Suspects fatally wounded during N1 shootout between Winnie Mandela Drive and Rivonia Road
Eblockwatch's Andre Snyman commended officials after he quickly went to an active crime scene that was reported on the N1 North, between Winnie Mandela Drive and Rivonia Road on June 5.

He said the freeway was forced to be blocked off for law enforcement to attend the scene. This is after the officials apprehended a man who was allegedly driving a hijacked car on the highway, according to Snyman.
Snyman took a video, which he shared with Fourways Review, in which a helicopter can be seen parked on the road, along with police and security officers from Fidelity.

Snyman said he was informed by one of his eBlockwatch members that cops were flying over the area, so he immediately drove to the scene.
A man told him, in a voice note, which he shared with Fourways Review: 'I was driving on my way to a meeting when these cars overtook me, and then the next thing was a shootout. The man in the car, I think he was hijacked, went to hit my car, stopped in front of me, bailed out, and the cops came in and started shooting. I was the last car through, so they taped up the road.'
Snyman said: 'What else can I tell you? It's another day in South Africa. You know, the saddest thing is it's right next to St Peter's Girls College. I mean, the shootout and the bullets flying around, you can just think of how dangerous it must have been. This is the way we're going to take on our criminals.'
One of the security officers from Fidelity said to Snyman, in the video, that the car was occupied by people, but wasn't sure how many of them. It is not clear if there were fatalities or the extent of their injuries.
Captain Mavela Masondo confirmed that three house robbery suspects were fatally wounded during a shootout with the police on the N1 North, between Winnie Mandela and Rivonia off-ramps.

Suspected cop killer arrested in Bushbuckridge
A suspect linked to the murder of Constable Khulani Chabangu on May 30 has been arrested. The 25-year-old suspect was caught while loitering in the streets of Mkhuhlu in Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga, yesterday at around 16:30. Mpumalanga News reports that a team of investigators comprising the Hawks, National Crime Intelligence and the Calcutta Police Task Team effected the arrest. 'The suspect was found in possession of two cellphones. It is believed that one of the phones was stolen during the robbery and murder of the policeman,' says Mpumalanga Hawks spokesperson, Colonel Magonseni Nkosi. Further police investigations led the team to the house of a person of interest linked to the suspect. 'Upon seeing the police, the suspect fled into the residential area, managing to evade arrest,' says Nkosi. 'A search of the house was conducted during which a handgun with the serial numbers filed off and four live ammunition rounds were seized,' he adds. Chabangu (29), who was attached to Volksrust SAPS, was gunned down during a business robbery at a barbershop in Lillydale Trust under the Bushbuckridge municipality. The robbers entered the premises and demanded valuables from the victims, including cellphones and cash. They allegedly assaulted the victims and stripped the policeman of his clothes before taking his vehicle keys. As they left the barbershop, Chabangu pursued the robbers. They shot him in the upper body, killing him instantly. The Mpumalanga head of the Hawks, Major General Nico Gerber, vowed that the police would not rest until all involved in the killing of the officer were behind bars. 'We strongly believe that justice will be served for the family, community and the SAPS,' says Gerber. Chabangu's funeral takes place today in Bushbuckridge. Gauteng unveils high-tech, tamper-proof number plates
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has officially unveiled a new high-tech, tamper-proof provincial number plate system. The new intelligent number plate system is a secure, traceable and smart solution, incorporating tamper-evident decals, forensic QR codes and a fully digitised back-end portal. These technological enhancements are designed to combat vehicle theft, fraud and cloning, while improving road safety and empowering traffic law enforcement across the province. Speaking at the launch of the new plates on Thursday, Lesufi said the new system is a major step forward in the fight against criminality in the province. 'We are letting go of the old ways of fighting crime and introducing new ideas in this fight. With the help of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, we are now deploying a digital system that ensures we are able to account for every vehicle on our public roads. 'Those who are using fraudulent or duplicate number plates will have no space or time to drive on our roads,' he said at the launch held at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg. The province has launched a high-calibre 'weapon' in the fight against criminality and restoring order, he said. Rollout and combating crime The system will be piloted using g-Fleet vehicles affixed with the technologically advanced new number plates as part of the six-month stress testing project, before the provincial rollout. This system is set to drastically improve the credibility of number plates and enable license plate tracking within the value chain, from manufacturer to the vehicle owner. Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela highlighted that the launch represented a strategic provincial intervention to combat crime effectively and strengthen regulatory compliance. She added that this is an important pillar in the broader Provincial Integrated Crime Prevention Strategy. 'By partnering with law enforcement agencies, metro police departments and the private sector, we are enhancing vehicle identification and traceability. 'These smart number plates will significantly reduce vehicle cloning, trafficking of stolen vehicles, and the use of falsified plates in criminal activities. It is about disrupting criminal networks and improving road safety,' the MEC said. Meanwhile, as part of efforts to bolster traffic law enforcement, the Gauteng Provincial Government welcomed 96 officers from the Road Traffic Management Corporation. These additional 'boots on the ground' officers will enhance visibility and strengthen crime-fighting efforts in the province. Limpopo police bust R3m cross-border smuggling ring bound for Malawi
Limpopo police have dismantled a sophisticated cross-border smuggling syndicate operating between South Africa and Malawi, recovering stolen goods worth more than R3m. Polokwane Review reports that the breakthrough came in the early hours of Thursday morning when the Limpopo Anti-Smuggling Task Team, assisted by Tshimollo Security and Investigation and Shadow Secure Technology, intercepted a Scania truck pulling superlink trailers near the Polokwane weighbridge. The vehicle was travelling from Cape Town to Malawi via the Beitbridge Border Post. Following an 18-hour joint operation, officers recovered: Chopped parts of a Ford Ranger reported stolen in Nyanga, including the engine, dashboard, radiator, differential and steering wheel 60 disassembled motorcycles concealed in drums and containers, reported stolen at various Western Cape police stations, including Bellville, Mfuleni, Muizenberg, Nyanga, Milnerton, Sea Point and Athlone Stolen electronics, including plasma TVs, sound systems, solar tower batteries and cellphones Scania truck and trailers used in the smuggling operation. Four men, all foreign nationals aged between 37 and 50, were arrested and are expected to appear in the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of possession of suspected stolen goods. Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the arrests. 'This breakthrough represents a major victory against sophisticated criminal networks exploiting our borders. The collaboration between our task team and private partners shows the power of co-ordinated enforcement. We will continue to target these syndicates until they are dismantled completely.'
