PM Modi holds bilateral with Mexico President Claudia Sheinbaum on G7 sidelines
Kananaskis (Canada)/New Delhi, June 17 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a bilateral meeting with the President of Mexico Claudia Sheinbaum on the sidelines of the G7 in Kananaskis, Canada, today.
The MEA spokesperson in a post on X said it was the first meeting between the two leaders. During the meeting, both sides discussed bilateral cooperation in trade, pharma and global and regional issues.

'PM @narendramodi met President Dr. @Claudiashein of Mexico, on the sidelines of 51st #G7Summit in Kananaskis, Canada. This was the first meeting between the two leaders.
'Both sides discussed avenues to further deepen India-Mexico cooperation in trade, pharmaceuticals, S&T, digital innovation and shared perspectives on key global & regional issues, including priorities of the Global South.'
A readout of the meeting said: During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi congratulated the President of Mexico on her historic victory.
Prime Minister Modi thanked President Sheinbaum for the support extended by Mexico in India's fight against terrorism. Highlighting the historical bonds of friendship between India and Mexico, the two leaders agreed to work towards further expanding ties in the areas of trade, investment, start-ups, innovation, science and technology and automotive sector, and to promote people-to-people exchanges.
'While noting with satisfaction the growing trade and investment cooperation between the two countries, the leaders discussed the opportunities offered by Mexico in the context of near-shoring.
The growing opportunities in the pharmaceutical sector, where India can play an important role in supplying and producing affordable quality medicines and other pharmaceutical products, as also in agricultural and holistic health, figured prominently in the discussions.
President Sheinbaum was appreciative of India's strides in technology, innovation and digital public infrastructure and expressed desire for cooperation with India in these areas. Prime Minister Modi underlined that the two countries should explore collaboration in the fields of semiconductors, AI, Quantum and critical minerals. The leaders also noted upcoming engagements between the think-tank communities of the two sides, and the vibrant cultural and people-to-people ties between the two countries, which will promote tourism flows as well.
'As partner countries, the leaders exchanged views on pressing global and regional issues, and the priorities of the Global South. Prime Minister fondly recalled his visit to Mexico in 2016 and extended an invitation to President Sheinbaum to visit India.'

The G7 Summit 2025 marks PM Modi's sixth consecutive participation in the group of seven meetings as well as the prime minister's first visit to Canada in a decade. PM Modi's visit to Canada comes amid his three nation tour. The first stop was Cyprus, where the BJP leader was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, which is the highest civilian order of the country. After Canada, the prime minister will be headed to Croatia.

India, Canada to revive trade talks as Modi meets Carney at G7; EU free trade pact likely by year-end
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Wednesday agreed to revive the stalled trade talks between the two countries. The two leaders met for the first time since Carney took office following Canada's recent elections. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the G7 Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, marked a step toward repairing a relationship that had seen several months of diplomatic chill. Both sides underscored the need to resume negotiations on the Early Progress Trade Agreement (EPTA) and take it forward with the objective of concluding a broader Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), as per a press note issued by the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Modi and Carney reaffirmed their commitment to shared democratic values and sovereignty, and agreed to restore normal diplomatic presence, including the early return of High Commissioners to each other's capitals, as per the PMO statement. They also highlighted the need to restart senior ministerial and working-level engagements to build trust and momentum, the PMO said in the statement. The leaders discussed expanding cooperation in areas such as clean energy, critical minerals, LNG, artificial intelligence, higher education, food security, mobility and digital transformation. India-Canada relations took a sharp downturn in 2023 after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of involvement in the killing of a Khalistani separatist. India rejected the allegations as politically motivated and expelled Canadian diplomats, prompting reciprocal action from Ottawa. Bilateral ties froze, trade talks were paused, and visa services were briefly suspended. The recent meeting between PM Modi and new Canadian PM Mark Carney signals the first steps toward thawing the strained a separate joint press briefing with the President of Cyprus, Prime Minister Modi drew parallels between India's 'Viksit Bharat 2047' vision and Cyprus's 'Vision 2035,' and called for a five-year roadmap to deepen bilateral ties. The two countries agreed to strengthen defence industry collaboration, initiate dialogues on cyber and maritime security, and set up a real-time information exchange mechanism to combat terrorism and cross-border crimes. Meanwhile, in a joint press briefing with the President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulides, Modi reiterated that the India-EU FTA would be concluded by the end of this year. He had made a similar statement during his Cyprus visit on 16 June prior to the G7 Summit. Cyprus also reaffirmed its support for India's bid for permanent membership in a reformed UN Security Council and agreed to enhance cooperation in defence, cyber and maritime security, as well as set up a mechanism for real-time intelligence sharing to counter terrorism, drug trafficking and arms smuggling. Modi said initiatives like the India-Cyprus-Greece Business and Investment Council and new mobility and air connectivity arrangements would help deepen economic linkages with the Mediterranean region.
