Russia launches first direct flights to N. Korea amid deepening wartime alliance

MOSCOW, July 28 — Russia on Sunday began direct commercial flights to North Korea, in a further sign of closer ties with its Asian ally helping its offensive in Ukraine. The first Moscow-Pyongyang flight, operated by Russia's Nordwind Airlines, took off at 1625 GMT, according to the Sheremetyevo airport's website. It is scheduled to land in the North Korean capital some eight hours later. But initially, the route will only be serviced once a month, Russia's transport ministry said. Nordwind Airlines — which used to carry Russians to holiday destinations in Europe before the EU imposed a ban on Russian flights — had tickets priced at 45,000 rubles (RM2,410). 'This is a historical event, strengthening the ties between our nations,' Oleg, a Nordwind employee managing the flight who did not want to give his full name, told AFP at the airport. He also declined to say how many passengers were on board. 'For the first time in more than 70 years of diplomatic relations, we are launching direct flights between the capitals of our countries,' Russia's deputy transport minister Vladimir Poteshkin was quoted as saying by the ministry's Telegram account. Russia's state news agency TASS reported that the first return flight from Pyongyang to Moscow would take place on Tuesday. Russia and North Korea restored train links on June 17 after suspending them in 2020 during the Covid pandemic. The two countries have been forging closer military bonds in recent years, with Pyongyang supplying troops and weapons for Russia's military operations in Ukraine. They signed a mutual defence pact last year, when Russian President Vladimir Putin visited North Korea. North Korea confirmed for the first time in April that it had deployed a contingent of its soldiers to the frontline in Ukraine, alongside Russian troops. — AFP

Haze risk rising: Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia face medium threat in 2025, says report

SINGAPORE, July 28 — Singapore, Indonesia, and Malaysia face a moderate risk of a severe transboundary haze occurrence for the remainder of the year, according to an assessment released Monday by the Singapore Institute of International Affairs, reported Xinhua. The latest report marks an increase from the institute's 2024 assessment, which rated the risk as 'low' on its three-tier scale of low, medium, and high. Hike in agricultural prices and the increased rate of deforestation have heightened the risk of fires and haze, the report stated, which in turn points towards a surge in hotspots and smoke haze across parts of Sumatra in mid-July this year. As a consequence, the transboundary haze is anticipated to drift from central Sumatra into parts of Peninsular Malaysia. Economic and policy shifts could also inadvertently drive deforestation and increase haze risk if fire continues to be used for land clearing, the report warned. Looking further ahead, climate trends suggest the possibility of another unusually dry season between 2027 and 2030, which could further exacerbate haze risks. — Bernama-Xinhua

Johor to revoke licences of car wash operators who reject locals for Singaporeans

KUALA LUMPUR, July 24 — Local authorities in Johor Bahru will be instructed to revoke the business licences of car wash operators who refuse to serve Malaysians and cater only to foreign customers, especially from Singapore. Johor housing and local government committee chairman Datuk Mohd Jafni Md Shukor said he viewed such behaviour seriously, following viral social media posts alleging that a car wash outlet in Johor Baru prioritised Singaporean vehicles. He said the state government would direct local councils to investigate such businesses and take firm action if the discriminatory practice continues, The Star reported. 'If someone is doing business in Johor but only prioritises foreigners while sidelining locals just for the sake of bigger profits, then we will not tolerate it,' he was quoted saying. Jafni added that he would instruct local councils to cancel the licences of any car wash operators who insist on only serving foreign-registered vehicles. He made these remarks during the closing ceremony of the Johor Property Expo (JPEX) 2025 at Angsana Johor Bahru Mall on Thursday. Jafni said the state government would not hesitate to act against business operators who ignore the needs of the local community in pursuit of profit. He reminded all business owners in Johor that while seeking profit is expected, they must also uphold corporate social responsibility by not neglecting locals.
