Extend ECRL to Sungai Golok to boost Malaysia-Thailand teade: Thai envoy

KUALA LUMPUR: Thailand's ambassador to Malaysia, Lada Phumas, has suggested that Malaysia's East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project, which starts in Kota Bharu, be extended to the Sungai Golok border to enhance rail connectivity between Thailand and Malaysia.
She said the connection at the border is crucial for improving trade and logistics between the two neighbours.
"We have a rail station in Sungai Golok for which we must now explore ways to revitalise and utilise so that ECRL can be extended and connected to the rail network on Thailand's side. From there, it could be connected to Hatyai - the neighbouring border town of Padang Besar on Malaysia's side, which could facilitate better logistical integration and enhance regional rail connectivity," she told Bernama in an interview today.
The ambassador said that interconnecting rail systems across the region, linking Singapore, Malaysia, Laos, and China, with the potential for further extensions, will strengthen regional ties. She said the Pan-Asia Railway Network (PARN) project is a key infrastructure initiative, connecting China, Singapore and all countries in mainland Southeast Asia.
Malaysia is actively developing its segment of the network, which aims to establish a continuous double-track railway from Johor Bahru to Padang Besar in Perlis.
Phumas said that such interconnection would promote trade, enhance mobility and deliver substantial economic benefits for both countries. "Improved rail connectivity would provide a more affordable and efficient alternative for freight transport, compared to air and road options," she said.
In addition to rail connectivity, Phumas said there are opportunities for collaboration between Malaysia and Thailand in the halal industry and related supply chains.
"Thailand can supply ingredients and raw materials that Malaysia may be lacking, while Malaysia can leverage its expertise in halal certification to strengthen and expand the halal supply chain. This collaboration could prove mutually beneficial for both countries and open up significant opportunities in markets, particularly in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries," she added.
She reiterated that this is why the upcoming summit between Asean, the GCC and China is crucial, as the GCC and China offer a potentially large market for halal products.
"By aligning the production schedules of both nations, especially in food products, the supply chain could be optimised. This collaboration would not only benefit Malaysia and Thailand but also support the broader region by providing high-quality halal products and addressing food security concerns," she added.

The matter was informed by deputy public prosecutor Mohd Ashrof Adrin Kamarul when the case came up for mention before High Court Judge Advertisement 'My Lord, I'm here to to inform the court that the representation has been rejected and the prosecution is going to proceed with the trial. My instructions are to inform the court of the matter and to seek trial dates,' he said. At the same time, the prosecutor asked the court for a longer time as he needed more time to obtain documents as well as to prepare witness statements. B40 not affected by SST expansion

The expansion would primarily impact the wealthy group or those who could afford to spend lavishly and own luxury goods. The low-income group or B40 will not be affected by the expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) scope that will be implemented starting July 1. SHAH ALAM – The low-income group or B40 will not be affected by the expansion of the Sales and Services Tax (SST) scope, which will take effect from July 1. Instead, the expansion would primarily impact the wealthy group or those who could afford to spend lavishly and own luxury goods. UniKL Business School economist Associate Professor Dr Aimi Zulhazmi Abdul Rashid, the expansion represented a more targeted consumption tax and would not be imposed on all income groups. 'This SST is imposed on those who are able to own luxury goods and spend in line with their income. This time, its expansion is more targeted and not general. 'In other words, it is for those with the capacity to make large expenditures,' he told Sinar on Tuesday. Previously, the government adopted a targeted approach in the implementation of the revised Sales Tax (ST) and the expansion of the Services Tax (ST) scope to ensure the public is not burdened when the tax is implemented starting July 1. Finance Minister II Senator Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the tax review aimed to strengthen the country's fiscal position by increasing revenue and broadening the tax base. Bernama FILE PIX Meanwhile, Aimi said the country's domestic economy remained strong despite global economic challenges and therefore, the government's additional revenue target of RM5 billion was not difficult to achieve. 'The SST scope expansion is actually approaching the scope of the previous Goods and Services Tax (GST). 'And based on the continuous strength of the domestic economy, despite global economic headwinds, achieving the additional revenue target of RM5 billion is not an issue,' he said. However, Aimi explained that the SST expansion carries the risk of putting pressure on the current inflation rate, which is now at 1.4 per cent. He said this happens when the additional cost resulting from the tax is passed on by producers to consumers and businesses at the end of the supply chain. 'The expansion of the SST scope poses a risk of increasing the current inflation rate of 1.4 per cent. 'This is because the increase will be passed down by producers through the supply chain of goods and services to consumers and end businesses,' he said. Nevertheless, Aimi emphasised that the inflation rate increase is expected to remain under control as the tax does not involve daily necessities used by the majority of people. 'However, the rate increase will likely remain manageable. It may only rise slightly as it mostly involves high-value luxury goods, not essential items like food and beverages,' he said. Law to hold companies to task needed, says Azalina

PETALING JAYA: There should be more decisive action against those responsible for road accidents that result in loss of life, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said (pic). The Law and Institutional Reform Minister said there is a need to reassess the effectiveness of law enforcement. 'Perhaps it is time to evaluate our laws and consider introducing changes to the Penal Code or enacting a new law, akin to the United Kingdom's approach,' she said in a Facebook post yesterday. She was referring to the UK's Corporate Manslaughter and Corporate Homicide Act, which prosecutes companies for safety management failures leading to death. 'This legislation allows for companies to be held accountable for negligence that results in fatalities,' she said. Azalina said the Act was a response to workplace fatalities where corporate entities previously evaded criminal liability. 'This is especially relevant for companies providing transportation services, as it involves human lives,' she added. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry has a standard operating procedure, including on safety checks, concerning the use of buses by student groups. She said the ministry has directed the Kedah Education Department to look into the welfare of a couple, both teachers, who were involved in the accident with the bus in Gerik, Perak. The couple is receiving treatment at Hospital Baling, Kedah. Deputy Works Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the road where the accident happened is in good condition and was last maintained on Friday. He dispelled talk about the existence of potholes on that stretch had caused the bus tyre to burst thus leading to the tragedy. 'I would like to state that there was no punctured tyre and there were no potholes on that section,' he told reporters in Tuaran, Sabah, Bernama reported. Ahmad said a check at the location showed that there is a road sign warning of a bend ahead in the area. 'However, whatever happens, we will leave it to the special task force to investigate the accident. We do not want to make accusations, especially about technical issues,' he said. Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye, chairman of the Alliance for a Safe Community, called for an overhaul of safety measures for commercial vehicles. 'It's time to elevate our commitment to road safety and ensure that every journey is as safe as it can be,' he said, highlighting the need for strict compliance with the Industry Code of Practice of the Land Public Transport Agency. He cited the mandatory elements that bus and truck operators must adhere to, which include appointing a safety officer, utilising GPS for monitoring speed and driver behaviour, and establishing robust emergency response plans. Lee also noted the importance of enhancing driver management, vehicle upkeep and journey planning to create a safer transportation environment. 'We must prioritise rigorous training, regular vehicle checks and vigilant route management,' he added.
