State softball preview: Ferguson, Tumwater T-Birds earn 2A's No. 1 seed

Yahoo22-05-2025

Ella Ferguson hears the lofty claim from former coaches, parents, and fans alike — this year's Tumwater softball team is the strongest and most-complete roster in school history.
It's high praise for a program with three state titles in the trophy case. The T-Birds hoisted 2A's first-place trophy in 2022 and finished runner-up last spring, a perennial contender with their ace pitcher healthy for one last ride.
'I've never cherished a team the way that I do with them,' Ferguson told The News Tribune, a senior and Sacramento State signee. 'This is our last run. We have nothing left to give.'
The 2A Evergreen and District 4 champions are the state tournament's No. 1 seed this weekend at Carlon Park in Selah, a chance for Tumwater to claim its fourth title on Ferguson's farewell tour. First-year head coach Shaunie Kennedy and the T-Birds experienced brief, early bumps in the road, but Ferguson is peaking in the postseason as a dual-threat — one of six Tumwater hitters with an OPS over 1.000.
'I told them when I came in, I'm not coming in like a wrecking ball,' Kennedy said. 'I'm going to put pieces of the puzzle together where I feel that we're going to succeed the most, and then help you take all your tools in your toolbelt and sharpen (them).'
When Tumwater finished indoor hitting drills at Wednesday's final practice, Kennedy took her team onto their home field one last time. Four years of Ferguson's memories rushed back: the walk-offs, the highlight-reel plays, and the tears. It stung, she admitted. But it lit a fire underneath the state's top seed, too.
In 16 appearances this spring, the overpowering right-hander is 10-2 with a 1.36 ERA, recording 136 strikeouts to 39 walks with a rise-ball opponents have yet to crack. Ferguson no-hit rival Black Hills in a six-inning gem (0 BB, 10 K) on April 9 and saved perhaps her best performance for last weekend's District 4 championship, blanking Mark Morris via complete-game one-hitter (14 K).
Ferguson missed the season's first two weeks with a back injury, but sophomore southpaw Sarah Stevens shouldered the load as an overqualified second option (9-0, 2.86 ERA) in the early going, including a 10-strikeout win over Seattle Christian on March 17.
'We're going into (state) with our heads held high,' Ferguson said. 'We're super, super confident. And I'm confident in the girls one-through-nine on our team. I feel like some pitchers have a really good catcher or really good pitcher, but one-through-nine are rock solid.
'We've been working so hard, and I think we're ready.'
Just how potent is this year's Tumwater team? Ferguson leads qualified T-Birds hitters in batting average (.488), on-base percentage (.522) and slugging (.930). Senior catcher Jaime Haase is the primary run creator with 16 extra-base hits and 41 RBI, and Stevens launched a Tumwater-best seven home runs this spring.
Sophie Skillman (.442 AVG), Brielle Womach (.412), and Megan Barrett (.375) stacked the 2A Evergreen's best lineup, an offense that averaged more than nine runs per game in the regular season. Ferguson sympathizes with Kennedy, responsible for ordering a lineup lacking a true weakness.
'Honestly, I know how hard it is for Coach to make lineup sometimes,' Ferguson said, 'because the statistics and everything are just so close.'
And when Tumwater (19-3) drops the occasional game, few teams are better at bouncing back. The T-Birds have enjoyed separate six-game win streaks following every loss this season, including an active seven-game stretch that rolls into the state bracket. They're four wins away from another title.
'(We) don't 'lose.' Even though we lost a game, I'm going to make sure my team learned from that game,' Kennedy said. 'We've come back in, we've regrouped, we've worked on the things that we weren't accomplishing and adjusting to, and we've made adjustments and come back out hungry.
'I'll just tell them: 'When you step in that box, that's your home, and you're going to protect that when you're up there.' We're going to come in confident, we're going to attack our pitches, and we're going to make adjustments. ... We're going to swing for whatever kind of pitch we're getting.'
Tumwater's quest for the 2A title begins Friday morning in Selah, paired with No. 16 Nathan Hale for an 11 a.m. first pitch in the Round of 16. With a win, No. 8 Franklin Pierce or No. 9 Lynden in the state quarterfinals looms next.
'We have something to prove,' Ferguson said. 'We have something to finish.'

Blue Jays quick hits: Lauer deserves the bulk of the praise in come-from-behind win over Twins

It was one thing to sweep the lowly Athletics. It's something else entirely to win a series against the Philadelphia Phillies and then take the opener against the Minnesota Twins, rivals for a wild-card spot. The Blue Jays ' upward swing continued Friday night as Addison Barger and George Springer homered in a 6-4 victory at Target Field. The Twins made it interesting late by bringing the potential go-ahead run to the plate in the eighth inning, but left-hander Brendon Little escaped a jam before closer Jeff Hoffman entered in the ninth to record his 14th save. The Jays have now won nine of their last 11 games and remain tied with the Tampa Bay Rays for the final American League wild-card spot. Here's everything you need to know about how the Jays started a three-city, nine-game road trip on a winning note: The Jays might have made a mistake in the spring by allowing veteran lefty Ryan Yarbrough to walk away for nothing in return, but Eric Lauer has been just as effective. Lauer returned on two days' rest to toss 2 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. After sparking Thursday's blowout win over the Phillies, the resurgent Bichette is among the Lauer's performance helped right the ship after Paxton Schultz allowed three runs in two innings as the opener. Lauer has a 2.08 ERA across 26 innings. With results like that, the Jays should stop changing his role and commit to using the 30-year-old as a full-time starter. Barger has been on a heater for the better part of the month and he is showing no signs of cooling off any time soon. After hitting four home runs in four games earlier this week, Barger was back at it in Minnesota. After a disappointing start to his third big-league season, Schneider was sent to the minors to With the Jays trailing 3-0 in the fourth, Barger unloaded on an 88-m.p.h. fastball from Bailey Ober and sent it over the wall in right for a two-run homer. The no-doubter left his bat at 105.5 m.p.h. and travelled an estimated 384 feet for Barger's seventh homer of the season. This was his third game as the No. 3 hitter behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and, considering the recent results, it's a spot he deserves to hang onto for the foreseeable future. After a poor start to the season, the Jays' offence turned things around in May and the bottom of the order was one of the reasons why. Ernie Clement, Nathan Lukes, Jonatan Clase, Tyler Heineman and Myles Straw have all had their moments in the sun, and that was the case against the Twins, too. Clement sparked a rally in the fifth with a single to left before No. 9 hitter Andrés Giménez hit a fly ball that was misplayed by right fielder Matt Wallner to put runners on second and third. Leadoff man Bo Bichette followed with a bloop two-run single to centre as the Jays took a 4-3 lead. Springer made it 5-3 in the fifth with a solo homer before Alejandro Kirk added an RBI single in the eighth.

Pedro Pagés hits a 2-run HR, Sonny Gray pitches into 7th inning as Cardinals beat Dodgers 5-0

ST. LOUIS -- Pedro Pagés hit a two-run homer, Sonny Gray pitched into the seventh inning and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-0 Friday night in a game that started after a 1 hour, 17 minute rain delay. Willson Contreras hit his sixth homer of the season in the eighth inning off Chris Stratton, who was re-signed by Los Angeles before the game, and Nolan Arenado had three hits to help St. Louis improve to a National League-best 21-9 since May 4. Gray (7-1) allowed eight hits and struck out five without walking a batter in 6 1/3 innings to earn his second win against the Dodgers in eight career starts against them. JoJo Romero, Phil Maton and Steven Matz combined to pitch 2 2/3 innings in relief to secure the Cardinals' eighth shutout of the season. Pagés lined the first pitch he saw from Justin Wrobleski (1-2) over the left-center field bullpen in the second inning for his fifth home run of the season to put St. Louis ahead 2-0. Brendan Donovan blooped a two-out, two-run single to center field in the fifth inning to push the Cardinals' lead to 4-0. Wrobleski allowed four runs on six hits and three walks in a career-best six innings after being recalled from triple-A Oklahoma City prior to the game. Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts each singled to lead off the third inning. However, Gray struck out Freddie Freeman and Teoscar Hernández, and Max Muncy flew out to right field to end the Dodgers' threat. Gray has tossed 14 consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the sixth inning of his start on May 25 against Arizona. Gray has not allowed a run in four of his last six starts. Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-4, 2.39 ERA) is scheduled to face Cardinals RHP Erick Fedde (3-5, 3.82) on Saturday. ___

Barger hits 2-run HR, Bichette has go-ahead 2-run single as Blue Jays beat Twins 6-4

MINNEAPOLIS -- Addison Barger hit a two-run home run, Bo Bichette had a go-ahead two-run single in the fifth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Minnesota Twins 6-4 on Friday night for their fifth straight victory. Trevor Larnach homered two batters into the first off rookie Paxton Schultz to give the Twins the lead and tie him for the team lead with 10. Kody Clemens had a run-scoring ground out and Christian Vázquez hit a two-out RBI double to make it 3-0 in the second. Bailey Ober hit Vladimir Guerrero Jr. with a pitch to begin the fourth and then gave up his first hit when Barger homered to right field to get Toronto to 3-2. Five of Barger's seven homers have come in his last seven games. Ernie Clement singled leading off the fifth and Andrés Giménez doubled before Bichette blooped a single to center for a 4-3 lead. George Springer hit his ninth home run — a solo shot off Mason Fluharty to make it 5-3 in the sixth. Guerrero doubled leading off the eighth and scored on Alejandro Kirk's single for a 6-3 lead. Ober (4-2) retired the first eight Blue Jays before walking Andrés Giménez on a full count. He allowed five runs and five hits in seven innings. Eric Lauer (2-1) replaced Schultz to begin the third and allowed a hit in 2 1/3 scoreless innings to get the win. Fluharty and Yariel Rodríguez both got four outs, and Jeff Hoffman pitched the ninth for his 14th save in 17 opportunities. Royce Lewis went 3 for 3 for Minnesota, which was coming off a 5-5 road trip. Lewis had a two-out RBI single in the home eighth off Brendan Little to get the Twins within two runs, but Little left the tying runs stranded when Clemens grounded out. Toronto is 236-193 all time against Minnesota, but the Twins have won the season series in six of the last seven years. Blue Jays RHP Kevin Gausman (5-4, 3.82 ERA) starts Saturday against Twins RHP Chris Paddack (2-5, 3.58).
