East Coast Samaritans highlight 24/7 service after caller inspires new campaign
Funds raised will support branches across Ireland, including East Coast Samaritans, which prevents suicide through the power of human connection, and had stands at the Bridgewater Shopping Centre in Arklow and Gorey Library on July 24 to raise awareness of the service.
'I was always seen as the bubbly, outgoing one - always trying to put a smile on people's faces,' Athlone man Nathan said.
'But that didn't mean everything was always fine behind the scenes. Like many others, I went through times when I struggled. And during those moments, Samaritans were there.
'They were the voice at the end of the phone when I felt like I had no one else. Sometimes I called in tears, other times just needing someone to listen. I never felt judged - only supported.
'Those calls helped me through the darkest moments, and looking back now, I truly believe they played a part in shaping the person I've become.'
Noting how Samaritans Awareness Day is such an important date for the charity, East Coast Samaritans branch director Brigid Flynn said that they want to get the message out that Samaritans are there 24 hours a day for anyone in crisis and struggling to cope on freephone 116 123.
'It remains a challenging time for many people, and we want to remind the public that they are not alone – our volunteers are here at any time of day or night, whatever they are facing,' Brigid said.
Deputy director of outreach, Linda McCormick, added: 'We were delighted with the support shown to us in July, in the run-up to 24/7.
'Every time someone stops to talk to us at a stand, our message is spread - you are never alone when you can call Samaritans.'
Local craftaholic, CJ Cassin from Arklow, took part in a 24hr crafting challenge raising additional funds and awareness, with East Coast Samaritans also kindly donated a tree by Dublin Samaritans to mark 24/7 2025 – a gesture of solidarity between branches, or 'A Tree of Hope'.

‘You don't have to be in crisis to call', says Dublin Samaritans volunteer
'I won't lie, it was daunting,' she said. 'But once I got into it, I felt prepared. The training is just phenomenal. You're never left to do it alone.' Sharon, who works as an HR Generalist with DHL Express, only became a volunteer at the end of last year. But already, it's changed the shape of her life. 'I'd always seen myself as a caring person, but after I took part in a 'Learn to Listen' workshop through work, something clicked. 'I just thought, this is what I want to do. Within a week, I'd signed up to volunteer.' Now, she gives three hours a week to the service, plus a night shift every couple of months. 'It just fits in. I schedule it in like anything else. Honestly, every time I finish a shift, I walk out with a sense of warmth. Like yeah, I did something that mattered today.' Today marks the charity's annual 24/7 Awareness Day, and Sharon helped coordinate something bigger: the delivery of 24 native Irish trees to all Samaritans branches across Ireland, north and south. The Tree of Hope project, a collaboration between Samaritans, Coillte and DHL Express, sees native Irish trees delivered to each of the 24 Samaritans branches as a gesture of unity and resilience. 'Nobody plants a tree without hope,' said Mary McMahon, Volunteer Director of Dublin Samaritans. 'It's a powerful reminder that no matter what's happening, life can grow from even the hardest ground.' This is the first time all 24 branches have come together in a single nationwide initiative. The trees were delivered in time for July 24, a date chosen to reflect the service's commitment to being available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. 'We're literally delivering hope,' Sharon said. 'That's what these trees represent. 'It's all connected – our 24-hour delivery network, Samaritans' 24-hour helpline, and our shared value of being there for people, no matter what.' Last year, 470,000 calls were answered by Samaritans volunteers across Ireland, up from 400,000 the year before. That's an average of 1,500 calls every single day. More than 6,800 calls in 2024 were diverted to 116 123 when other organisations were shut, underlining the 24/7 support the service provides. 'Strong emotions don't clock off at 5pm,' Ms McMahon said. 'We get calls at every hour, from people in distress, people who are worried about someone else, or just people who need to feel heard. We're here. Always.' To mark 24/7 Awareness Day in the capital, Dublin Samaritans presented a native Irish tree to the Deputy Lord Mayor, councillor John Stephens, at the Mansion House. The tree was then planted in St Stephen's Green, where it will remain as a public reminder of connection and support. ‘He eats, sleeps and breathes Samaritans' – Arklow charity director steps down
After joining the branch in 2017 and committing his time, energy and can-do attitude to the cause, Damien's fellow volunteers recognised his diligence and dedication by electing him as their branch director in 2022. Taking on the busy position and learning as he went, Damien took the leadership role in his stride, working long hours on fundraising efforts, awareness campaigns and developing meaningful connections with communities on both sides of the Wicklow-Wexford border. Although no longer the branch director, Damien is still working away in the background with the branch and will return in an increased capacity after a brief break. In the meantime, he will be kept busy by his new role as chairperson of the MS Ireland East Wicklow Branch – a cause very close to his heart. Still on cloud nine after the 'amazing' reception he received at his celebratory bash, Damien said that it was a pleasure and an honour to work closely with so many like-minded and dedicated volunteers, adding that he is delighted that the charity is in the safe hands of new branch director Brigid Flynn. 'It was nice to see so many people there at the party, and I didn't expect to see such a turnout, with lots of volunteers and people who support Samaritans in attendance, and I'm so grateful to everyone at the branch,' he said. 'I enjoyed the role, and there were a lot of really positive things that happened over the last year, with lots of kindness and generosity from the community. 'It was just amazing to see what can come from an idea for an event, with people becoming more aware of it and our services, and the branch going from strength to strength because of it. Spreading the word about the charity and encouraging people to volunteer has been very rewarding. 'It is a busy role, but everyone's busy here, not just the branch director. All our volunteers give their role 100pc, and that's amazing to see. 'There's a kind of rule that you have to take a break and stay away for a little while after you step down, but I'll still be helping out here and there in the background, with the IT side and outreach activities, and I hope to return in an increased capacity in recruitment. 'I was offered the role of chairperson of the MS Ireland East Wicklow Branch, which I was already part of, so it works out in a way that I have more free time to commit to that,' he continued. ADVERTISEMENT 'I'm not going anywhere, and will return to the Samaritans branch, which I'm delighted will now have Brigid as the branch director. 'She's very committed and has been involved in every area of the charity. She has given her all since day one, and I know she'll excel in the new role. 'I can see a bright future with Brigid at the helm, and I'll be very glad to be part of her team.' Returning the compliment, Brigid expects Damien will do great things in his new role at the MS Ireland East Wicklow Branch, adding that she is delighted she and East Coast Samaritans will still be able to call on his broad skill-set and vast knowledge. 'Damien is one in a million – he eats, sleeps and breathes Samaritans and he's fully dedicated himself to us,' Brigid said. 'He led us brilliantly for three years, and is such an approachable guy who is so willing to help in every aspect of the branch. He puts everything into it, is very dedicated. He's a great communicator and speaker. No job fazes him, and if it does, he asks for help and digs in. 'I've worked with Damien for the past three years in outreach, fundraising and volunteer care. I am just so grateful that he's not leaving our branch, he's just changing roles, and he's staying with us on the board of trustees. 'I'm so delighted that Damien is staying with us. It's just wonderful for the branch that his expertise will still be here.'
