Baseball-White Sox or Cubs? Popes Chicago baseball allegiance debated
The Windy City is notoriously split between White Sox and Cubs supporters, a rivalry between the south and north sides.
Father Gregory Sakowicz, rector of Chicago's Holy Name Cathedral, said he was in shock when Leo was named pope on Thursday.
"He was not on my short, short list," he said.
"I think he's going to be very strong on the immigrant, human rights and the care for the Earth."
Sakowicz said one burning question was whether the pontiff was a fellow fan of the Chicago White Sox baseball team, as he grew up near the team's stadium on the city's south side, or of their crosstown rivals, the Chicago Cubs.
"I heard he's a Cubs fan," he said.
The Cubs themselves claimed Leo as one of their own, posting on their X account congratulations and a photo of the iconic Wrigley Field sign with the words: "Hey, Chicago. He's a Cubs fan!"
"Not only would we welcome Pope Leo XIV to Wrigley Field, he could sing 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame,'" Cubs Executive Chairman Tom Ricketts said in a statement, referring to the song that fans belt out during the middle of the seventh inning.
Ricketts also invited the pope to deliver a "Sermon on the Mound" at the ballpark.
However, Chicago's local television station WGN9 interviewed the pope's brother John Prevost, on Thursday, who cleared up the matter: Pope Leo is a fan of the White Sox, he said.

Rising star Divya Deshmukh can prove Garry Kasparov wrong, follow Judit Polgar's footsteps; here's how
After winning the 2025 Women's Chess World Cup in style and becoming India's 88th Grandmaster, Divya Deshmukh faces a brand new challenge – that of competing in the 'Open' category of the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss, alongside reigning world champion D Gukesh among others. Indian Grandmaster Divya Deshmukh could follow Judit Polgar's footsteps in proving Garry Kasparov's infamous quote on female players wrong as she competes in the 'Open' category of the 2025 FIDE Grand Swiss. Image: FIDE/Reuters Divya Deshmukh has been the biggest talking point in Indian chess recently, with the 19-year-old charting a sensational journey to victory at the FIDE Women's World Cup in Georgia's Batumi last month. Divya had entered the tournament as an International Master but left with the word 'Grandmaster' next to her name, acquiring the title without having to fulfill the three norms. Along the way, she defeated three players ranked in the world top-10 including veteran GM Koneru Humpy in a historic all-Indian final. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The young star, who qualified for next year's Women's Candidates along with Humpy, faces a brand new challenge – that of competing in the 'Open' category at the upcoming FIDE Grand Swiss tournament. Divya, after all, has received a wildcard entry into the 'Open' category along with Russia's Aleksandra Goryachkina, and is part of a stacked field that also comprises reigning Classical world champion D Gukesh as well as Indian No 1 R Praggnanandhaa and Arjun Erigaisi. What Kasparov had said about female chess players back in 1989 In the process, Divya has the opportunity to follow the legendary Judit Polgar's footsteps in proving Russian chess icon Garry Kasparov's controversial quote on female chess players wrong. 'Well, in the past, I have said that there is real chess and women's chess. Some people don't like to hear this, but chess does not fit women properly. It's a fight, you know? A big fight. It's not for women. Sorry. She's helpless if she has men's opposition,' Kasparov, counted among the greatest chess players of all time, had told the Playboy magazine in 1989. 'I think this is very simple logic. It's the logic of a fighter, a professional fighter. Women are weaker fighters,' he added. Polgar, of course, would force Kasparov to take back his comment with a trailblazing career in which the Hungarian GM became the only woman to break into the FIDE Classical top-10 in the 'Open' category and achieve an ELO rating above 2700. 'Makes complete sense to compete in a stronger event' Though Divya has a long way to go if she is to emulate Polgar's rich legacy, GM Shyam Sundar Mohanraj, a chess coach who has worked with several Indian women players in the past, feels she certainly is on the right track at the moment. 'At this age, especially, she will of course be very ambitious and focus on reaching 2700, which is a dream for any player. She is close to 2500 now, so it makes complete sense to compete in a stronger event. She will be playing more GMs, and she can test her preparation and how determined she is to give a strong comeback,' Shyam Sundar told The Times of India. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Even if she scores less than 50 per cent out of the possible 11 rounds, still it will be a good experience for her, regardless of the rating, whatever happens, minus 10, 30, whatever it is, it will be a much-needed and greater experience. At a young age, Judith Polgar started playing in the Open sections, and that is how she became strong in the way,' he added. The FIDE Grand Swiss takes place in Samarkand, Uzbekistan from 3 to 15 September, with the top two players set to qualify for next year's Candidates Tournament.

Jasprit Bumrah tells Ajit Agarkar his Asia Cup status ahead of big selection meeting: 'He has informed the selectors…'
Ajit Agarkar and the rest of the All India Men's Senior Selection Committee will convene on Tuesday, August 19, to pick the 15-member squad for the upcoming Asia Cup. Ahead of the all-important meeting, pacer Jasprit Bumrah has confirmed his status for the eight-team tournament, beginning September 9. Head coach Gautam Gambhir and captain Suryakumar Yadav have received a major shot in the arm as Bumrah has confirmed his availability for the tournament. Jasprit Bumrah played just three Tests in the Anderson Tendulkar Trophy (REUTERS) According to the Indian Express, Bumrah has already informed the selectors about his willingness to play the tournament. Hence, he is all but set to be named in the squad. 'Bumrah has informed the selectors that he will be available for the Asia Cup selection. The selection committee will meet and discuss it when they meet next week,' the Indian Express quoted a source as saying. Ever since the conclusion of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, Jasprit Bumrah has been in the thick of the action as several former India cricketers have criticised the pacer for not being available for all five Tests. Even before the start of the five-match series against England, it was made clear that Bumrah would just play three games due to workload management. However, the 31-year-old faced scrutiny following India's win at the Oval without him. Mohammed Siraj and his playing all five games were used by some to put Bumrah under the scanner. Drama in Pakistan cricket continues as players reportedly face pay cut after ODI series loss in West Indies
The Pakistan cricket team has been facing a barrage of criticism after suffering their first ODI series defeat against West Indies in over three decades with a 202-run thrashing earlier this week. Senior members of the Pakistan cricket team including Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan had pressurised the PCB to include 3 per cent of their ICC revenue share in player contracts. Reuters The Pakistan cricket team has been facing a barrage of criticism after suffering their first ODI series loss against West Indies in 34 years, with Mohammad Rizwan's men capitulating to a 202-run defeat after getting bundled out for a lowly 92. Not only has the lopsided loss put seniors including 50-over captain Rizwan and Babar Azam in the spotlight, newly-appointed white-ball head coach Mike Hesson has also been targeted with some questioning his credentials. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Babar, Rizwan and others could lose part of their wages As if the criticism isn't enough, there's more trouble in store for Babar and Rizwan and others as they face a pay cut in the aftermath of Pakistan's poor run this year. The Men in Green had, after all, crashed out of the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year without a single win and winning just one out of three Tests this year. According to a report on Cricket Pakistan, the Mohsin Naqvi-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is likely to remove the clause from the players' central contract which includes 3 per cent of the revenue that the board gets from the International Cricket Council. The senior players had pressurised the board to distribute 3 per cent of their earnings from the ICC among the players two years ago. And the manner in which the Pakistanis have struggled to make an impact across formats in recent months, it is likely that the board might remove the clause for good. Pakistan have been performing relatively better in the T20I format under Salman Agha's leadership, having won the 20-over leg of their tour of the Caribbean 2-1. Agha had been named 20-over skipper in March during the tour of New Zealand, with Pakistan winning nine and losing as many in the format since then. The spin-bowling all-rounder will be hoping to lead Pakistan to victory in the upcoming Asia Cup, which returns to the T20 format in the UAE next month, in order to boost his chances of being named captain across formats – replacing Shan Masood and Rizwan in Tests and ODIs respectively.
