PARIS (April 26): The 16-year-old accused of stabbing his classmates at a secondary school in western France, killing one student, has been described by those who knew him as a loner who admired Adolf Hitler, a public prosecutor said on Friday, German news agency7 (dpa) reported.
The knife attack took place on Thursday at a private Catholic school in the city of Nantes. A 16-year-old girl was killed by the suspect, and two other students, aged 15 and 16, were injured.
The teen did not give any reasons for his actions after his arrest on Thursday and has been temporarily admitted to a psychiatric ward, said Nantes public prosecutor Antoine Leroy.
He said the attacker attended classes as usual that morning before arming himself with a hunting knife and putting on a mask in a school bathroom around midday.
He then entered a classroom and fatally stabbed the girl – who was said to have been the only peer with whom he had a positive relationship — 57 times. He then went on to randomly attack other students in a separate classroom.
The rampage was stopped by a school IT technician who entered the room and struck the attacker with a chair, then held him at bay until police arrived.
Leroy said the teenager had no prior contact with law enforcement.
However, his mother had sought help earlier this year for his increasing social isolation, and he had attended six sessions at a counselling centre, he said.
School officials had also raised concerns over his admiration for Hitler, prompting a meeting with school management and his mother earlier this month.
On Friday, students and members of the public laid flowers outside the school in tribute to the slain girl. – Bernama-dpa crime France school attack stabbing

Psychiatric examination for foreign student who ran amok with knife

KAJANG: The university student who was charged with eight counts of attempted murder and causing injury to seven victims has been ordered to undergo psychiatric evaluation for one month. Sessions Court Judge Normastura Ayub and Magistrate Fatin Dayana Jalil made the ruling after allowing an application by Deputy Public Prosecutors Faelly Jeffrey Lanjungan and Siti Nur Alia Safri, who said the accused, Chinese national Liu Ting, 24, appeared confused and did not understand the charges read out. The court did not allow bail for the accused and ordered the woman to be sent to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta, Tanjung Rambutan in Perak for a psychiatric examination, in addition to setting case mention for Sept 19. Previously, Faelly did not offer bail because the charges against the accused were serious and non-bailable and also requested that the accused be sent to Hospital Bahagia for psychiatric evaluation. In the Sessions Court, Liu pled not guilty to three charges, namely intent to murder two men, aged 19 and 21, and causing injury to a 35-year-old woman, and if the accused had caused death, she would be guilty of murder. The charge is under Section 307 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine. If the act causes injury to any person, the offender will be sentenced to a maximum of 20 years in prison if convicted. She also pleaded not guilty to other two charges of causing grievous bodily harm to a 60-year-old woman by slashing her right arm with a knife and stabbing a 27-year-old man in the stomach. Both charges were filed under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 20 years and a fine or whipping, if convicted. Meanwhile, in the Magistrate's Court, the accused was also charged with causing injury to two men, aged 21 and 49, as well as a woman aged 53. Liu understood the three charges read out by the interpreter but remained silent. All three charges are under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of 10 years or a fine or whipping or any two of those punishments, if convicted. The eight offences were allegedly committed at Jalan Besar, at the Semenyih Persimpangan Metropoint junction and at a premises in the Metropoint Complex here, between 11.39am and noon on Aug 13. A video of the incident went viral on social media, showing a woman exiting her vehicle holding a knife after she was involved in an accident. Several injured motorcyclists could be seen and as bystanders tried to restrain the woman. – Bernama

Former US embassy guard in Norway on trial for spying for Russia, Iran

OSLO: A Norwegian who worked as a security guard for the US embassy in Oslo went on trial Wednesday, accused of sharing information with Russian and Iranian intelligence, media reported. The man, who is in his late 20s, is accused of having supplied information on embassy activities between March 2024 and November 20, the date of his arrest, according to the charge sheet. In return, he was paid in euros and bitcoin. He is accused of having supplied either the Russians or the Iranians – or both – with the contact details of diplomats, embassy staff and their families. He is also accused of having supplied the diplomatic licence-plate numbers of vehicles used by the embassy. The charge sheet also alleges he handed over floor plans of the embassy, security routines and a list of couriers Norway's intelligence service used. On the first day of his trial, prosecutors presented evidence in the form of an email to the Russian embassy where the man wrote that he had "information that could be useful to you," public broadcaster NRK reported. The trial is scheduled to take eight days. "He acknowledges the facts of the case but denies criminal liability. He is sorry for what he has done, but he is not a spy," Inger Zadig, the defendant's lawyer, told news agency NTB. If convicted of the charges, he could spend up to 21 years in jail, the prosecution service told AFP in July. Norway's intelligence service has regularly accused Russia, Iran and China as being the greatest threats to the country so far as spying is concerned.
