‘Expired' cables the cause of Giza outages: Source

An official source at the Ministry of Electricity said that the cause of the power outage at the Dahab Island Power Plant is that the connecting cables to the plant are 'expired.'
The Ministry of Electricity announced in a statement that the damaged cable #2 had been repaired to alleviate the crisis until full power is restored.
The official source added that the connecting cables to the plant urgently need to be replaced, along a length of 3.5 kilometers, due to their expiration date.
They are entirely underground and require time and permits from several authorities.
The source indicated that a project to add two new circuits to the plant was awarded to a company more than a year ago. These circuits would have significantly enhanced the plant's capacity, but the company has not implemented them since 2024.
When the power outage crisis occurred, the company was contacted, and confirmed that it had not yet obtained any excavation permits from the railways authority.
Electricity Minister Mahmoud Esmat contacted the Ministry of Transport and obtained these permits on Monday evening.
Citizens suffer under outages
While the Giza Governorate announced in a statement on Monday that repair work on the high-voltage cable in Saqiyat Mekki area had been completed and that electricity was gradually being restored to all affected areas, Al-Masry Al-Youm's tour revealed that Saqiyat Mekki cable was still under repair.
Workers said it had burned down again after it was repaired.
Residents highlighted their suffering due to water and electricity outages amid the intense heat wave, stressing that 'one woman infected her cesarean section wound due to sweat and the lack of water.'
Alaa Mahrous, one of the affected residents, said his wife stumbled on the stairs of the building while descending in the dark and suffered a broken foot.
Bakery owners have resorted to purchasing generators costing up to LE35,000 due to all their bakeries being out of service.
The water and electricity outages have forced residents to leave their homes. Residents of Omraniya area in Giza were forced to move to family and relatives residencies in unaffected areas as the crisis continued.
The Electricity Ministry announced in a statement on Tuesday that crews working to repair Cable 2 have restored power to distribution network, and are currently securing electricity supply to areas within Dahab Island transformer station.
The station is now operating through cables 1 and 2, mitigating the severity of the crisis until the power supply is fully stabilized within the station.
The statement added that the ministry continues to ensure the necessary power supply to all vital and strategic facilities.

Al-Azhar Grand Imam Inspects Aid Convoy to Gaza, Reaffirms Support for Palestinians

Mohamed Mandour The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Professor Dr. Ahmad Al-Tayyeb, Chairman of the ‎Board of Trustees of Zakat and Charities Fund, inspected the preparations of the ‎eleventh relief convoy organized by the Fund to support the people of the Gaza Strip. The ‎convoy is scheduled to depart at dawn on Tuesday, in response to the escalating ‎humanitarian crisis caused by ongoing Israeli aggression, severe famine, and a suffocating ‎blockade.‎ The Grand Imam emphasized that this convoy is part of Al-Azhar's longstanding religious ‎and humanitarian commitment to the Palestinian cause. It reflects the institution's ‎unwavering solidarity with the besieged people of Gaza, who have endured a relentless ‎humanitarian catastrophe for nearly two years due to continued aggression and the ‎deprivation of basic necessities. He affirmed that Al-Azhar will persist in offering all ‎possible support to the Palestinian cause and the people of Gaza and Palestine.‎ The convoy includes over 1,000 fully equipped shelter tents, thousands of tons of food supplies, clean water, medical and essential living supplies, as well as infant formula, diapers, medicines, and other healthcare essentials. This urgent response comes in light of ‎international and local reports warning of famine and unprecedented levels of suffering, ‎particularly in northern Gaza.‎ The Grand Imam had recently called for the swift resumption of relief convoys following ‎the reopening of aid entry points into Gaza. He stressed that the ongoing starvation and ‎destruction inflicted on the Palestinian people necessitate a collective and intensified ‎effort by the Muslim Ummah and the global community to break the blockade, alleviate ‎the suffering of Gaza's residents, especially children and women, and uphold their right to ‎a dignified life.‎ For its part, Zakat and Charities Fund affirmed that this convoy forms part of the relief ‎bridge launched at the beginning of the global campaign "Rescue Gaza", which was ‎initiated by the Grand Imam under the slogan "Strive with your wealth… Support Palestine." ‎The campaign has received contributions from charitable organizations and humanitarian agencies in over 85 countries worldwide.‎ read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Israeli-Linked Hadassah Clinic in Moscow Treats Wounded Iranian IRGC Fighters Arts & Culture "Jurassic World Rebirth" Gets Streaming Date News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Business Egyptian Pound Undervalued by 30%, Says Goldman Sachs Videos & Features Tragedy Overshadows MC Alger Championship Celebration: One Fan Dead, 11 Injured After Stadium Fall Lifestyle Get to Know 2025 Eid Al Adha Prayer Times in Egypt Arts & Culture South Korean Actress Kang Seo-ha Dies at 31 after Cancer Battle Arts & Culture Lebanese Media: Fayrouz Collapses after Death of Ziad Rahbani Sports Get to Know 2025 WWE Evolution Results

In Photos: 9 Egyptian military planes airdrop tons of food in Gaza: Army spox - Foreign Affairs

Nine Egyptian military transport planes airdropped tons of food in areas that are difficult to reach by land in the Gaza Strip, in tandem with land convoys through the Rafah crossing, Egypt's military spokesman affirmed in a statement on Sunday. The spokesman added that the airdrops "were conducted upon President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi's directives to provide all forms of support to the Palestinian people, aiming to alleviate their suffering amid the strip's deteriorating humanitarian conditions due to Israel's war." On Wednesday, four Egyptian military transport aircraft airdropped food over areas in the Gaza Strip that are difficult to access by land. Saturday's airdrop comes as Egypt's sixth and largest humanitarian aid convoy entered Gaza on Saturday morning, including two fuel trucks carrying 107 tons of diesel to help restore operations at the hospitals and bakeries of the besieged Palestinian territory. Earlier on Sunday, Al-Qahera News carried live coverage showing dozens of trucks, organised by the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC), moving from the Egyptian side of the Rafah border crossing into the Karm Abu Salem crossing on their way to enter Gaza. The fuel delivery, the first of its kind in months, is a lifeline for Gaza hospitals stuffed with critically injured patients and children suffering from acute malnutrition due to Israel's engineered famine. The convoy also included substantial quantities of food staples such as flour, white sugar, ghee, lentils, fava beans, cooking oil, and infant formula, according to Egypt's Al-Qahera News. On Thursday, Egypt's fifth aid convoy entered Gaza carrying over 1,200 tons of essential supplies aboard more than 100 trucks. It included approximately 840 tons of flour and 450 tons of assorted food parcels, the Egyptian Red Crescent (ERC) said in a statement. Last Sunday, the ERC launched the humanitarian initiative "Zad El-Ezza: From Egypt to Gaza," marking its first aid convoy after five months of a deadly Israeli blockade. The renewed Egyptian aid flows come amid mounting international condemnation of the US- and Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which was described by international aid organizations as "a war mechanism for killing Palestinians." Since its launch in May, Israeli forces have killed over 1,400 starving Palestinians seeking aid at designated GHF distribution points, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry and UN figures. A D.I.Y. Art Installation Reimagines Urban Repair in Riyadh

A D.I.Y. Art Installation Reimagines Urban Repair in Riyadh A small building in northern Riyadh is slowly being restored by hand. Surrounded by rising towers and constant construction, the site is the centre of an ongoing project led by Saudi artist and curator Meshal Al-Obaidallah and self-taught handyman Joseph Vadakkumchery. Since 2021, the two have been working on 'D.I.Y. (Do It, Yousef)', a collaborative initiative that centers urban repair as both a creative process and civic act. 'In today's changing urban landscape of Riyadh, I view repair and maintenance as acts of preservation and discourse," Al-Obaidallah explained. 'I focus on 'collective amnesia' - that which is deliberately forgotten in Saudi Arabia.' Over time, the personal initiative grew into a layered, community-centered transmedia installation. Livestreams now run alongside hand-posted flyers, found objects and improvised repairs. A dedicated phone line takes public inquiries, while an Instagram account tracks the day-to-day work. In the neighbourhood, passersby often pause to offer tools, share a story, or lend advice - small gestures that turn maintenance into a shared communal goal rather than a solitary task. 'It is rewarding to see what started as a pet project, between me and Meshal, to organically grow into a community project,' said Vadakkumchery. Contributors include architect Abeer Seikaly, designer Majed Alyousef, and cultural entrepreneur Rami Farook. They approach urban repair as a way to preserve traces of the past. Al-Obaidallah's work centres on cultural memory in Saudi Arabia. His previous projects include 'ṣiyāḡah' at KAFD, the online archive ' and the video-based preservation series 'IMG_0220'. Joseph, also known as Yousef, is a long-time Riyadh resident and self-taught contractor whose practice bridges manual labour and quiet observation. Their collaboration was recently recognised with a 2025 Production Award from Culture Resource, a non-profit organisation that supports creatives in the Arab region. A preview of 'D.I.Y. (Do It, Yousef)' was exhibited during Art Week Riyadh at JAX District. The full installation is scheduled to debut in 2026.
