Aaron Rodgers on Roman Wilson: Steelers are 'Going to Hold Him to High Standard'
National Football League Aaron Rodgers on Roman Wilson: Steelers are 'Going to Hold Him to High Standard' Published Aug. 20, 2025 12:12 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link Second-year Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson is turning heads this summer, and that includes the one who will be throwing him passes. "I think he's improving every day. You can't skew the results from the details. You look at his game the other night, he made a couple splash plays. But we're going to coach him hard," Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers said about Wilson on Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk. "His receiver coach, [offensive coordinator] Art [Smith], and myself on the details, because the details are what make the difference. And even though he had a couple of big plays, there's some room for improvement there. "Wouldn't say anything if we just thought he was going to be a guy, just any guy that you could throw in. But I think he has a chance to be a big-time talent in the league. So, we're going to hold him to a high standard. I'm really happy with him, the way he's played. But we're going to hold him to a standard of excellence that I think he's capable of reaching." After reeling in each of his two targets for 24 yards in Pittsburgh's Week 1 preseason matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Wilson tallied two receptions once more in its Week 2 preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with them going for a combined 72 yards, those being 42- and 30-yard pickups. Wilson only appeared in one game in his 2024 rookie campaign due to ankle and hamstring injuries. Pittsburgh selected the receiver with the No. 84 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan, whom he helped win the National Championship in his 2023 senior season. ADVERTISEMENT In said championship season (2023), Wilson totaled 48 receptions for 789 yards (16.4 yards per reception) and 12 touchdowns, leading the Wolverines in all four categories. Wilson is part of a Steelers wide receiver room that now includes two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf and veteran Robert Woods; Pittsburgh traded previous No. 1 receiver George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys in May. Wilson is also joined by wide receiver Calvin Austin III, among others. The 41-year-old Rodgers, a four-time NFL MVP, signed a one-year deal with the Steelers in June after spending the previous two seasons with the New York Jets (2023-24). Last season, Rodgers totaled 3,897 passing yards, 28 passing touchdowns, 11 interceptions and a 90.5 passer rating, while completing 63.0% of his passes. Rodgers, Wilson and the Steelers close out their 2025 preseason on the road against the Carolina Panthers on Thursday night and, ironically, open their regular season on the road against the Jets, who now have Justin Fields under center – Fields made six starts for Pittsburgh last season – on Sept. 7. After delaying their NFL dreams, No. 2 Penn State's stars are chasing an elusive national title
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The longer Penn State quarterback Drew Allar weighed his options, the more he thought how sweet it would be to bring a national championship to Happy Valley. After No. 2 Penn State's down-to-the-wire loss to Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff semifinal last season, the allure of unfinished business outweighed professional prospects for the rocket-armed senior who'll lead one of college football's deepest and most experienced teams. 'I know how much better I want to be as a player and leave my mark on Penn State and obviously accomplish the thing that we came close to last year but came up short in,' Allar said. He'll be joined by 15 returning starters who won a program-best 13 games last season. Star running backs Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen, and standout defensive linemen Dani Dennis-Sutton and Zane Durant also opted to delay their NFL careers to chase the program's first NCAA championship since 1986. Now in his 12th season, coach James Franklin understands the expectations of a fanbase weary of playing second-fiddle to Ohio State or Michigan year after year. 'We were a few points and a few drives away from playing for the National Championship and people were pissed,' Franklin said. 'That's what you sign up for when you come to Penn State, and so those expectations are always really high.' That's why Franklin signed Jim Knowles away from Ohio State after the veteran defensive coordinator helped lead the Buckeyes to last season's championship over Oregon, the team that edged Penn State in the Big Ten finale. 'When you look at all of our personnel, not just the players, but the staff and players, it's the best combination that we've had in my 12 years here,' Franklin said. 'The depth, the experience, the talent is impressive.' In the trenches The Nittany Lions are big and deep along the offensive and defensive lines. Sixth-year center Nick Dawkins will be flanked by guards Olaivavega Ioane and Drew Shelton while Anthony Donkoh and Nolan Rucci bookend as tackles. The group combined for 60 starts, helped generate 202 rushing yards per game and mostly kept Allar upright last season. Meanwhile, Dennis-Sutton and Durant combined for 24 of the defense's 119 tackles for loss and 11 1/2 of its 44 sacks. Through the air Second-year offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki wants to get more receivers involved. Penn State's leading wideout caught just 46 passes a year ago while star tight end Tyler Warren accounted for 106 catches. With Warren playing on Sundays now, Kotelnicki is looking for transfers Kyron Hudson (USC), Devonte Ross (Troy) and Trebor Peña (Syracuse) to help veteran Liam Clifford on the outside. Ross caught 129 balls for 1,618 yards and 14 touchdowns in three years for the Trojans. Peña had 84 of his 109 career catches for the Orange last fall and led the team with nine touchdowns. 'It's going to be really important coming out of the first three games that we feel like we really know what we have with those three guys and how we can use them,' Franklin said. Linebacker U With star linebacker Abdul Carter now a New York Giant, all eyes will be on junior Tony Rojas to lead Linebacker U's linebacker corps early. Knowles can't wait to watch him, especially considering Rojas sat out spring practice after having shoulder surgery. Yes, he was banged up for most of his coming out season where he tied for the team lead with three interceptions, was fifth in total tackles and added a sack. 'Very impressed,' Knowles said. 'He seems to have developed physically in the offseason. He's picked things up quickly which is tough to do when you don't get the reps on field.' The schedule The Nittany Lions have home games against Nevada (Aug. 30), Florida International (Sept. 6) and Villanova (Sept. 13) to start. They're idle before hosting Oregon on Sept. 27 in a rematch of last season's Big Ten championship game. Northwestern (Oct. 11), Indiana (Nov. 8) and Nebraska (Nov. 22) all visit Beaver Stadium while trips to UCLA (Oct. 4), Iowa (Oct. 18), Ohio State (Nov. 1), Michigan State (Nov. 15) and Rutgers (Nov. 29) await. ___ Get poll alerts and updates on the AP Top 25 throughout the season. Top 10 College Football Wide Receivers in 2025: Jeremiah Smith, Ryan Williams Lead List
College football has seen some of the most dominant offensive players over the last decade, with several quarterbacks and running backs coming to mind. However, the wide receiver position has been a supremely talented one in more recent years. From players like Travis Hunter at Colorado to Tetairoa McMillan at Arizona just this past season, there have been several future NFL superstars to emerge after dominating at the collegiate level. With so many incredible players at the position this year, FOX Sports Research ranked the top 10 wide receivers ahead of the 2025 season. Let's take a look: Tate has been a steady force in Ohio State's passing attack over his two seasons in Columbus. Just last season, the former five-star recruit totaled 52 receptions for 733 yards, 14.1 yards per reception and four touchdowns en route to helping the Buckeyes win the National Championship. After red-shirting in 2022 and receiving minimal reps in 2023, Boston came on the scene in a big way for the Huskies in 2024. He totaled 63 receptions for 834 yards, 13.2 yards per reception and a team-high nine touchdowns. With Giles Jackson off to the NFL, the 6-foot-4 Boston projects to be Washington's No. 1 receiver next season. Sarratt transferred from James Madison to Indiana for the 2024 season, following his head coach, Curt Cignetti, and several other James Madison teammates to Bloomington. After a standout 2023 season at James Madison, Sarrett picked up where he left off, totaling 53 receptions for 957 yards and eight touchdowns for Indiana in 2024; all three outputs led the Hoosiers, who finished 11-2 and earned a spot in the College Football Playoff. After getting minimal playing time in 2023, Lemon made the most of his prominent role in USC's offense in 2024. In a season that saw the Trojans switch quarterbacks, Lemon still managed to come down with 52 receptions for 764 yards (14.7 yards per reception) and three touchdowns. Lemon, a former five-star recruit, led USC in both receptions and receiving yards and projects to be its top receiver in 2025. Most freshman rarely, if ever, see the field, but Coleman went against the tide in his freshman season at Auburn in 2024. The former five-star recruit tallied 37 receptions for 598 yards at 16.2 yards per reception with eight touchdowns, serving as a bright spot in a dark 5-7 season for the Tigers. In the penultimate week of the regular season, Auburn upset then-No. 15 Texas A&M, with the 6-foot-3 Coleman reeling in seven receptions for 128 yards and two touchdowns in the overtime win. Joining Coleman in Auburn's wide receiver room next season is Singleton, who spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at Georgia Tech in 2023 and 2024. Across those two seasons, Singleton averaged 52 receptions for 734 yards and 4.5 touchdowns per season. Singleton has also provided a boost in the running game, as he got the call on the run 21 times for 131 yards and one touchdown in 2024. After a pair of effective 2022 and 2023 seasons, Williams emerged as an integral part of Clemson's offense in his junior season, reeling in 75 receptions for 904 yards and an ACC-high 11 touchdowns, with all three totals leading the Tigers in 2024. Williams also had seven carries for 101 yards and one touchdown. Williams broke the ice in Clemson's first-round playoff matchup against Texas, taking a Cade Klubnik pass 22 yards into the end zone for the game's first score. (Despite all that, the Longhorns went on to win the game.) Tyson's collegiate career has been a bumpy one, as a respectable 2022 campaign at Colorado was cut short by a knee injury. That injury then limited Tyson in his first season at Arizona State, with him not recording a reception in 2023. Then, he got back on the field and took over. In 2024, Tyson totaled 75 receptions for 1,101 yards (14.7 yards per reception) with 10 touchdowns, all three totals leading the Sun Devils in a season that saw them win the Big 12 and earn a first-round bye in the College Football Playoff. Unfortunately, Tyson, who had five 100-yard performances, suffered a broken collarbone in the final week of the regular season, ending his junior campaign. Williams flashed speed in his 2024 freshman season at Alabama. One might say it looked like Dash from "The Incredibles" was lining up on the outside for the Crimson Tide. Williams racked up 48 receptions at 18 yards per for 865 yards and eight touchdowns, with the last two totals leading Alabama; he also logged two rushing scores. In fact, the first two catches of Williams' career were touchdowns, as he had two receptions for 139 yards and two scores in Week 1. One month later, he had six receptions for 177 yards and one score, a go-ahead, 75-yard touchdown with 2:18 remaining in the game, in Alabama's dramatic win over Georgia. There are great freshman seasons, and then there's what Smith did at Ohio State last year. In a campaign capped off by the Buckeyes winning the National Championship, Smith totaled 76 receptions for 1,315 yards – 17.3 yards per reception – and 15 touchdowns. Smith's yard and touchdown totals each led the Big Ten. Arguably, Smith's best performance came in Ohio State's quarterfinal round victory over Oregon in the College Football Playoff, as the star receiver totaled seven receptions for 187 yards and two scores. The No. 1 recruit in the Class of 2024 reeled in the most pivotal pass of the season for Ohio State, coming down with a 56-yard pass on third-and-11 at the two-minute warning of the National Championship, helping the Buckeyes get in position to later kick a field goal and go up two scores, which would be enough for them to finish off the victory. 2025 Heisman Trophy odds: Arch Manning, Texas: +650 (bet $10 to win $75 total)Garrett Nussmeier, LSU: +850 (bet $10 to win $95 total)Cade Klubnik, Clemson: +950 (bet $10 to win $105 total)Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State: +1100 (bet $10 to win $120 total)LaNorris Sellers, South Carolina: +1600 (bet $10 to win $170 total)Julian Sayin, Ohio State: +1600 (bet $10 to win $170 total)Drew Allar, Penn State: +1600 (bet $10 to win $170 total)DJ Lagway, Florida: +1800 (bet $10 to win $190 total)Dante Moore, Oregon: +2200 (bet $10 to win $230 total)John Mateer (Oklahoma): +2500 (bet $10 to win $260 total)Sam Leavitt (Arizona State): +2800 (bet $10 to win $290 total)Carson Beck, Miami:+3000 (bet $10 to win $310 total) Want great stories delivered right to your inbox?
