Meat Giant JBS Says Investor Demand for Its Bonds Undercuts ESG Concerns

Mint30-06-2025
(Bloomberg) -- JBS NV's New York listing was met with fierce opposition from activist groups and politicians over the meat producer's ESG record. Many investors, however, seem willing to look the other way.
A $3.5 billion bond sale earlier this week drew demand totaling five times the offering, slashing borrowing costs and providing strong evidence of investors' confidence in JBS, Chief Financial Officer Guilherme Cavalcanti said Wednesday during a conference with journalists in New York.
'The main funds were all there, eager to be allocated,' Cavalcanti said, after being asked how criticism of the company impacted investor perception. The issuance was well oversubscribed less than three hours after launch, he added, without naming any of the buyers.
The deal's success suggests investors are inclined to look past activists' criticism over issues such as the past scandals involving the brothers who control JBS and the company's alleged role in deforestation, placing more emphasis on the company's ability to grow and keep its finances under control.
JBS has taken steps to boost its environmental, social and governance credentials. The company has done 'transformative' work to slash cattle ranching-related deforestation in the Amazon region, Chief Executive Officer Gilberto Tomazoni said during the same conference. And it has now a 'very robust' compliance program in place, Cavalcanti said in a Bloomberg TV interview.
The company said in a statement that investors have repeatedly demonstrated confidence in JBS's actions to mitigate risks in areas such as governance and the environment 'thanks to the robust programs JBS has implemented.'
The bond sale was the first since the meat producer listed its shares on the New York Stock Exchange earlier this month in a move aimed at attracting a broader pool of investors and reducing capital costs.
Bondholders demanded a premium of 1.25 percentage points over Treasuries for its $1.25 billion in 10-year bonds — a record low for JBS offerings with similar maturities, and comparable to the levels required from high-grade US issuers such as Energy Transfer LP and NextEra Energy Inc.
Borrowers rushed to tap debt markets this week amid improved risk sentiment. Mexico, Chile and Latam Airlines Group SA are among those who came out with bond issuances this week.
JBS said earnings before items such as interest and taxes have potential to grow at an annual rate of as much as 7% over the next five years as the company seeks to expand into branded, value-added food products. Sales are projected by analysts at a record $82.5 billion this year.
The stock is headed for a 10% gain this week, the most among main peers.
To be sure, JBS still faces scrutiny from activist groups. Earlier this month, Greenpeace International Program Director Carmen Gravatt said the organization will do its part to make sure that JBS — which relocated its corporate address to the Netherlands — operates within Dutch law. The non-profit also urged investors not to invest in the company.

Evergrande's Debt Hits $45 Billion With Restructuring Ruled Out

(Bloomberg) -- China Evergrande Group's debt load is far bigger than earlier estimated, amounting to HK$350 billion ($45 billion) as any 'holistic' restructuring of the Chinese real estate firm is deemed out of reach, according to the developer's court-appointed liquidators. The company is facing 187 debt claims, with the total amount far exceeding the $27.5 billion of liabilities disclosed in its financial statement in December 2022, the liquidators said in a 'progress report' issued on Tuesday. The new figure isn't to be taken as final since additional claims could emerge and all are subject to formal review. Since liquidators Edward Middleton and Tiffany Wong, both of Alvarez & Marsal Inc., were appointed in January 2024, the duo have been sifting through files and unearthing arcane corporate structures to help creditors recoup money. That has included assuming control of more than 100 companies related to Evergrande that collectively hold a value of HK$27 billion, they said. 'The Liquidators are not at this time able to estimate the amounts that may ultimately be realised from these entities,' they said. It has been a monumental task as Evergrande comprises 3,000 legal entities in multiple jurisdictions, as well as about 1,300 projects under development in more than 280 cities, according to the liquidators. China Evergrande first defaulted in 2021, sending shock-waves through the nation's real estate market that is still seeking to recover. There were also 3,000 projects under the Hong Kong-listed property management operation Evergrande Property Services Group Ltd. Creditors are especially paying close attention to the handling of this arm, since it 'represents a very substantial potential source of value' and are being given 'the highest priority' in terms of attention, the liquidators said. Even though it's not statutory required, the liquidators decided to issue a progress report on Tuesday due to 'wide interest' of the liquidation process, they said. The liquidators said the realization of assets has so far been 'modest' at $255 million. Some $167 million has been 'upstreamed' and linked to Evergrande, however, stakeholders shouldn't assume that all of the money will be available to the company due to complex ownership structures, they said. Separately, China Evergrande New Energy Vehicle Group Ltd., whose unit is also facing a liquidation petition from a creditor, has been looking for strategic investors. The EV maker had goals to take on Tesla Inc. and once had a market value that topped Ford Motor Co. before being swept up in the developer's debt crisis. To date, liquidators have received no expressions of interest, after one previous proposal fell through. The liquidators also have to contend with complexities onshore. It has been challenging for offshore investors to get their hands on assets that sit in the mainland, which has a separate jurisdiction from Hong Kong. Last year, a mainland court accepted a liquidation application filed against one of Evergrande's major units onshore Guangzhou Kailong Real Estate Co. Kailong is fully owned by Evergrande and has a stake of around 60% in Hengda Real Estate, the developer's main property operation onshore. Last March, Chinese regulators accused Hengda Real Estate of inflating more than 560 billion yuan ($78 billion) of revenue by recognizing sales in advance, an alleged fraud that dwarfs that of Luckin Coffee Inc. and Enron Corp. Evergrande was fined 4.18 billion yuan, leaving even less money for offshore creditors. The liquidators said they have been made aware of hundreds of credit actions including the onshore bankruptcy proceedings of Guangzhou Kailong.

Tencent's Revenue Beats Estimates in Boost for AI Ambitions

(Bloomberg) -- Tencent Holdings Ltd.'s revenue beat estimates, bolstering investor expectations that its expanding gaming and social media portfolio will provide dry powder for an intensifying global AI race. Revenue for the three months ended June rose to 184.5 billion yuan ($25.7 billion), versus an average estimate of 179 billion yuan. Net income for the period came to 55.6 billion yuan, compared with projections for 50.8 billion yuan. China's most valuable company is accelerating spending on AI research and product rollouts after a string of rivals launched open-sourced models to compete with the likes of OpenAI and Anthropic. The Shenzhen firm counts on marquee gaming franchises and super-app WeChat to fund such initiatives. Yet a potential global downturn this year — coupled with the Trump administration's tariffs campaign – threatens to hurt Tencent's sprawling online businesses from payments to advertising and cloud computing. The world's biggest games publisher kicks off a closely watched earnings season for Chinese big tech firms, which are riding investor euphoria around the breakout success of DeepSeek. After years of regulatory scrutiny and Covid-era disruption, the country's biggest tech firms are once again ramping up deals and competing fiercely for users to propel growth. Like Big Tech in the US, much of the industry's attention is also focused on how to invest in AI — and monetize it. Tencent alone has gained more than $170 billion this year, though some analysts think it remains undervalued relative to peers such as Meta Platforms Inc. The company's AI efforts include integrating DeepSeek's R1 and own Hunyuan model into a suite of products and games, while renting out computing to clients keen to train or run AI systems. Yet its 30% gain in 2025 that trails Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.'s, whose Qwen family of models consistently ranks among the industry's top performers. What Bloomberg Intelligence Says Tencent's earnings growth is likely to decelerate to about 9% in 2Q, down from 25% during 1Q, following the seasonal peak in its domestic video game business. The internet giant should remain relatively unaffected by US tariffs, though its fintech and ad divisions remain exposed to potential second-order effects, should China's economic growth slow in 2H. Tencent's growth is set to normalize this year after an exceptional 2024, with earnings growth due to decelerate to the mid-teen percentage range. Geopolitical pressure and rising economic headwinds present risks to 2H, though Tencent is better positioned to navigate these than its e-commerce peers. Click here for the research. Tencent is trying to sustain growth at its games division, still the largest source of the company's revenue. It scored some of 2024's biggest hits from DnF Mobile to Delta Force. Beyond earnings, the market is looking forward to next Tuesday's launch of Valorant Mobile, a highly-anticipated smartphone version of Riot Games Inc.'s seminal title. The title should help drive Tencent's revenue from later this year through the first half of 2026, according to Goldman Sachs Inc. Other upcoming titles include an open-world game set in the Honor of Kings universe. The company is set to unveil new ones next week at Gamescom in Germany. It's also more focused on protecting margins than some of its rivals. Tencent has stayed out of an increasingly cutthroat battle in e-commerce, where Alibaba, Meituan and Inc. have sought to outspend each other with subsidies. The trio is slated to report earnings in coming weeks, starting with on Thursday. With a billion-plus users, WeChat remains Tencent's most dependable asset as it shoulders more burdens on monetization in areas from mini-games to advertising. The ubiquitous Chinese app is carrying more advertising within features like search and short-video feeds, chipping away at TikTok-owner ByteDance Ltd.'s key revenue stream. Yet WeChat Pay faces a renewed battle with Alibaba-affiliate Ant Group Co., which has garnered 100 million users for a tap-to-pay feature at stores and restaurants. Tencent hopes WeChat will remain the killer app of the generative AI era. Its unique ecosystem of mini-programs, executives argue, could evolve to become an operating system for agentic AI tools that autonomously perform tasks on behalf of users. The company has rolled out a series of AI tools for game designers to generate in-game avatars and assets. --With assistance from Luz Ding, Henry Ren, Vlad Savov, Ville Heiskanen and Amy Thomson.

Turning waste into wealth: How waste treatment innovation can create jobs and drive green growth

TIL Creatives Representative image India is facing a massive challenge with its growing waste problem. Every day, millions of tons of waste—plastic, organic, industrial, and electronic—pile up in cities and towns. But this mounting problem also presents a unique opportunity. Innovations in waste treatment can not only reduce pollution but also generate jobs and promote sustainable economic growth. Waste as a resource, not a problem Traditionally, waste has been viewed as something to be discarded. However, modern technologies are changing this perspective by turning waste into valuable resources. Through processes like recycling, composting, and waste-to-energy conversion, materials once considered garbage can now be transformed into raw materials, fuel, and fertilizers. For instance, plastic waste can be recycled into new products, organic waste can be composted to enrich soil, and industrial waste can be treated to recover metals and chemicals. Advanced waste-to-energy plants also convert non-recyclable waste into electricity or fuel, reducing dependence on fossil fuels. Health, equity, and investment risks Liquid waste management is often seen only as an environmental concern. But its consequences extend deeper, impacting public health and social equity, especially for marginalised communities near industrial areas. Untreated effluents contaminate water bodies, damaging ecosystems, disrupting agriculture, and posing serious health risks such as gastrointestinal illnesses, skin conditions, and even cancer. Malu Kamble, Managing Director of KEP Engineering, explains, 'For investors, these are clear red flags—indicators of regulatory exposure, reputational vulnerability, and long-term financial risk. In contrast, sustainable waste management practices reflect strong governance, proactive risk mitigation, and alignment with global ESG standards. They are not just responsible—they are essential to building resilient, investable businesses.'Job creation through new industriesThe rise of waste treatment industries has the potential to create millions of jobs across India. From waste collection and sorting to processing and product manufacturing, the sector requires a wide range of skills. This can open opportunities for unskilled workers, technicians, engineers, and enterprises involved in recycling and composting are already thriving in many parts of the country, often providing livelihoods to marginalized communities. The formalisation and scaling up of these operations can improve working conditions and income levels, while also boosting local economies. Driving green growth and sustainability Sustainable waste practices can do more than meet regulations. 'This is about creating shared value—where industrial progress does not come at the cost of human dignity,' Kamble highlights. Waste treatment innovation supports India's commitment to environmental sustainability and green growth. Efficient waste management reduces pollution, lowers greenhouse gas emissions, and conserves natural resources, aligning with India's goals under international agreements like the Paris Climate promoting a circular economy, where waste is minimized and materials are reused, reduces pressure on landfills and natural ecosystems. It also encourages industries to design products with end-of-life reuse in mind, fostering innovation and responsible consumption. Government policies and private sector roles The government has introduced various policies and initiatives to encourage waste treatment and recycling. Programs like Swachh Bharat Mission and Plastic Waste Management Rules aim to improve waste segregation and processing. Incentives for waste-to-energy projects and the promotion of Extended Producer Responsibility are also key companies and startups are increasingly investing in technologies such as bio-methanation, pyrolysis, and advanced recycling methods. Public-private partnerships can accelerate infrastructure development, create jobs, and scale sustainable waste management solutions. Building trust and business resilience Malu Kamble urges industries to take a proactive role in sustainable waste management: 'Building trust with communities is not just good ethics—it's good business. Companies that lead with transparency and invest in sustainable practices will gain investor confidence, access to impact-focused capital, and long-term resilience.'He also reminds us of the need for constant environmental commitment: 'Celebrate World Environment Day, every day, why only a specific day.' Challenges and the way forward Despite progress, challenges remain. Lack of awareness, insufficient infrastructure, and informal waste handling limit the sector's potential. Improving segregation at source, upgrading treatment facilities, and integrating informal workers into the formal economy are critical in research and innovation, promoting skill development, and encouraging community participation will be essential for success. With the right focus, India can turn its waste crisis into a powerful engine for green growth and job viewing waste not as a burden but as an opportunity, India can unlock new economic and environmental benefits. Waste treatment innovation offers a pathway to cleaner cities, more jobs, and a sustainable future. It is time to embrace this change and build a circular economy that works for everyone.
