Navigating Uncertainty Requires Collective Courage, Collaboration
By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz
SINGAPORE, June 25 (Bernama) -- Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah emphasised that navigating uncertainty demands not only resilience and reinvention, but importantly requires collaboration and collective courage.
His Royal Highness stated that rebuilding trust, prioritising equity, embracing pluralism, and imagining boldly are four guiding principles for navigating uncertainty, fuelled by the digital transformation of society, the dynamics of human migration, and the uneven economic impacts of globalisation.

He noted that in times of such upheaval, familiar certainties can feel deceptively comforting.
'There is a temptation to retreat into narrower circles of identity, to hoard privileges, and to romanticise a past that, if we are honest and strip away nostalgia, never was.
'But I am confident that the answer to uncertainty is not withdrawal,' said the Perak ruler.
Sultan Nazrin delivered his keynote address, titled 'Navigating Uncertainty', at the 3rd International Conference on Cohesive Societies (ICCS) at the Raffles City Convention Centre here on Wednesday.
His Royal Highness stated that rebuilding trust requires investment in media literacy, digital integrity, and honest communication - not merely control.
'We must reinvest in the social contract. We need transparent institutions, accountable leadership, and civic spaces where people feel seen and heard,' he said.

Exempt mandarin oranges, dates from SST, says PKR MP
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung said small businesses and traders rely on the seasonal demand for fruits like dates to cover operational costs. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung today urged the finance ministry to consider exempting more fruits from the expanded sales and service tax (SST), particularly mandarin oranges and dates. He proposed that special SST exemptions be made for the two fruits during the Chinese New Year and Aidilfitri festive seasons, describing it as a targeted fiscal approach that would be sensitive to the cultural and religious needs of Malaysians. 'These two fruits are inseparable from major Malaysian festive celebrations – Chinese New Year and Ramadan, as well as Hari Raya Aidilfitri. 'Imposing a 5% tax on these fruits not only increases consumers' burden but also contradicts the core principle behind the expanded SST's implementation, which is to only target specific groups,' the PKR MP said in a statement. If the two fruits are not exempted, he said the expanded SST would place even greater pressure on small businesses and traders that rely on the seasonal demand for these fruits to cover operational costs. Lee's call followed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's announcement this morning that imported apples and oranges would be exempted from the expanded SST, which comes into effect on July 1. Although he believed that there was no need to consume imported fruits, Anwar acknowledged that many from among the B40 income group would buy apples and oranges, in part due to their affordability. The finance ministry previously said the expansion of the SST from July 1, including a 5% rate on imported fruits, was aimed at boosting local agricultural demand and strengthening food security. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Ex-Senate deputy president claims trial to accepting Range Rover as bribe
Published on: Thursday, June 26, 2025 Published on: Thu, Jun 26, 2025 By: FMT Reporters Text Size: Ali Mohamad claimed trial last week to 20 charges of accepting RM235,000 in cash and three luxury cars in relation to a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Former Dewan Negara deputy president Ali Mohamad pleaded not guilty in the Ayer Keroh sessions court in Melaka today to a charge of accepting a luxury car as a bribe in 2015. Bernama reported that he entered the plea after the charge was read to him before judge Elesabet Paya Wan. Ali was accused of corruptly accepting a Range Rover Sport from a company director as an inducement to award subcontract work for a land reclamation project in Kota Laksamana. The offence allegedly took place at the company's office in Taman Kota Syahbandar, Melaka Tengah, in June 2015. The charge, under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009, is punishable under Section 24(1) of the same Act by up to 20 years' imprisonment and a fine of not less than five times the value of the bribe or RM10,000, whichever is higher. Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib urged the court to maintain the same bail conditions set by the Shah Alam sessions court on June 18: RM60,000 bail with one surety, surrender of the accused's passport, and a prohibition on contacting prosecution witnesses. He also applied for the case previously filed in Shah Alam to be transferred to Ayer Keroh so that both matters can be heard together. Defence counsel Yunos Shariff raised no objection, and the court fixed Aug 14 for mention. Ali claimed trial in the Shah Alam sessions court last Wednesday to 20 charges of accepting RM235,000 in cash and three luxury cars in relation to the reclamation project. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
