Tom Cruise's "Mission: Impossible - Final Reckoning" Dazzles Cannes

Yara Sameh
Tom Cruise said goodbye to the epic 'Mission: Impossible' franchise in electrifying fashion at the Cannes Film Festival, where 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' earned a five-minute ovation thanks in part to Cruise's commitment to putting breathless and death-defying practical stunts on the big screen.
The Cannes premiere was a massive event, with a 40-piece orchestra welcoming guests into the theater with the franchise's iconic theme before the screening.
The audience lapped up the film's special effects, but the long run-time left some theatergoers bleary-eyed and exhausted. In the final stretch of the film, featuring death-defying acrobatics from Cruise, a handful of attendees got up and fled the Palais.
Though Cruise's willingness to risk his life for 'Mission: Impossible' has been covered relentlessly, what the Cannes audience did not expect was how much he was willing to bare all.
The 62-year-old survived a three-minute knife fight sequence on a submarine wearing only skimpy boxer briefs. The same was true for part of the film's mind-blowing underwater sequence.
During the standing ovation, Cruise clutched his heart and nodded gratefully, with both he and director Christopher McQuarrie kissing and thanking guests Zoe Saldaña and Marco Perego-Saldaña. As the clapping continued, the camera panned to each member of the large cast, including Simon Pegg, Angela Bassett, and Hayley Atwell.
'This response is why we do it. You are why we do it. The big screen experience is why we do it,' McQuarrie said in a speech, which ended up being longer than the ovation itself. 'Thank you all for being here and for supporting us. I want to thank this extraordinary cast — when I tell you how extraordinary they are, it wasn't just showing up to work every day. This film was made during a pandemic and two industry strikes. These two films were made over a period of seven years with a lot of uncertainty, a lot of gaps in between their faith and their hard work, their dedication, their unquestioning devotion to this. This film would not be possible without the hard work of each and every one of these people standing up here. It's the most extraordinary cast in the world.'
Of Cruise, the director continued: 'As a kid, I didn't fit in, and a lot of my life was imaginative play. I got to grow up and have my very own action figure.'
McQuarrie then passed the mic to Cruise. 'To be here in Cannes and have these moments — I mean as a kid when we were growing up, I really can't even dream of something like this happening,' he said. 'I think McQ said it all, I'm just very grateful for 30 years to be able to entertain you with this franchise.'
Addressing McQuarrie, the movie star said, 'Grateful to you, my friend. Every step of the way what you've done and how you've expanded it — it just went beyond our expectations. I look forward to making a bunch of other kind of movies with you, I can't wait.'
Cruise and Paramount are surely hoping 'The Final Reckoning' follows in the footsteps of 'Top Gun: Maverick,' which dazzled Cannes in 2022 and earned a five-minute standing ovation on its way to $1.46 billion at the worldwide box office that summer.
The 'Top Gun' sequel's Cannes premiere was an extravaganza complete with eight fighter jets flying over the Palais as Cruise and the cast walked down the red carpet. Cruise was also awarded a surprise Honorary Palme d'Or before the screening.
Whether or not 'The Final Reckoning' can match the box office highs of 'Top Gun: Maverick' remains to be seen. Cruise's last 'Mission: Impossible' outing, 2023's 'Dead Reckoning Part One,' ended its run with a disappointing $571 million worldwide, a sharp decline from the $791 million that 2018's 'Fallout' earned. But one can never doubt Cruise's ability to deliver a blockbuster.
In addition to Cruise, 'The Final Reckoning' brings back franchise stalwarts like Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames. The cast also includes Hayley Atwell, Vanessa Kirby, Pom Klementieff, Henry Czerny, Angela Bassett, and Rolf Saxon, all of whom appeared in previous 'Mission: Impossible' installments.
Newcomers to the series include Janet McTeer, Hannah Waddingham, and Nick Offerman. The film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who helmed three previous 'Mission: Impossible' movies.
'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning' opens in theaters May 23 from Paramount Pictures.

Hideo Kojima's "Death Stranding" Gets an Anime Adaptation

Yara Sameh The Death Stranding universe is expanding. Hideo Kojima, the famed video game developer behind the "Metal Gear Solid" franchise, announced that his latest independent video game series is receiving an anime adaptation. In an interview with Vogue Japan , Kojima discussed the development of "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach", which continues the journey of Sam Porter Bridges, as played by The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus. While talking about his ambitions for the live-action film adaptation by A24, Kojima also confirmed that an anime version was also in production. "I am aiming to make Death Stranding in a way that can only be done as a film," he noted, "and that will win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival. In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation." In September 2024, Kojima confirmed that multiple projects based on the Death Stranding franchise were in the works, following the announcement of the live-action movie. "There are several Death Stranding adaptation projects currently underway, but there is a different story I've written that's intended for a movie," he said. "But I don't have the time to direct it, so I won't. Which is kind of like a test for the third phase. I'm in the second phase now and expanding the IP I made in all sorts of directions." In April 2025, Michael Sarnoski, the filmmaker behind "A Quiet Place: Day One", was confirmed as the official director for the live-action adaptation of "Death Stranding", which is being produced by Kojima Productions and indie film studio A24. Sarnoski is writing and directing the movie, which will reportedly delve deep into the "game's mysteries surrounding the 'Death Stranding' — a catastrophic series of events that blurred the boundaries between the worlds of the living and the dead." In the Vogue Japan interview, Kojima explained his vision for the live-action adaptation of "Death Stranding": "When it comes to film adaptations of games, there have been recent films like The Last of Us that keep the plot of the original intact, and films like The Super Mario Bros. Movie that are more like a service to game fans. Each of these works has its own merits, but as a film lover, I want to pursue expression as a film. I am aiming to make Death Stranding in a way that can only be done as a film, and that will win awards at the Cannes Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival." "Death Stranding 2: On the Beach" is scheduled for release on June 26, for the PlayStation 5. "Death Stranding Director's Cut" is currently available on PlayStation, PC and Xbox Series X/S. read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks

Official poster for AISHA CAN'T FLY AWAY reaches finals of 2nd Prix Luciole

The official poster for Morad Mostafa's AISHA CAN'T FLY AWAY — which held a resounding world premiere on May 20th at the 78th Cannes Film Festival and three more well-watched screenings throughout the event — was one of 22 entries that reached the finals of the second edition of Cannes' first independent award celebrating the art of film posters: The Prix Luciole. Designed by Abanoub Shenouda and Maher Diab, the poster depicts the film's protagonist, Aisha, as she wears a cheap Batman mask on top of her hijab, framing the glaring absurdity within her life and displaying the convergence of cultural forces affecting her livelihood. AISHA CAN'T FLY AWAY received glowing reviews after its Cannes premiere, with Eoghan Lyng of Dirty Movies calling it a 'Filthy genius movie' and Mohamed Tarek of Chroum lauding it as 'a landmark cinematic moment.' Meanwhile, Olivia Popp praised its cinematography, calling it 'visually slick.' The film follows Aisha, a 26-year-old Sudanese caregiver living in a neighborhood in the heart of Cairo where she witnesses the tension between her fellow African migrants and other groups. Unwittingly, she becomes involved with an Egyptian gang that blackmails her into stealing her patients' keys so that they can rob them. A co-production between Egypt, France, Germany, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Sudan, the film has garnered significant support, including grants from the Doha Film Institute, Cultural Resource Fund, El Gouna Film Festival, Locarno Academy, Cannes' Cinéfondation and La Fabrique des Cinémas du Monde, and Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole. It also notably swept a top award at Red Sea Lodge, five at Venice's Final Cut, as well as the Atlas Award at Marrakech International Film Festival. The creative team behind AISHA CAN'T FLY AWAY features several returning faces from Mostafa's I PROMISE YOU PARADISE, including cinematographer Mostafa El Kashef, who also worked on last year's Cannes entry THE VILLAGE NEXT TO PARADISE, which also made its way to Toronto; production designer Eman Elelaby, who earned a FIPRESCI Prize for her work on FEATHERS; costume designer Nayera Eldahshoury; sound engineer Mostafa Shaban; and editor Mohamed Mamdouh. Produced by Sawsan Yusuf's Bonanza Films, the film is co-produced alongside Dora Bouchoucha and Lina Shaban of Tunisia's Nomadis Images, Sherif Fathy of Shift Studios, Ahmed Amer of A. A. Films, Faisal Baltayour from Cinewaves, Alaa Karkouti and Maher Diab, May Odeh and Zorana Musikic of Mayana Films, Laura Nikolov of Coorigins, Abellelah Al Ahmary of Arabia Pictures, and associate producer Amjad Abu Alala. AISHA CAN'T FLY AWAY boasts a stellar cast, with Buliana Simon taking on the lead role of Aisha alongside Egyptian rapper Ziad Zaza — in his first feature-length appearance — Emad Ghoniem, and Mamdouh Saleh.
