'ever' having coffee with them. 'I believe in going very slow!' Arquette insisted.

I've lost 10 stone & am barely recognisable from my former self – my transformation's so insane people think it's AI

SHE'S lost a staggering 10 stone. And Karina's transformation is so impressive - leaving her completely unrecognisable - that people have even accused her of using AI to alter her appearance online. 8 8 8 8 She's been documenting her weight loss journey on her TikTok page, and is now no stranger to confidently flaunting her new figure in skintight ensembles. But it was a different story two years ago, when Karina was a whopping 10 stone (65kg) heavier. In a slideshow of pictures on TikTok, she showed how she looked before losing the weight - soundtracked by Michael Bublé's cover of Nina Simone's Feeling Good. In the final picture, at the culmination of the song, she showed how she looks now - with her figure perfectly highlighted by her bodycon dress. "The journey is worth it. This is your sign to start," she captioned the TikTok. Unsurprisingly, people were gobsmacked by Karina's new look, with some even alleging her glow up was AI. "Feelinggggg… AI," one laughed. "Convince me that's not AI!" another said. While a third wrote a simple "AI", to which Karina responded: "I'll take this as a compliment!" And others praised Karina for her dedication to her weight loss and transformation. "My jaw just dropped at your last picture," one wrote. "Wow girl! You owned it!" "This is a glow upp for real," another said. "You look like sofia vergara," a third added. "Biggest glow up," someone else said. "Wowwwww big respect, you look gorgeous," another wrote. In a separate video on TikTok, Karina responded to the AI allegations as she captioned it: "Am I AI? That's the question!" Alongside it, she shared shots of herself in 2019 and then this year. "You have nothing to prove to anyone but yourself; I'd take it as a compliment!" one person commented on that clip. "The best best beeeeest weight loss transformation I have seen and I have seen many," another praised. Karina went on to reveal that her new look was sparked by the breakdown of her marriage. "The breakup glow up needs to be studied," she wrote over the top of a TikTok. Before adding in the caption: "You don't realise how much a situation drains you until you're out of it." She added hashtags including "#divorce" and "#transformation". 8 8
